Hanging out by the water

in #nature4 months ago (edited)

Its nice to find a place to sit down for a few minutes and just enjoy the surroundings. With Autumn right around the corner its time to enjoy some of the local plants before they go dormant for the year.

The lily pads provide a good place for fish, frogs and turtles to hide under.

Parked my electric dirt bike on a bridge and just relaxed for a little bit.

Lots of plants growing around here, not all edible. That Pokeweed seems happy, hope the birds like it. Not safe for humans to eat.

The trees provide a little bit of cover from the sun, along with it being a slightly cloudy day.

It was a nice visit, but cannot stay for long.. Got lots to do.

My Granny used to cook Pokeweed, she would boil it and then change the water. She did this boiling and changing 3 or 4 times before eating it.
Here is a recipe if you want to try it. Be sure to only eat when it is young and do not eat when it has berries.

Ingredients
1 pound young, green pokeweed shoots and leaves
4–6 oz bacon, hog jowl, or country ham
1 medium yellow onion, diced
4–6 eggs
Salt, pepper, and hot sauce to taste

Instructions for preparing poke sallet
Harvest only young growth. In the early spring, harvest only the tender, green shoots that are less than a foot tall. Do not pick any plant that is mature, has developed a red color on its stem, or is bearing berries.

Separate and prepare the shoots. Wash the shoots and leaves well. Separate the leaves from the stems. Peel any red or tough parts from the stems.
Perform the first boil. Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil. Add the pokeweed greens and stems and boil for 5–20 minutes, depending on the recipe. A longer boil is safer.

Drain and repeat. Drain the greens in a colander and rinse them thoroughly with cool water. Return the greens to the pot, cover with fresh, clean water, and bring back to a boil. Boil again for 5–20 minutes. Many sources recommend a third boil for maximum safety. Repeat rinsing and draining. After the final boil, drain the greens one last time. Rinse them in cool water and squeeze out as much excess water as possible.

Fry the bacon and onions. In a skillet, cook the bacon or hog jowl until it's brown and crispy. Remove the meat but leave the drippings in the pan. Sauté the diced onion in the drippings until translucent.

Sauté the pokeweed. Add the boiled and drained pokeweed greens to the skillet with the onions. Cook for several minutes, stirring to combine.

Add eggs and serve. Push the greens to one side of the skillet. Scramble the eggs in the other side until cooked to your liking. Mix everything together with the crumbled bacon, and season with salt, pepper, and hot sauce to taste. Serve hot with toast.

Ah interesting, if you cook it early on and make sure to strain out the water many times you can still eat it.. Nice to know, maybe that is something to try next year when they are young.

thanks for sharing your grandmas recipe, I will go back to it next year if I try it out.

I don't have Granny's recipe, I got it from the internet. She would cook it with bacon and onions, after the water changes, and eat it like collards. I would like to try the internet recipe.

Looks like a nice pond.. have a good day.. Cheers

This is an amazing place, man. I'm sure you won't find anything like it in the entire galaxy. You parked your "starship" on this planet perfectly :)

Really nothing like finding a cool spot to stay and take a break.

Cool bike✨

Nice spot to stay for a while, have a nice day ☺️

Looks like a great place to do some fishing. Nice and quiet! What kind of fish live in the water around your place?

Not sure what kind of fish are in that pond, never fished there. Just stopped by with my dirt bike for a few minutes.

Wow, you have a dirty bike. I think clean is the best option.

You've chosen the perfect place to unwind amidst your busy schedule. Those fruits look so fresh, a delicious snack for the birds. Hopefully, they'll find them before they fall.
