parkrun - cycle, run, cycle

in #running6 years ago

I finally made it back to Letchworth parkrun for the first time in a couple of months. Getting up on time on a Saturday morning is an effort in itself. It was looking like a lovely morning, so I got out there. The sun was shining, but it was a little cool. As usual, I cycled the 5km there, which is mostly uphill. I should have left a little earlier as I only had about 10 minutes to recover before the start.

There were lots of people out.

Runners

I tend to hang back at the start, but this can mean passing lots in the first km. Not many came back past me over the race, just a few near the end when their finishing sprint was better than mine.

I was hoping for around 27 minutes and I achieved that according to Endomondo. The official results had me slightly slower, but then I had to run a little to the start line and the app may not get the distance exactly. I'm happy enough with how I did.

Stats

I'm glad the ride home is mostly downhill as I was lacking in energy. It probably didn't help that I cycled home yesterday for the first time in a while. I still want to do a longer run tomorrow, but I'll take that very steadily.

Cycle stats

I'm not out to win races or break records. I'm just an older guy trying to stay fit and motivated.

You have had sun down South, it's been raining all day in the North. I'm really impressed you cycled 5km to then do a run - that's truly impressive fitness. The park looks lovely and it's quite a size too - you certainly did a really quick time for that distance.

The route goes around some fields and through the park a couple of times. There's a nasty hill that I really dislike on the second lap, but I just have to keep going. It's been a great day here. I even swam in our unheated pool this evening :)

Nice Biathlon workout @steevc ! How do you feel now? You are getting stronger man!

I feel okay after a coffee. I find I recover pretty well these days. I remember when I started running that a short run would leave me feeling exhausted for an hour or more.

Yeah...building a good fit status takes time... just keep maintaining the level of training as you do.

I hope there's somewhere to chain up your bike, lots of thieves about.

There's some bike racks there. Not that my bike is anything special. There have been a lot stolen from our station, but they caught a guy for that. There are probably other crooks around

You keep recording some great times Steve. I've been quite pleased with myself as I've gone for a run with the dog three mornings this week instead of the usual walk. My times have been far from great but it has been a long while. The scales reflected my lack of exercise when I stood on them for the first time in a while yesterday.

At least you are getting out a few times a week. A lot of people do no real exercise. I just fit in what I can.

Glad to hear your fitness is improving so much.

Add a bit of swimming to the day and you could call it Iron Man training! :-)

... and that's a whole different level that I can't even aspire to :-)

Funnily enough I ended the day with a swim in our pool. Only about 200m, but then it was flippin' cold. I just feel I need to get maximum use from the pool before summer really ends. I don't really fancy triathlon. Running is enough for me

"I cycled the 5km there"

Impressive, exercising your way to the exercise! LOL.

I'd be daunted racing against people younger than me. We're not what we were. But your final line hit home with me. In reality, you're only racing yourself.

Well done, keep it up.

It makes me wonder when you will have to stop. What age is it that running is no longer possible or practical or helpful? 65 maybe?

I guess keep going until you know. :)

There are much older runners out there. Why stop if it's still fun?

So they just have like a 5k or whatever every weekend? It looks like it must be longer than that. Just curious do your schools have cross country as a sport? We do in the US, but I can't remember if you said that you do.

All parkrun events are 5km. I think most people can manage that. I did cross country at school, but I was never sporty. I regret not doing more sport through the years, but I'm making up for lost time

I hear you. I wish I had been a little more involved in sports as well. The draw to band was just too great though :p !

No need to be a masochist to run well... but a bit of pain could make you stronger. ;)
