How I Made Enough Money with Steem to Buy A New Nissan Leaf

in #marketing7 years ago (edited)

And Put The Steem Logo on it.

Please check out the video:

Thanks to @beanz for editing! Music by @votu

A couple of months ago when the Steem price was rising, there were plenty of upbeat posts about what people had bought with their Steem earnings. For example some had been able to purchase laptops, farm animals/equipment, headphones and others had simply been lifted out of poverty. What was really cool about those was that they never put any money into Steem, it was pure earnings from posting as authors.

However, if you did invest in Steem, especially at the right time, you may have made far more than even the top trending authors. I started investing in Steem in July of last year, quite soon after I first joined and started making posting rewards. I spent a fair bit of time thinking about Steem as a platform and as an investment, to understand what I was buying into. I invested a little at first after the price had already fallen from its first peak (over $4.30), only for it to fall more during August (below $1). As the price dropped, I bought more. I was continuously in the red, with more apparent losses month after month. Despite losses, I kept doubling down, in fact some of the most money I spent was at a price $0.07, after months of stagnation and widespread belief that the platform was doomed. While acknowledging problems, I continued to believe in the core concept and a contrarian investment philosophy helped me make that decision.

We all know how that turned out, from a low of less than 6 cents, Steem tripled in value in March shortly after @dan announced his resignation. At the same time there was an experiment in the distribution of influence, as well as rapid growth in certain developing world regions. Whatever the reason, the price of Steem was eventually propelled back to $2.80, and I had far more of them now. You can view my Steemwhales page for a mostly accurate but incomplete picture. Prior to hard fork 16 I would invest entirely in Steem Power due to the inflationary model of Steem, but afterwards I started investing in liquid Steem as well as a shorter term bet, and I sold that from $1 all the way up to $2.80. I have still kept the vast majority of my Steem powered up.

So that's how I was able to spend €30,000 on a brand new Nissan Leaf. I'm also happy to show the world how I got it. The Steem logo is on the sides and front, we've already had a number of people ask us about it. The decals cost €200 to put on. It's expected that it will take about 4-5 years before there is noticeable wear and tear, which is a lot of time to make impressions while it's driven in Dublin by myself and my sister @beanz. From that perspective it is a low cost way of having the Steem logo seen by a lot of people. It’s also a strong impression, putting a logo on your car is a big deal, it means it’s something you probably really care about.

Reveal spoiler

@beanz is pretty happy with it (^_^)

A Steem-mobile

If you're interested in the car itself, it's pretty cool. It's 100% electric, and while it's no Tesla, it's surprisingly impressive for what it is. I got the 30kWhr battery version, with an EPA range of 107 miles. That's a realistic estimate, but I live in a small country with plenty of fast charging facilities. So within Ireland there is no practical limit on the range, although if I want to go to Cork or Donegal I will need to take a short coffee break while it charges up again. Incidentally those charging points are free, we’ve paid nothing for electricity so far since we have only used public charging points. We’ve just now had a charging point installed in our home, and with a night meter the fuel costs of the car will be less than 1/5th of an equivalent petrol car. Maintenance costs are also greatly reduced vs. petrol cars, with much fewer moving parts that can fail or deteriorate. It's quite fast too, as an electric car you get instant torque when you press the pedal. You can definitely feel that when you’re in the car. I’ve heard different measurements of how fast it goes 0-60 (some say 5 seconds, others say 10, it seems to be somewhere in the middle of those), but it is much faster than conventional cars at going from 0-30, which is something that matters more when you mostly drive in the city and your local area.

The electric vehicle grant brought the price of the car down €5000, it would have been €35,000 otherwise. You could get a 1 or 2 series BMW for that price, but the fuel and maintenance costs would be vastly more. Savings on fuel and maintenance should amount to over €2000 each year, meaning that after 5 years the savings bring it equal in cost to an equivalent petrol car costing €10,000 less. Assuming normal use, the batteries deteriorate to 80% capacity after about 10 years, although if I misuse my batteries they would deteriorate faster, and taking good care of them can make them last much longer. When the batteries reach that point they will likely be refurbished or entirely replaced. If I'm somehow unlucky enough to experience batteries deteriorating quickly, they are covered by warranty and Nissan will replace them.

Waiting patiently for your next marketing post...

I am thinking Tesla Model S. By then it may have to be black and have EOS logo on it...

Kinda like this one?

this still is nice tho @hotsauceislethal, but a lambo would be more of an impression

you should check out Lucid Motors! They are going to build their whole factory near my hometown!

Yeah, I've seen them, pretty cool. Hopefully their new car will be out (with reviews, etc) by the time I'm looking again.

I want to do this for a Tesla Model 3!! Go GREEN STEEM!

That my dream car

YES! love your way of thinking.

As a Nigerian if i have a car like this i will contest for local govt chairman in my state. I love ur taste for good cars

Maybe next year?

that's what I am shooting for - right now I just got enough to buy a poster of it!

My car 😜

como es el procedimiento para colocar el logo en mi vehiculo y cual seria la rentabilidad?

Next level:)

That's for the next pits top.

IM WITH YOU ON THIS ONE STEEMIAN

Ahah all these replies here are hilarious.. :))

I m so happy for u. Hope steem price can rise up again n u can buy another car for your love ones. Looking forward to that post in near future. Cheers!

That is the best post ever on Steemit! So much work and effort went into it!!! It looks brilliant, i love it!!! Lets get this trending ;)

@demotruk, my dream car is Jeep Wrangler but the steem sign gonna be little smaller. @allasyummyfood, I may do the same post as demotruk too, with video pictures in every city. Love it ...

Hope to have it also, from my income here at steemit. I'll be the first in the Philippines...wish me luck. Thanks!

It is a so nice post which give us so much courage for all of us.

I joined Steemit 1 month ago because yeah even I heard about it before, I never paid enough attention to it (my fault).

Now I'm realizing all the potential of that plateform and I'm investing lot of my saving in it. I know it is perhaps not the best moment with that price little high but it is impossible to know if the price will decrease again under 1$ and I don't want miss a second time the train...

So yeah I'm kinda confident like you and I'm taking the risk to participate to that story. I really like people like you who are not afraid to take risk even when lot of people are leaving... For me it is really the sign of the winners hehe.

So yeah thank you again for that nice story. You enjoyed my mood for weeks.

Man, that is crazy! Just goes to show your incredible foresight and steady nerve all the way through the long downturn in Steemit.

You and @beanz are beautiful people and I'm over-the-moon when I hear great stories like this happening to great people like yourselves. Keep up the awesome work, mate. And btw, the car is utterly brilliant!! :)

Great story. I'm am still trying to get me and my kids out of poverty. I've been on steemit for a couple months now. It's been a struggle. But I believe in the platform. Just time and effort, and I believe things will start to change. Keep on steemin brother.

That's cool man. Really awesome story.

However as a car enthusiast please tell me you did not blow 30,000 USD on a Nissan leaf lolz!!!

Other Cars you could have gotten used for equal or less money:

  1. Jaguar XF SC 2013 - Only 41k miles and you would have saved over 3k up front: https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/708053487/overview/

  2. Used 2016 Toyota Tundra TRD 4WD only 7k miles: https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/709120791/overview/

Come on now. It's called Nissan Leaf because they extracted the engine from an electric leaf blower. 100 some odd miles before the battery dies, means you would never get anywhere in America, I guess Ireland is a lot smaller but come one, don't you want a big ass engine that burns gas thereby producing food for plants aka C02?

Keep writing those posts on steemit and good luck! Nxt time go for the Hummer! Those are perfect for navigating small European villages like a boss lulz! => https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/707846912/overview/

LOL, no thanks, I'll stick to my silent leaf blower :-P

Lulz, seriously though good on you for getting that car. Congrats.

You good decision. You really did followed your heart. Congratulations yo u made it.

Congratulations my friends every investment would be give you a good reward. I hope one day one day we have a lot of power here, i love the steem logo on your new car
I understand you compair the cost between a fuel car and electric car with the maintenance this is the best analisis not only the short time, every one would take decition thinkin in long time.
Best regard.

Not bad at all. Who knows you may be able to buy a Beamer,Benz, or Bentley from Steem LOL.

i'd be interested to see how well the batteries perform after a couple of years... i picked a new leaf for my sister a few years back, fully charged from the showroom the range was 110 miles i think, 2 years later the range was down to 75 miles... we didn't abuse the batteries as far as i know, occasionally using 1 hour fast chargers but normally using the 4 hour 7Kw charger at the house...

will have to follow you now, in the hope that you will report back in 2 years on how your batteries are doing...

nice car though, lovely to drive...wish i had one myself... maybe one day if i earn enough steem...

People aren't generally given good advice on the batteries. Aside from keeping them at a regular temperature (avoid freezing and avoid leaving the car out in the hot sun), you should aim to have the charge above 50% at all times and not go above 90% unless you need to for a long journey. Minimizing the amps while charging is also good, and avoiding using fast charges if possible.

If I buy my next car, it will be electric, too. And I will ask YOU for advice for handling it well.

Interesting information. I hadn't been aware that the care and feeding of the batteries was so unique.

i'll have to ask my sister if the people at the showroom told her that.. i don't remember any mention of keeping it between 50 and 90%... i think they advised us to use the standard charger to finish taking it up to 100% after the fast charger took it up to 90...

You're not given good advice on battery maintenance. In fairness, the 90% thing is relatively low importance. Discharging too much, temperature and amps all have a bigger impact than hitting 100% battery. All the same things apply to a mobile phone and laptop battery but nobody is told that either (and then people wonder why their phones lose charge over a year or two).

But it's also possible you just had bad batteries. If they deteriorate quite quickly they should be covered by warranty (they are for mine at least).

i know people who still run their phone battery flat before recharging, believing it will extend the life by avoiding shadows left behind... i guess that's just a relic from the old nicad days or something...oh well...

It is indeed, they had a concept called "battery memory". That was a very real thing, but doesn't apply to Li-ion batteries at all...

I was always skeptical about the advertised ranges on these vehicles. It just seemed too good to be true. How much does it cost to replace the battery on the Leaf?

Great story and post though.

i think a new battery is about £5000, could be wrong though... free if it's still in warranty i guess... i think the quoted milage is about right as long as you don't use the AC or heater on full blast... i used to drive from london down to brighton and would still have a bit of juice left when i got there...

Thanks.

So what would be the expected lifespan of the battery itself?

no idea on that one...

This is the power for believing in yourself and steemit.
keep on steemit!!

Wow, this is an inspirational post. I am very happy for you to be able to afford an electric car. At first I asked myself why not a Tesla but hearing all your thoughts on the car I guess it doesn't matter. It probably fits much better to you but you will be the judge of that. I guess you have earned it for believing in this platform. I am having difficulties to believe in it after I have seen so many downsides of Steemit. The price is stagnating and the payouts are low. Nevertheless I am grateful to have found this platform and to make a little bit of hope money. Nothing to live from (although weirdly I live from it 100% withouth having done a single payout yet - don't ask, difficult times) but the hope still prevails that the price will go through the roof one day. Damn you, impatience!

Quite simply, the most expensive Nissan Leaf is half the price of the cheapest available Tesla. I do plan to get a Model S someday, but Steem will need to go even higher ;-)

I am happy when I can afford the paper manual of a car. Then I will by myself some clothes. Haven't done that in 5 years.

sstttt lol....
This is incredible, maybe I'll dream a thousand times more, to get this

Now that is some branding! Electric cars are going to become more and more a thing as we hyper move towards renewable energies

Electric Cars are NOT New! Henry Ford's wife drove a Sunbeam! They later made appliances!

Nice work!!

So it turned out to be an electric car, I was slightly off with a Zeplin. I must keep an eye open for it around Dublin and give you or Beanz a wave.

This was the Z you were looking at:

Bit of an unintended red herring...

hahahahhhahahhah excellent. Zero Emissions from the Steem mobile. I'll keep my eyes open. If you see a crazy guy waving at you on a Dublin bike it will be me.

@demotruk this is so great to know that steemit fetched you a car and greater to it is you sheared it with all of us on @steemit. I wish all the best to me self as am in need of a mac-book guys do help me in that... @naseerbhat

That's so cool! I'd love to get an electric car and to buy it with Steem would be just amazing. I am starting to spend some of my earnings, but it will be a while before I have enough for a car. Enjoy driving your Steemit car

Am be @beanz driver if she allows me to drive her around.....

Haha she's beautiful to drive , feels like a lil spaceship ;)

am jealous.......Grinning

I'll be making money in Steamit! One day I buy it new motorcycle Indian Scout boober. PRICE 11999$ . Thas my goal on Steemit

This is really cool @demotruk and also one of my goals with steem I would love to be able to drive, but firstly I really need to get a new computer as mine as a serious blue screen of death problem and it makes writing posts for steemit a very long and frustrating process.

AMAZING NEWS.. This is my first comment on steam.. I have actually installed chargers for these cars ( and some teslas :O :O ) but to think you guys are buying these things from steem... yay makes me so excited.. well done :)

Good on ye! I'll keep me eyes peeled! If ye see a mad aul wan wavin' wildly whilst weavin' a Dublin bike thru the traffic..... that's ME.

woow, sweet car, happy for you

Absolutely delighted for you man. Won't be long before someone turns up at one of the Dublin meet-ups and says they discovered Steemit after seeing it on a car! This was a great way to give back to the community.

This is really amazing. I hope someday to be able to buy some cool stuff and pay some respects to the platform that allowed me to do it! :) Maybe I should move here in the states you'd be hard pressed to find a charging station in a whole state let alone every 100 miles...

what a great idea to put the logo on your new car!
I have a small list of items that i would like to purchase - a fridge and washing machine at the top of my list so am so grateful to be on Steemit.

That's a great story but I see you have a great influencer in @beanz. I like the investment story since that is the way I came in. Posting is a work in progress but is as you say part of the uniqueness of this investment. There are very few investments that you can have such a tangible interaction with on a daily basis that makes them grow.

The steemwhales page was cool. I did not know it existed and of course i had to try it out. It gave me the benefit of the doubt on whale status. Perhaps wanting to be one counts :)

This story is so good, it's un-be-leaf-able! 😝

Congratulations, @demotruk this achievement of yours is very inspiring. Some people just believe that they can make millions on this platform without investing. Yes they will make some money short-term. The real money lies in the accounts of those who are investors. I wasn't opportuned to join steemit when steem was selling for $0.07. I joined in March this year when steem was selling for $0.22 and started stocking up on steem power. Today, after about 5 months, I am happy to see about 5,000 SP in my account. Enjoy!!!

Nice job @demotruk. That vehicle will draw a lot of attention to the platform. You're constantly going to be asked by strangers, "what does it mean?"

Steem on, sir.

We already have had that, yes. Pretty cool :-)

It's inspiring how you committed to the investment vs. following trends. Great example of consistently working toward achieving your goals, @demotruk. Thank you for sharing the post and creatively propagating local awareness.

that's really cool. i was just looking the leaf! :) nice one with the steem logo on it, did you put ya steem id too? you should!

I thought about it but favoured minimalism. You often see commercial vehicles with way too much information/noise on the decals. I wanted to err on the side of less.

fair enough. i can respect that.

This is one helluva story. CONGRATULATIONS to you and your sister. You people are the real motivation for us newbies. Thank you so much for sharing the success story here.

@demotruk inspiring. Having just joined STEEM this makes me more optimistic about posting and enjoying other posts from follow steemians. Congratulations and I have decided to follow you due to your fantastic content. Thank you.

I have to shout WAW 1000x for this, it's really great. Maybe i will make my house with visual steemit

@demotruk congratulations. You are my inspiration. I'm so happy for you. I wish to share this type of testimony soon. 🎊

This has ignited hope for the Minnows in Steemit, there's hope for us.
BTW, 100% electric? This is so cool. Farewell to fossil fuel.

Congratulations brother. You worked for it. Enjoy your money.

That car is looking BEAST BRO!!

Wow, congrats!!The car looked great!

What a great post @demotruk. I am still waiting on that first pack of steem gum myself, but it is great to see that it works! I am now following to see what you buy next... maybe the whole tree.. haha.. :) UV and RS as well.

My dream electric car would be Teslas new Model 3. Until it can be sent to Europe, it probably takes another 3 years. Anything else than electric cars is nonsense.

Yeah, if I could have got one in a reasonable timeframe I would have chosen the Model 3 for sure. By the time I could get a Model 3 delivered, I hope that I will be looking at Model S instead :-P

Yes, the Model S is just incredible. My daughter, living nearby Chicago, has got a Model S. I visited her last year and since then, I am addicted to electric cars, especially to Tesla. Wow, what a difference to a normal combustion-engine.

Hi, just a short note: You probably have already a source for personalized stuff, like T-Shirts and other merchandizing products, but in case you are looking for a reliable company, I am offering since yesterday an Online-Shop to get products with steemit-logos printed on them. May I kindly ask you to look at my just translated post (from German to English) regarding this shop. https://goo.gl/3d81mL Thank you very much for your time. Any help would be very much appreciated.

This is amazing news @demotruk. keep it up.
