STEEMIT: Question of The Day ???

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Come at me, bruh. I dare ya. :D

I hope y'all can read this with a sense of humor. I am just hoping to inspire a dialogue in a fun way.
I was raised to believe that government should be transparent and the people (We the People, if you will) have a right to privacy. So I am wondering why we have no privacy on Steemit --- other than self-censorship? I spoke to a successful developer recently who explained some things about Blockchain, but in the end we both agreed some privacy elements could be implemented here. But should they? What do you think?

If I remember correctly, he explained it would need to be built over the site(?), and then he went into technical details about Facebook's privacy options which made my brain hurt. Then I remembered my place as a little, meaningless, minnow and I ate a whole pizza, donuts, and a peach pie. I love me some pie! :p

NSFW
Is the NSFW option here an example of privacy, where a user is required to click to view that particular content? Asking for a friend. :D

Did any of you even see the movie "Snowden" or..."1984"?!?

IS BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU?

My delusional paranoia aside, I might prefer a private page only viewable by friends (followers). Just like Instagram (or Fakebook) where we can choose who sees our content.

For anyone here that understands or was involved in the building of Steemit, is it possible to have private pages here one day?

It appears to be the number one reason many of the people I have invited will not join or they joined, but haven't used their accounts...yet.

Question for everyone: How many of you wish Steemit offered privacy options? When there is a will. There is a way. Right?

Thinkin' out loud,
@magick323

P.S. HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYBODY! BE AMAZING!!

I would say that if your content is not to share, write somewhere else. I believe STEEMIT is a site like perhaps some other that recognizes that content has an intrinsic value of sorts. For this content to have value it must be interesting, awesome, out of the ordinary, different to some and so on. Heck if I write a small article or comment in the Parichay Times of New Delhi which probably will have zillions of readers if the paper as a large printout and still get a basic salary, why not place it in STEEMIT where the probable value could be the sky as in the “the sky is the limit“ …. . also just thinking out loud

@indepthstory

Good point! I was thinking about newspaper articles before I posted this.

nice keep asking questions I like it...jejejejeje

@indepthstory

Nope! Be transparent. The whole point of steemit is exposure. I'm sure somewhere along the lines they may have a private feature but just be transparent and there's nothing to worry about.

That's what Hitler said! :D

Oh god what have I become!

Haha just being silly. Ever since Instagram I have been wondering why we are all so public about everything. Depending on content, of course.

It's just how the world works I guess.

I understand where you are coming from @magick323 ...But, the whole point of a blockchain, is transparency...That is why the banks have been so slow to adopt blockchain technology...It's because all the transactions can be viewed and questioned...When you mention Facebook, or Instagram, even though your interactions are not public, they sell your personal data to advertisers and other 3rd parties...& don't give you a dime In the process! How are they worth hundreds of billions of dollars, and your signup is free!!! Lol...At least on the Steem blockchain, the tokens are dispersed to the content creators/curators...Now maybe in the future the developers could implement something...But for now, if you don't want anything being recognized for all of time, please don't put it on this blockchain! Lol

Excellent reply. Thank you. I am glad I asked. Lots of great replies!

No problem my friend...& Steem On! :)

I feel as though that route has been taken on plenty of other sites. If you don't want others to see what you say, Then don't post it here, go post it on FB for family and friends. I love that this site is so open. I think it self filters garbage that people would otherwise feel comfortable posting for friends/followers only. I also like having full access to all posts so I can search any topic and find great reads daily. Join steemit and don't post personal info unless you are comfortable doing so. That's my thought any way!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Good points. I was hoping to inspire a dialogue in a fun way. Hope you caught some of the humor in my seriousness haha

I very much did... I guess I need to add more smileys and haja's in my posts because when I reread it after it sounded so much more serious than intended.

You're fine. I am still trying to learn how to write funnier...without the smileys and haha's myself. lmao
It is an art form! @trafalgar is great at doing it.

Hopefully I will get to that point as well! Thanks for refering @trafalgar 's work. I checked out a few posts that were really good!

You will, and you're welcome. Lots of talent here!

I think the one thing that could be made private is a private message system. Other than that, even though being so transparent is kinda scary to me sometimes, I do think that's the whole point of this place. There's always the option to not share too much about yourself and still be involved but if your motive is to earn the big whaley bucks one day then this place wouldn't work so well for that method. Good question! There should be some sort of Steemit suggestion box for this type of thing :D

Thank you for your comment. 😊
@indepthstory posted a great response, to think of this place as a newspaper. Sounds like a good idea.

Is this?
https://steemit.chat I think the direct messages are private, no? Sort of like FB messenger where it's a separate "app" or site in this case.

NYTimes is hidden though. Only ten free previews per month haha

You sir... are correct on all accords. The secret to perpetual motion is George Orwell's corpse constantly rolling over in his grave as we speak. I plan on following you sir!

Thank you. I agree. Orwell must be rolling over --- and doing back flips!
