Significant bug, error, or glitch on Splinterlands' Leaderboard

in #splinterlands3 years ago (edited)

The current season is ending shortly, so watch closely the leaderboard in the league you are playing, and when the new season starts, the Last Season leaderboard especially.

I have noticed this bug, error, glitch, or whatever it is by pure accident.
The thing is that last season (active during the second half of August), I was playing most of the time in the Bronze league, but before the end of the season, I decided to move forward into the Silver league.

Although having enough own Power even for the Gold III league, I decided to stay in the Silver league. That way, with the achieved number of 2901 Rating points, I would be able to compete for one of the first ten places in the Silver league.

Unfortunately, for some (to me still) unknown reason, 1002 points have been deducted from my Rating, and I unexpectedly ended the season with 1899 Rating points what put me in 1409th place instead among the first ten players in the same Silver league.

In other words, it wasn't a case of dropping down from one league to another because of eventual lack of Power (what was the unfortunate case with many other players), as I had enough of my own Power even for the higher league as I already said. And all of it even more, because I didn't rent or lend any of my own cards out by then.

So, how and why this 1002 Ranking points removal actually happened it's an entirely different story which I'm now trying to clarify and solve through the correspondence with Splinterlands' Support Team.

But this incident provoked me to start paying closer attention to the leaderboards, which brings me to this article's main topic.

Bug, error, or glitch on Splinterlands' Leaderboard

With the beginning of the new season (still, shortly active one, that lasts during the first half of September), I decided to skip this new season and not to play it. With that, I thought, I would enable Splinterlands' Support Team an easier and clearer view of my battles' history and the issue I've reported in my ticket.

Being out of the battlefield with some spare time available, I noticed how the data for the Last Season Leaderboard suddenly changed and how they are not the same as the one I screenshotted to attach to the ticket sent to Splinterlands Support Team.

Let me show you what I'm talking about!

At first glance, maybe you still wouldn't see the problem, so I created the following table that compares the data from all the above screenshots.

2nd_half_of_august_season_silver_league.png

Now you can see how at one moment, Last Season Silver League Leaderboard data were showing that first place took the player @smukkers with 3073 Ranking points. In contrast, the same player showed up in 4th place several days later with 2606 Ranking points. A couple of days further, the player was again in the first position but this time with 2972 Ranking points, to end up with today's data (if they are still there and the same) which are the same ones as the one from the first screenshot from August 31, 2021.

All in all, there are 14 players (@smukkers, @johnmelissaski, @backflip55, @dragon.rider, @blackzoda, @j-p-bs, @nexneveau, @sevenoh-fiveoh, @raketenklaus, @kira1995, @baupade, @senojuro, @mious, and @cornavirus) who are appearing, disappearing, and/or changing positions on that Last Season Silver League Leaderboard.

Impossible!

Furthermore, and what worries me the most is the following.

If this is happening (and as I just showed you, it apparently does) for the past season (data), which is finished and closed, so there shouldn't be any changes, how much more likely something like that is happening on the active season leaderboards where the data is changing almost every second???

As I said at the beginning, I really don't know what and why is causing this issue, bug, error, or glitch, but it's certainly something that needs severe close attention as it might affect every single player, including even the game creators, developers and the rest of the Splinterlands' leading team who are playing the game too.

Did you report this discovery in Discord? You probably did. I can't see any bugs-related channel. Just tech-support ...

https://discord.gg/rHAUdhHr

Good luck with your plays in the future :)

@tipu curate

I firstly reported my personal issue on Discord. Unfortunately, the staff there didn't understand or didn't want to understand the issue. They were replying some default answers that doesn't apply to my case. There is also a possibility they didn't know what happened and even less why. I realized, the staff there is not informed or educated enough about such deeper game functionalities, so I decided not to insist on some answers there. Instead, I sent a ticket by email to their official support. The reply I've got after 11 days was speculating about in-game possibilities that might triggered the deduction of my points. Unfortunately, all those speculations don't have anything with my concrete case, so I made a reply (ticket update), as it was suggested in the mail in case if it doesn't answer or solve my issue. That update/reply was sent a week ago, but I didn't receive any reply ever since.

Regarding the leaderboard issue, except posting the link of this post in their post-promotional channel(s) I didn't make any special bug report in their tech-support channel on Discord, as I'm afraid the staff working there wouldn't know how to deal with it, same as they didn't know how to deal with my private issue in the game.

I can see now that the problem persist in active league as well. Whenever I refresh the page I find different active leaderboard. Sometimes, it's a leaderboard with different players, some other time it's a leaderboard with the same players but with different rating points where the points fluctuate again +/- 1000.

Honestly, I don't know what to think anymore!

Take a look at screenshots I just took, and you'll see! Pay attention on the rating numbers!
(It's only 2 minutes and 20 seconds in-between those two entirely different leaderboards, and I really don't know which one is the right one!?!)

Bronze league - Active Leaderboard 1

Bronze league - Active Leaderboard 2

Never the less, thank you very much for your concern, comment and support!

Here is what I see now. It is in line with your second screenshot.

When I hard-refresh the page, the leaderboard stays roughly the same. Numbers change slightly, of course, because these players are active all the time.

Yet, they shouldn't change by so much.

You could mention (tag) the Splinterlands bosses if you think you deserve their attention :) Go straight to the top.

Can you please, click on any other league leaderboard and then return back to see if it would stay the same?!

Regarding tagging Splinterlands' bosses, I was thinking about that, but wanted first go by some more or less regular procedure, as I think they might be occupied with more important things like, proper functioning of new Amazon servers (especially when it comes to the transaction speed), launching new Chaos legion card collection, land launch, etc.
Besides, that's something, I suppose, they are paying for their tech support staff. Meaning, even if they can't solve the issue, they should report it to developers or whoever will take care about it from there on, and take care it would be solved. Otherwise, in my opinion, this staff would be more or less useless.

My second reason, why I didn't tag the bosses is avoiding their attention, not because I deserve it or not, but because it's not about me at all. So, I wanted to avoid possible different interpretation.
It's an issue considering every single player, and especially those that are competing for first 20 or so places by the end of the season, as it's not the same if, i.e., competing for the first place a player should achieve 2000-something or 3000-something rating points. Huge difference!

You are right. It's wrong when you switch from Bronze to Silver and back to Bronze. Then it's right again :) The behaviour is inconsistent.

I still think that this is a major bug and that top brass should be made aware of it. Luckily, it's not something that would harm players in any way.

I'm glad you saw it and fully understand now what I'm talking about!
Unfortunately, I'm not so sure as you are that it wouldn't harm players, as I don't know to explain otherwise disappearing of my 1002 rating points (two seasons ago).

You can't say these two things are connected. Still, everything should be on record. It's blockchain after all ...

It seems to me that the game should not allow what you do, and I imagine that many more do too, those of us who are really in bronze because of the power of our cards, it is impossible for us to scale positions for that, and I think it is not fair, Even if it is legal, I do not see it fair.

What exactly the game shouldn't allow me to do??? What I'm doing that I shouldn't be doing??? Report bugs and issues, or what???
Please, explain yourself as otherwise I don't see any connection between your comment and the topic of this post!

Don't worry hahaha, it just doesn't seem fair to me that someone has a deck with gold power or higher and can stay in bronze only to be among the best in the bronze rank.

I'm not worried at all as I know I'm not doing anything wrong, but I wanted to know the basis of your reasons for the objections and throwed accusations.
But, it seems to me that you don't understand the game at all!

I know that you actually started playing just a couple of months ago (in June this year - 2021), but I also know that you've logged into the game for the first time back in October 2018th, since when you are more or less regularly following some other active players who are publishing about the game.
So, having the opportunity for almost full 3 years to learn about the game, I would expect that you know and understand at least some essentials about it. But obviously, it's not the case.

Therefore, let me explain.
Having the minimum required power to officially enter some higher playing league (in my case, Silver, or Gold), it doesn't mean to have the cards at such high level to play and compete in those leagues!

In other words, a player can have over a million in power or even more (I have seen a whole bunch of such players) whose power is actually made up of a whole bunch of duplicate cards, but still not enough of them to upgrade them on a higher level. (Some cards requires couple of hundreds of single cards to be upgraded.)

Furthermore, Silver league allow players to use Summoners at the following max. levels.
Common: lvl 5; Rare: lvl 4; Epic: lvl 3; Legendary: lvl 2.
Those Summoners would allow players to use Monster cards, in overall, at the same levels (Common: lvl 5; Rare: lvl 4; Epic: lvl 3; Legendary: lvl 2).

At the same time, Gold league allow players to use Summoners at the following max levels.
Common: lvl 8; Rare: lvl 6; Epic: lvl 5; Legendary: lvl 3.
Those Summoners would allow players to use Monster cards, in overall, at a bit different levels (Common: lvl 8; Rare: lvl 7; Epic: lvl 5; Legendary: lvl 3).

I have only one Summoner (Delwyn Dragonscale on lvl 4) that would be somewhat useful in Silver league, while all the others are on their maximum for the Bronze league, and miles away from the Gold league. And I don't have a single Monster that exceeds Bronze league maximum.

So, give me just one good reason why I shouldn't play in the Bronze league, except your obvious envy and jealousy, or a failed attempt to get rid of the every better performing competitor who built his deck wisely and with the plan through enormous time investment and with its own hard earned money (like I did build mine)!!!

If you don't have it, give me a brake and leave me alone with your baseless, childish and jealousy complains and accusations, and rather invest your time and energy in learning the game properly!

I am aware of what you say, and you are not competition for me, I am simply not at your level, for the simple fact of having much more power, I do not need to insult you to answer you or anything friend, I am not jealous, far from, it It's just not fair, whether you like it or not, I want to get out of bronze to have a better reward of chests, I hope you win a lot of DEC among the first in bronze.

I think that you are wrong. I might be out of your league, but that's certainly not because the amount of power, and you'll figure that out sooner or later if you continue playing. So, the only things according which I might be out of your league are almost full deck of fully upgraded cards for the Bronze league, some playing experience and skill. But, still it doesn't mean I can't loose a battle from you for numerous reasons.

Further more, escaping into a higher league would surely give you more reward chest for your daily quests, but don't be unpleasantly surprised if you'll find in them just whole bunch of potions and couple of DEC here and there.

And last, but not least, if you are not jealous and somewhat angry because of it, you wouldn't leave such a comment under my post as you did, in the first place.
In other words, if you think that something in the game is not fair then I'm certainly not the one to whom you should address that.

I believe, it would be way more constructive and beneficiary for all the players, to go directly to game creators/owners and developers and offer the solution for the things that bother you and which you are finding as unfair.

For instance, I'm planning to suggest them to divide, i.e., current Bronze league into three new leagues each of which would have their own leaderboard. The same rule I would apply to higher leagues (Silver, Gold, Diamond, Champion) too. OK, it would most likely split current reward pool of each league, but so what!?!

In my opinion, new players would be more interested to continue playing, and it would be easier for them to gain some better result, higher place on the leaderboard, and at the same time rewarding score. While in the current setting players playing in Bronze III, Silver III, Gold III, Diamond III or even Champion III, hardly can compete for any end of season reward battling for it with those players in Bronze I, Silver I, Gold I, Diamond I or Champion I.

And I would even dare to bet (judging from frustration that radiates from your comments) that you would like such change! Right?!?

this answer, if it seemed more polite to me, thank you.
It's that you get confused hahaha, I'm not frustrated, I just think it's not fair, and regarding the power of the deck, you have more, because you have more variety of cards and better, with the fact of having cards like KRON THE UNDYING in level 1, you are already far superior, that's what I mean.
