Origami Guide

in #origami5 years ago (edited)

Recently on one of the Facebook origami groups I followed someone asked where they should look for a more complex model to try after having mastered the origami crane. I rifled through my bookmarks and provided the following. It's a little bit less daunting to look through individual artists websites and if you do fall in love with their work you know that you can offer them support through patron or buying their books or even just a friendly comment.

Hong Kong Origami Academy
https://www.kadechan.com/diagrams
For super complex dragons and aliens

Joseph Wu’s website
http://www.origami.as/home.html
Ranging in difficulty from simple to complex

Francesco Guarnieri
https://guarnieri-origami.blogspot.com/?m=1
Intermediate to easy modular weaves and stars (very pretty)

Nick Robinson’s website
http://origami.me.uk/diagrams/
Simple to Intermediate dishes and stars, an elephant head and a really cool Escher fish modular.

David Mitchell's website
http://www.origamiheaven.com/origamiunfolded.htm
Wide range of origami including modular, flexagons, puzzles, bowls and boxes. He has also written some interesting articles on designing your own models.

For videos you have the master
Jo Nakashima

Beautifully detailed videos which also include traditional diagrams in the top right hand corner. Wide range of videos with my favourite being the dragon bookmark.

&

Paper Kawaii
https://www.paperkawaii.com

Videos ranging from practical to fun. Simple to complex. Lovely presentation and easy to follow.

All but the top link are individual origami artists who are amazing and definitely deserve any support you would like to extend. This is by no means a comprehensive list nor does it include the large archival like websites or even all my favourites, however it is a place to start.

I hope this manages to help a few people in their explorations.

Yours sincerely, Grace.

Welcome back to #ccc and thank you for a wonderful post!

That's so cool. I think the last time I attempted origami was about 30 years ago in primary school. You've got my intrigued!

Jo Nakashima is the one link I would highly recommend if you do wish to dive back in. This list is aimed more at skilled beginner, intermediate folders. The dragon model shown is a 25 minute tutorial, however Jo Nakashima has other videos around 5 minutes of interactive fun models like the jumping frog. What makes all the difference in his videos is that you will learn how to read traditional diagrams by following his instructions, giving you the skills to explore in full the other links on this page.

A good list to have, thank you! I'd like to include simple origami in photo shoots. I've already made attempts at it.

Anything in particular? I could post you the fold flat vase or the triangular gift bag at relatively low cost as they fit in a standard envelope.

Thank you, I will think about it when it comes to that. Usually I prefer spending countless hours doing stuff myself and then being furious about how it all went wrong.

I have no idea what that is like. I mean I always wanted to spend six hours making this eldrich crane. :) 20170806_194745.jpg
