Ursula Say's It Better Than I Can!

Ursula K Le Guin's speech at National Book Awards: 'Books aren't just commodities'

Social Interaction and Creativity Have Been Turned Into A Commodity

People who are complaining about bid-bots have a right to complain about excessive bidding. There are no rules right now, no regulation. However, this is how our world works. Business, institutions, charities buy advertising to reach a larger audience to earn more profits selling their product, project, or ideology. The company that has the most money to spend on advertising gets a larger viewing audience and wins the top place for the most viewers who might buy what they are selling. Here on Steemit the user is the commodity and who holds the most power (not creativity) wins!

Even though those of use who use bid bots will get a small payout we will also get more viewers when we reach the hot and trending page. People say this isn't what happens in the real world. I disagree, business that buy advertising get payouts as well. More people are aware of their product or ideology and also the support from large corporations that want as many viewers as possible to see their product. So those who have a large viewership garner more than money from advertisers they also have bought influence from large corporations who also influence governments through supporting officials elected to government.

I don't see any difference between buying advertising and using bid-bots, this is a lot more transparent than the multi-account circle jerks going on a small scale where post only make 10 sbd per post with 3 votes but they post 10 articles a day. And a few large accounts make the trending page where a certain account post five times a day and makes 200 to 400 sbd per post with one large account up voting for the majority of the rewards. Also investors with large accounts supporting and influencing what gets noticed here on Steemit even if the posts are from family or friends and the quality of the post is substandard.

I see this throughout our creative world. Everything I look at including science is supported by large and powerful interests that aren't interested in quality or what is good for everyone, they are interested in profit and power.

I don't have an answer how to fix this problem, but if you don't like what's going on, don't spend your money or time on those who are abusing the system. Get together in large groups and form your own ecosystem and build your power to influence. You'll have to play the same game you are hating on right now and that can be dangerous. You will end up turning into what you hate. I have known this for a long time so I opted out of the game. If I don't like what is going on here on Steemit I can leave and or wait until there are systems built that can minimize the game. I am eagerly waiting for that experiment to happen!

Ursula's Speech

To the givers of this beautiful reward, my thanks, from the heart. My family, my agents, my editors, know that my being here is their doing as well as my own, and that the beautiful reward is theirs as much as mine. And I rejoice in accepting it for, and sharing it with, all the writers who’ve been excluded from literature for so long – my fellow authors of fantasy and science fiction, writers of the imagination, who for 50 years have watched the beautiful rewards go to the Hard times are coming, when we’ll be wanting the voices of writers who can see alternatives to how we live now, can see through our fear-stricken society and its obsessive technologies to other ways of being, and even imagine real grounds for hope. We’ll need writers who can remember freedom – poets, visionaries – realists of a larger reality.

Right now, we need writers who know the difference between production of a market commodity and the practice of an art. Developing written material to suit sales strategies in order to maximise corporate profit and advertising revenue is not the same thing as responsible book publishing or authorship.

Yet I see sales departments given control over editorial. I see my own publishers, in a silly panic of ignorance and greed, charging public libraries for an e-book six or seven times more than they charge customers. We just saw a profiteer try to punish a publisher for disobedience, and writers threatened by corporate fatwa. And I see a lot of us, the producers, who write the books and make the books, accepting this – letting commodity profiteers sell us like deodorant, and tell us what to publish, what to write.

Books aren’t just commodities; the profit motive is often in conflict with the aims of art. We live in capitalism, its power seems inescapable – but then, so did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art. Very often in our art, the art of words.

I’ve had a long career as a writer, and a good one, in good company. Here at the end of it, I don’t want to watch American literature get sold down the river. We who live by writing and publishing want and should demand our fair share of the proceeds; but the name of our beautiful reward isn’t profit. Its name is freedom.

I've read several books on branding, I can't remember the authors names right now, it was way back in 2007, one of my red pill books. Oh I remember his name Douglas Rushkoff, I love his books

Thank you @frankbacon, I will check out this video!

One of my favorite songs about fighting the good fight ;-)

damn I thought it was Bruce Willis being quoted.

I don't like that bid bots are being used so much on shit posts. I don't mind when people use bid bots on good quality posts, because it's just a way to get out there on hot and trending pages, but the shit posts don't deserve to be there.

Who is to decide what is shit and what isn't? That's where the trap is hidden for me....Anarchy and free markets aren't without rules, even nature has rules called cause and effect, like this is what you want and this is what you get...hahaha

Cheers reddust! Who is the arbiter of what is spam and what is not? In a decentralized economy any such self righteous individual is a commie.

This censorship is rampant throughout all corporate media and growing as they are challenged by alternative media and other platforms. I hope we win <3

@berniesanders seems to be siding with such commies. Fitting, no?

He confuses me, (the Steemit Bernie) I’m for some kind of regulations, every system has some but we all can not be equal...the Bernie of our political worlds ideology his views leads to, well as we have seen system that parrot this utopian view...poverty, one tier systms and mass death.

Well, this post is definitely not a shit post, haha!

Well that depends on the observer and each of us has different tastes....hahaha ;-)

Great Post! Keep up the great work! :)

cover.gif Nice post... Great work and well done... Keep it up my friend.

You've brought up a lot of great points here. Because bidbots are transparent, we can all have acesss to where the rewards are coming from (which are more of an payment than a positive investment). This is point I've been considering, but one which I feel we all shoudl have access to.

What you say about circle jerking I can totally agree. That type of numerous posts daily with hight upvotes just isn't fair. But what IS fair in life. At least we can see when people use bidbots though...

I remember when I first understood life wasn't fair, it fact it was neutral regarding anything I did, I wasn't bad or good as life flowed by me. I was six years old riding the school bus to school and I realized how small I was compared to the rest of the world and how small our world was to our galaxy. That feeling didn't make me feel isolated, I felt connected to everything but still very small in the scheme of things manifesting and passing away.

When I look at the games played on steemit, especially the trending page and scams I think of kids I knew and played with on the school playground.

So I play a little, just enough to keep positive and do what I love. I use the bid bots but not excessively. Also I post niche articles and art posts. I am never going to be trendy. Thanks for the thoughtful reply @mountainjewe.

I can totally relate to feeling so small yet so connected. Like a stone on rushing waters, tumbling yet part of a greater orchestration...

My dad constantly reminded me of how life isn’t fair. Like you, the concept has been with me a while.

It is all really just a game isn’t it? I see a post we (my partner and I co-run this account) put our hearts and souls into go unnoticed and others which are fairly empty and honestly boring get huge rewards. Meh, it’s just a game eh?!

We don’t play much with bots, but rather the waiting game of creating a quality account, connecting with others and persevering. Thanks for reaching out.

Glad I found you, been enjoying following your account lately. 😃

We shall see how the SMT tokens play out building communities and support. Until then I will follow you. You two seem like a kindred spirt <3

Redddust how you have been, i read your thoughts about the whole game of advertisement, its true, i think whole of the world's business intensely depends on the advertisement, moreover this is one of the biggest market in the world, in steemit its not shocked me, the same situation is everywhere. but in steemit most of the time it becomes suffer for us, as to use the advertisement option, i used to many time, and just got more losses.
I'm glad to know that you are professionally a writer, its an honor for me to be a part of your contribution, am not a part of any journal but your thoughts are impulsive to realize the actual situation, i think its going to be a good way to comprehend the other.
Thanks for your contribution, its very intellectual and informative to understand the ongoing situation.
Steem On...

I agree the advertising market is huge and it will grow here on steemit as well. I am not a professional writer. I struggle along with you all trying to make sense of this world using words. Words are so limiting and so is my conditioning.

We can try to understand the world together from different points of view. The more points of view the more comprehensive the our world view will be.

You are right Reddust, your intention is above the sky....

I saw the word Ursula Ki Lee Guin when she received the National Book Award in 2014
A word that needs to be considered to reconsider this case was speaking with great difficulty
Books are not just goods
We will have difficult times waiting for us, when we want the voices of writers who can see alternatives to our way of life today, and we can see through our fearful society and obsession with technology new ways of living and even imagine real reasons for hope.

Yeah its true im agree with keep it up dear @reddust

grea work my bro @reddust .

Quality is so much more important than the almighty dollar. Unfortunately everything goes back to money. How do we deal with this. Do we strike a balance? I do not know. But quality must be preserved and not compromised for greed. Thanks @reddust.

Personally I donot like bots voting. in my idealogy, human voting with little reward is better than big bot votes. But at the same time it is true you can't earn big if you don't use bot votes. There should be some laws of bot voting.

You put it best when you said how it is exactly how the world goes with no regulation. Also its the same that how people here are trying to figure out how to regulate it all with little success seemingly.
