Firewood collection is picking back up

in #offgrid5 days ago (edited)

The days have been getting chilly, and the nights have been well into the freezing temperatures. So the wood furnace is back online and burning through wood. Its always consuming so I must find more wood to feed the fire. Luckily its been another year since I collected wood, so lots of dead fall is all around to find and collect.

Using my electric UTV, a Polaris Ranger Kenetic. I pile the wood in the bed and take it back to the wood furnace.

I am working on getting my trailer all outfitted for wood collection, but for now I must carry it in the small UTV bed.

We cut them down to size, keeping the logs under 100 pounds for easy lifting. And short enough to fit into the furnace with the door closed.

All of this wood was from fallen trees, so its been drying out for months now.

These logs are nice and light due to how dry they are, it was nice dealing with them.. lol

I have many piles to pick from, so over time I think I will go through just about all of it.

Since its not really cold yet, we are mostly burning through twigs and smaller wood. But as it gets colder we will focus on larger logs. As they burn longer.

It takes many trips using the UTV bed, so getting the trailer all set up is in the plan.

Still a little chilly this morning, around 37. Wearing my gloves and long sleeves to protect my skin from the dry weather and the branches. I tend to get all cut up from them over the winter. So do my shirts and shorts.. they get shredded.

It is quite early in the year, I always wonder if I will find enough wood throughout the winter. Then I remember I live in a forest. So I just have to go deeper into the woods, away from the roads to find what need.

We cleared a bunch of trash out of the woods during the summer left behind by the previous owners, lots of trees had to be removed as trash was growing in it. But we picked out the stumps and used the clean ones to burn.

Once I have my trailer I should be able to haul a lot more at a time. This is about the max the UTV can handle in its bed. Much less than the towing amount.

Luckily its not too cold yet, so I can deal with moving less wood at a time. But soon it will be much colder, so having my trailer working is in the plans.

So yeah, firewood collection is what I am spending most of my time doing right now. If you do not hear from me much, I am just outside cutting up, hauling and piling up firewood to stay warm. Its nice to have a wood boiler to make use of all this firewood. It heats our water and keeps the home warm.

A wise man once said, having too much wood never hurt anyone.

By reading your post and watching pics of wood I remember my village life..
We also cut wood and burn it in winter..
The way you are carrying the wood it's interesting brother...
Love your post..
How you cut it..
You did not show pictures of cutting wood.
Wonderful forest view..
Dry leaves scenery looks awesome.

It is quite a bit of work, I make use of a chainsaw and a sawzall to cut it all.

Glad you enjoyed the post.

Yes bro I enjoyed your post..
Keep sharing

That looks like a lot of wood indeed is that enough for a week ?

Congratulations !!

Did you know that @stresskiller is also a witness now ?

When its warm it does last awhile but when it gets colder indeed we will go through much more.

Yeah man already voting for you. You had my vote before your first block ;-)

yes i noticed that , thanks for the vote really did help a lot , it's my standard curation banner for this month .

Just surpised how many votes there are still on inactive witnesses .

Cheer up bro in collecting firewood, I hope this winter you win in fighting the cold. Be careful when looking for wood in the forest. cheer up💪

Hah I am having fun collecting it. And yeah being careful too.

Getting ready for some warmer days with these logs....the chill is here too...and we are wrapped in woolen.

Indeed all this firewood should keep me quite warm.

I was thinking about you the other day and the fact that we hadn't seen a post from you in a while. I'm glad to hear things are going well for you. My wife and I just started planning our next trip down to VA to visit our niece in the Spring. It will be a nice way to close out the cold Michigan winter!

Ah yeah things are slowing down around here outdoors, but now new jobs are picking up like firewood collection.

Oh cool.. hope yall have a good time down south.

Ahaa, preparations for winter are underway. Some of these logs are quite big and although they are dry, they will still not be light. Well, keep doing the things you enjoy! 😊👍🏼

Hah yeah they are quite big but being so dry they were not much trouble to move.

thanks

When I was a kid my dream was to be a forest ranger and live in the forest :)

Hah I know what you mean, I do enjoy living in the forest.

Haha! The season looks like it is tossing you as many distractions as it is me. Not that I have as much real work to do as you to prepare for the winter but we gotta get posting more!

Love how you are building your array of toys to help with all of the processes you need to tackle on the homestead. Wood is such a versatile resource when you have that much of it off grid. Honest work!

Hah yeah winter keeps me quite busy collecting firewood.

Indeed it is, glad to have a forest of it surrounding me. With every storm more wood falls and is good to use.

With your solar plus the wood you are pretty energy independent. Electric vehicles are the future. I expect gas/petrol stations will feel the pinch as people can just charge at home and not go there for all the other things they sell. There is talk here of charging road tax on electric cars as they have been exempt to far, but I'm not sure how that will work as they are talking about charging per mile.

Yep sustainability is what I am going for here.

Ah yeah I heard EVs are taxed on the road quite differently than conventional vehicles. Hopefully they will retain special treatment.

These logs are nice and light due to how dry they are, it was nice dealing with them.. lol

Lol, do you mean light, light or medium light? I bet I can’t move them effortlessly even if I try😂

PS: Welcome back🥳

Id say medium light, though if they were green logs it would be more closer to the 100 pound mark.

Hehe it goes help me keep in shape.

The cold season is coming to those countries.

Sure is.. getting freezing weather already.

woa thats nice. cutting wood is a little bit harder but it seems so easy for you hehe there is no sign of you being tired. hoping you can still find plenty of wood to use in the colder season.

I pace myself, and come back later in the day if I get too tired. But I usually collect for a few hours before stopping.

thanks, me too.

I loved doing this kind of activity when I was young with my dad.

AMD? LOL they set the W upside down... 😁

lol its probably for ambient temperature since it says 37 next to it.. so it was 37F outside.

Didn't think of that... my head is programmed to see things I have to deal with every day LOL

It was a tiring day, huh... but the pickup truck made it easier. By the way, a pickup truck of that size is really nice. What kind of power and fuel does it use?

Hey... I'm already powered up, thanks for your advice in advance 🙏🔥

Hah not too bad..Yeah a bigger vehicle would help.. The UTV its an electric vehicle.

Nice man, glad you are powering up.

It saves fuel and resources. There hasn't been any innovation like that here. All vehicles and operations on our coffee plantations use diesel-powered vehicles...

Well... that was based on your suggestion, and I'm considering it... after last month's coffee harvest 😆

Collecting and burning wood is awesome, it feels like returning to the roots and connecting with the surroundings

Indeed, it has a special feeling to it for sure.

It sounds like a lot of work, but there’s something grounding in gathering your own firewood, especially when the cold starts creeping in. I like how you balance the reality of the labor with the appreciation for having so much wood available right in your surroundings. Nature really offers us pretty much everything we need 😀

Yeah it is but well worth the effort I think.

We really need that heat on the coldest of days, so glad to have logs stacked up ready to burn.

It's great that you don't have to cut down trees to collect the necessary wood!
Bravo!
Happy Saturday!

Sure is, so many acres with just dead fall all over the place.. just got to collect it.

In my place those who takes this type of wood is usually for baking purpose. They dry it, axe it and use it to heat up the oven

Nice, I do not cut mine up with an axe but maybe I should.. I bet that is some tasty bread.

Yeah very tasty. And over here (Africa) we believe that a good firewood makes food more tasty. The truth is if your firewood is dry and burns well it makes cooking or grilling easier

It's great that you have the truck to transport all that wood, and it looks like it's good quality wood.

OMG,this blogger is totally gorgeous! 😍
