Para hoy les tengo una canción de una de mis bandas más favoritas que habla sobre algo por lo cual todos pasamos frecuentemente, el terrible, el abominable, el insufrible y el despreciable aburrimiento jajaja. Pues bien, no hay un cantante que escriba mejor sobre este tema que Billie Joe Armstrong. La siguiente canción es una oda al aburrimiento adolescente. Les hablo de Longview de la banda estadounidense de punk Green Day.
Today I have a song from one of my favorite bands that talks about something we all have go through frequently, the terrible, abominable and despicable boredom hahaha. Well, there is no singer who writes better about this theme than Billie Joe Armstrong. The next song is an ode to teenage boredom. I´m talking about Longview from USA punk band Green Day.
Longview forma parte del disco Dookie, el tercero que editó la banda, primero con una multinacional, y que los dio a conocer en todo el mundo, logrando vender en ese mismo año más de 10 millones de copias. Este álbum, que salió bajo el sello Reprise Records, se grabó entre los meses de Septiembre y Octubre de 1993 en los estudios Fantasy en Berkeley, California y lo produjo Rob Cavallo junto a la banda. Longview es la canción número 4 del disco y dura 3:59 minutos, casi 4 minutos, algo no muy usual tomando en cuenta que las canciones de Green Day de esa época, a duras penas llegaban a los tres minutos. La canción empieza con una muy interesante y pegajosa línea de bajo que va surgiendo en ascenso al final de Chump, la canción que le antecede, y que solo dos segundos de pausa separan a una de la otra, aunque el bajo es lo que más resalta durante la canción, con melodías que van subiendo y bajando de ritmo, de la calma a la locura. A pesar de que Green Day ya tenía en su haber dos discos editados con el sello independiente Lookout! (1,039-Smoothed Out Slappy Hours de 1991 y Kerplunk de 1992), Longview fue el primer sencillo promocional de su carrera y se lanzó el 1 de Febrero de 1994.
Longview is part of Dookie, the third record that released the band, first with a major-label, and launched them to popularity all around the world, selling more than 10 millions of copies in 1994. This album, released by Reprise Records, was recorded between September and October of 1993 in Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, California and produced by Rob Cavallo and the band. Longview is the song number 4 of the record and lasts 3:59 minutes, almost 4 minutes, something not very usual considering that Green Day´s songs of that time barely reached three minutes. The song starts with a very interesting and catchy bass line that is rising at the end of Chump, the song that precedes it, and that only two seconds of pause separate one from the other, although the bass is what stands out the most during the song, the melodies go up and down in rhythm, from calm to madness. In spite of Green Day already had two records edited with indie label Lookout! (1,039-Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, 1991 and Kerplunk 1992), Longview was Green Day´s first promotional single and it was released on February 1, 1994.
Cuando la escena musical estaba dominada por las nostálgicas, poderosas y en algunos casos deprimentes letras que caracterizaban al grunge, Green Day llegó con una nueva energía tanto musical como lírica, tratando en muchas canciones temas un poco más ligeros, divertidos y hasta jocosos. Fue como un cambio de chip, un giro de 360° en la música que se estaba escuchando. A diferencia de muchas bandas que tras la muerte de Kurt Cobain buscaron aprovechar el momento, con lo que se llamó post-grunge, Green Day se mantuvo firme en su estilo y razón de ser y el público, la industria y las ventas los premiaron. Eso no sólo los favoreció a ellos sino que abrió el camino para muchas otras bandas de punk que venían trabajando desde sellos independientes para lograr calar en la muy difícil industria musical de la época, como The Offspring, Bad Religion, Rancid, NOFX, Pennywise, etc.
When the musical scene was dominated by the nostalgic, powerful and in some cases depressing lyrics that characterized grunge, Green Day came with a new musical and lyrical energy, talking in many songs about more soft, funny and amusing themes. It was like a chip change, a 360° turn in the music that was on the radios. Contrary to many bands that after Kurt Cobain´s death tried to take advantage of the moment with what was called post-grunge, Green Day stayed true to their style and spirit and the audience, the industry and the sales rewarded them for that. That not only favored them but also led the road for many other punk bands that were working in indie record labels trying to get known in the very hard musical industry of those years like The Offspring, Bad Religion, Rancid, NOFX, Pennywise, etc.
Longview saca a la luz las consecuencias del aburrimiento en un adolescente y las junta para generar un caos y un panorama ciertamente muy deprimente. Pero ¿qué estaba pasando por la mente de Billie Joe cuando escribió esta canción? Pues bien, viajemos en el tiempo, a principio de los años ´90. Billie Joe vive en Rodeo, California, un pueblo sin muchas opciones de entretenimiento donde lo más divertido se resume en ver televisión, masturbarse, tomar ácido y fumar marihuana. En una entrevista en Guitar Legends Magazine del año 2005, Billie Joe hace esta descripción: “Supongo que sólo era vivir en los suburbios en una ciudad de mierda donde ni siquiera puedes encontrar una buena canción en la radio. Estaba viviendo en Rodeo, California, a unos 20 minutos afuera de Oakland. Allí no había nada que hacer y era un lugar realmente aburrido.”
Longview brings to light the consequences of teenage boredom and mixes them to generate a chaos and a certainly very depressing panorama. But, what was going on through Billie Joe´s mind when he wrote this song? Well, lets go back in time, to the early ´90´s. Billie Joe lives in Rodeo, California, a small town with no much entertaining options where the most funny things are watch TV, masturbation, do acid and smoke dope. In 2005, Billie Joe makes this description to Guitar Legends Magazine: "I guess it was just living in the suburbs in a sort of shit town where you can't even pull in a good radio station. I was living in Rodeo, California, about 20 minutes outside of Oakland. There was nothing to do there, and it was a real boring place."
La canción es totalmente autobiográfica y se inspira en su adolescencia cuando según él mismo, sus hábitos de masturbación eran crónicos, se sentía solo, aburrido y como un completo perdedor, no tenía novia ni vida propia así que Longview es una instantánea de esa época de su vida. Sin embargo, y a pesar de lo deprimente que pueda parecer el panorama de esta canción, Billie Joe le dijo a VH1: “Es una canción sobre tratar de no sentirse patético y solitario.”
The song is completely autobiographical and it´s inspired in his adolescence when according Billie himself, his masturbation habits were chronic, he was feeling alone, bored and a complete loser, with no girlfriend and no life so Longview is a snapshot of that time of his life. However and besides the depressing panorama that this song presents, Billie Joe said to VH1: ”It's a song about trying not to feel pathetic and lonely”.
La canción como tal, surgió en uno de esos tantos días de rutinario aburrimiento que ya era normal en las vidas de Billie Joe y el bajista Mike Dirnt. Estando los dos en la casa del cantante, Billie le mostró a Mike un boceto de lo que sería la letra de Longview y Mike, bajo los efectos del LSD, comenzó a improvisar unos acordes de bajo que le parecieron increíbles y perfectos para la letra que Billie había escrito. Al día siguiente, ya sobrio y habiendo superado el lisérgico viaje, no lograba recordar esa línea de bajo que tanto les había gustado la noche anterior. A duras penas pudieron recomponer algo de esa melodía y lo que hoy conocemos como Longview es lo mejor que sus habilidades de ese entonces les pudieron hacer recordar jajaja. Según le contó Mike Dirnt a Rolling Stone en 1995: “Cuando Billie me dio un ritmo aleatorio para Longview yo estaba demasiado freído en ácido. Estaba recostado contra la pared con mi bajo apoyado sobre mi regazo. Sólo vino a mí. Dije: “Billie, escucha esto. ¿No es la cosa más loca que hayas escuchado?” Más tarde me llevó mucho tiempo para poder tocarla pero tenía sentido cuando estuve drogado.”
The song as such, came out in one of those many days of routine boredom that were normal in Billie Joe´s and bassist Mike Dirnt´s lives. Being both in the singer´s house, Billie showed Mike an outline of Longview´s lyrics and Mike under the effects of acid started to improve some bass lines he found amazing and perfect for Billie´s lyrics. Next day, already sober and having overcome the lysergic trip, he couldn´t remember those chords they liked so much the night before. With great difficulty they could recomposed some of that melody and what we know now as Longview it´s the best that their abilities back then could make them remember hahaha. According to what Mike Dirnt said to Rolling Stone magazine in 1995: "When Billie gave me a shuffle beat for Longview, I was frying on acid so hard. I was lying up against the wall with my bass lying on my lap. It just came to me. I said, "Bill, check this out. Isn't this the wackiest thing you've ever heard?" Later, it took me a long time to be able to play it, but it made sense when I was on Drugs."
El nombre de esta canción en realidad no tiene nada que ver con la letra y es un simple homenaje, si se puede decir así, a la ciudad donde por primera vez la tocaron en vivo en la primavera de 1992, Longview, Washington, una localidad a una hora al norte de Portland. La idea no fue de la banda sino de su amigo y roadie Kaz Hope, antes de esto, la canción era conocida con el título Same Old Shit (I'm Fucking Wasted), (La misma vieja mierda (Estoy jodidamente perdido).
The name of this song has nothing to do with the lyrics and is just a simple tribute (if you want to call it that way), to Longview, Washington, the city where they performed the song live for the first time in spring 1992, a place an hour north of Portland. The idea was not from the band but from his friend and roadie Kaz Hope, before that, the song was known as Same Old Shit (I'm Fucking Wasted).
Nada bueno que ver en la tv, un pesado aburrimiento que nunca termina, pereza a nivel deprimente, falta de motivación, soledad y continuas referencias a la masturbación como única diversión pero que el mismo aburrimiento ha hecho que pierda su gracia. Precisamente, fueron esas evidentes alusiones a la masturbación las que captaron la atención de muchos jóvenes en ese momento, frases como: “Muerdo mi labio y cierro mis ojos, llévame al paraíso” o la típica leyenda urbana que dice que la masturbación excesiva produce ceguera: “Algunos dicen "renuncia o me quedaré ciego". Pero es solo un mito”.
Nothing good to watch on the TV, a heavy and never ending boredom, laziness on a depressing level, lack of motivation, loneliness and continuous references to masturbation as the only fun, but that the same boredom has made it lose its grace. Those overt allusions to masturbation were precisely what captured the attention of many youth of the time, lines like: “Bite my lip and close my eyes, take me away to paradise” or the typical urban legend that masturbation causes blindness: “Some say “quit or I´ll go blind”. But is just a myth”.
Longview no solamente fue el primer sencillo promocional que tuvo Green Day en su carrera, sino que también se convirtió en el primer vídeo que hicieron, el mismo fue dirigido por Mike Kohr. Como curiosidad, este vídeo se grabó en Berkeley en el sótano de una casa donde solía vivir la banda. Minutos antes de empezar a grabar y mientras miraba la tv, Billie Joe se enteró de la muerte de Kurt Cobain. Aunque tuvo una gran rotación en la cadena MTV, no fue un hit como el single que le seguiría, el poderoso “Basket Case”, que los catapultó a la fama a nivel mundial. Cabe resaltar que Longview fue nominado a tres premios MTV Video Music Awards en 1994 por Mejor Video de Grupo, Mejor Video Alternativo y Mejor Artista Nuevo, aunque no ganó ninguno.
Longview not only was the first promotional single in Green Day´s career but also became their first music video and was directed by Mark Kohr. As a curiosity, the video was recorded in Berkeley, California, in the basement of a house the band use to live in. A few minutes before they started filming Billie Joe was watching TV and saw in the news that Kurt Cobain was dead. Although the video had an intense airplay in MTV, it wasn´t a hit like the single that would follow, the powerful “Basket Case" that launched them to worldwide stardom. Longview was nominated to three MTV Video Music Awards in 1994 for Best Group Video, Best Alternative Video and Best New Artist, they didn´t win any.
