Quoting the official press release from NiceHash Miner:

Official press release regarding the NiceHash security breach

Unfortunately, there has been a security breach involving NiceHash website. We are currently investigating the nature of the incident and, as a result, we are stopping all operations for the next 24 hours.

Importantly, our payment system was compromised and the contents of the NiceHash Bitcoin wallet have been stolen. We are working to verify the precise number of BTC taken.

Clearly, this is a matter of deep concern and we are working hard to rectify the matter in the coming days. In addition to undertaking our own investigation, the incident has been reported to the relevant authorities and law enforcement and we are co-operating with them as a matter of urgency.

We are fully committed to restoring the NiceHash service with the highest security measures at the earliest opportunity.

We would not exist without our devoted buyers and miners all around the globe. We understand that you will have a lot of questions, and we ask for patience and understanding while we investigate the causes and find the appropriate solutions for the future of the service. We will endeavour to update you at regular intervals.

While the full scope of what happened is not yet known, we recommend, as a precaution, that you change your online passwords.

We are truly sorry for any inconvenience that this may have caused and are committing every resource towards solving this issue as soon as possible.

This is the second bad news today :)

What this means?

That all the funds that you've had in your NiceHash wallet is lost.

That the service is no longer available and we don't know when, if ever, will be functional again.

I do hope that the company will somehow be able to return stolen funds. It is not likely, though.

I also hope that the information above is real. I am not calling this a scam. Many times announcements like this one ended in a service and the owners disappearing with the money.

Personal take

I have some $126 at NiceHash wallet at this time. Not much, fortunately. I am kicking myself virtually to have switched from local wallet to their online wallet. A mistake to learn from.

What is your situation and take on this news?

Sort:

I've used nicehash as a mining pool only. never used their wallet and they have been hacked before. the people didn't learn the leason. but being hacked two times now is just not a good thing for the platform reputation and I guess they haven't been hacked. I guess they've just stolen themselves some act of greed.

Prudent approach not to rely on their wallet. I did the same before. Now I was mining to their wallet just to collect some referral fees. OK, it is lost now but no big deal, fortunately.

I believe that they have real issues. I know, the word used is believe and not know :)

What are you using now for a mining pool?

Their profits are enough to build the most protected site ever with any costs. but they didn't and its their problem not people problem.

Currently still trying some mining pools. it very hard to reach a miner like nicehash.

From their explanation the thieves managed to infiltrate one of their office computers. A backdoor attack, so to say ...

Lolz lih sm hotu o tem pisat! Cool post!

Shitty situation for everyone! :(

:) Eh, kopipejst plus malo komentarja. Kar napiši še svojega in se polinkava. Druga slaba novica je pa Hexabot ... A se mi danes ne da pisati še o tem.

Shitty situation, indeed. For the users and for the company.

I've been half-expecting this, ever since I wrote Why I no longer recommend Nicehash for CPU mining. Guess they couldn't keep up the flow in the face of rising bitcoin prices. I was hoping to squeak across the finish line once more before they closed up shop, but it looks like I'm out about $127 at today's prices.

This is especially concerning:

While the full scope of what happened is not yet known, we recommend, as a precaution, that you change your online passwords.

Almost as if their mining client was infected with malware.

Interesting we have about the same amount in limbo :)

Yes, but we don't know enough - yet.

Well, I was partial to NiceHash because they are my compatriots. Now I am switching to MinerGate...
