December 1st : 121

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

December 1st is also known as 121!

I'm bringing tradition back and if you're too young to know what this is don't worry, I'll explain it to you.

In ancient times before Christianity there was a religion we now call Mithraism and no joke I believe that this is likely the root of the word Myth. It's also the fount from which most of Christian tradition springs forth.

The word December comes to us from the Latin word for ten, December was the 10th month in those days, not the 12th.

December has traditionally been the close of the year for all practical purposes.
At the close of a fiscal year, the roman numeral X was struck into the record.
This signified a crossing out or cancelling, or completion.
This is also why corporate accounting years close in October which is now the 10th month.
It had to do with a tradition of a young man jumping a bull (Saturn's transit of Taurus), which signified the end of danger or debt.

This has led to a tradition we now call "absolution".

The first day of December was sacred in the calendar of the Mithraist because it marked the last day to settle old scores, or old accounts before they were no longer collectible. This spilled forth into roman life and when Mithraism was subsumed into Christianity, this practice was changed into a tradition of "gift giving" and the ancient Christians decided to move the date to the start of Saturnalia, replacing Saturnalia with Christmas and New Years in the process.

But Saturnalia is a topic for another day.

This tradition of putting an X on whatever you settled your debt with, has in fact carried over and is one of many reasons why X-Mas is probably a more appropriate term for December 25th than Christmas. As an aside Christ wasn't born on December 25th, if he were, those poor little ewe lambs the shepherds were tending would have frozen to death. Ok so that's another story for a different day.

Tomorrow is December 1st. We're going to update this tradition and with your help we're going to bring it back and make it a defacto Holiday for the entire Internet!

This is about settling debts, scores, arguments etc.

We have a "reality bubble" problem here in Reality 2.0.

The entire internet is turning into an echo chamber with the most bizarre and exotic claims being regurgitated as facts and critical thinking skills appear to have gone out the window.

To celebrate 121 you should find someone who has bothered or offended you, comment politely to start a discourse in their latest thread and resteem it and share it on social media. Give them the exposure you can and bury old hatchets without burying them in eachother's heads.

Use #one2one when you tweet it.

Alternatively, do a name nameinlights for someone who has been following you and maybe even someone who is saying things you don't agree with. At least acknowledge the person and try to make a new friend or strengthen an existing friendship that may have been strained during the year. Flip everything you think about them on it's head and find something good in the person and call that out. If possible find your nemesis, look deep and try to find the friend hiding inside.

Why?
Because the faceback loop and groupthink tribes on the internet have gotten so loud we completely missed this which will also be celebrated December 1st.
one2one will break the bots that are causing all this noise, so it doesn't happen in the future.
So perhaps also consider sharing this post, even if you don't agree with everything I'm saying.

Interesting read and terminology to ponder on... Thank and namaste :)

You're very welcome and I hope you and everyone else takes this to heart.

A very interesting post, and I also read the linked article, and this is a really serious threat to freedom on the internet, and even human rights. I hope you will make a post about that as well.

I will, but it depends on how this is received, make sure to share. Thanks!

I find it interesting to look at where traditions and words come from.

You may want to look closer in this case. ;) I'm demonstrating something important.
Thank you for reading and giving it some thought though!

A very interesting read :)

Thanks Karenb54! It means a lot!
Make sure to follow the links as you read and also follow up on my citations, they're there to give you even more information.

Here in the UK our Government have just pushed in a law where they can look at our online history if they want to. There's no privacy anymore

Good thoughts and good post!

Thank you very much!

Faceback or Facebook? In any case, yes, the fake news and groupthink tribes pose a real danger to our society. I have tried to avoid all of the hate politicking that's been going on as I think it actually distracts us from the truth of what's happening. The Dakota issue was swept under the rug for the first few weeks and only lately has the media showed up to cover the story--I read more about the Dakota protest from the Canadian and UK media than I did from reading the US papers.

Faceback or Facebook?

It's an intentional turn of phrase. Facebook Feedback = Faceback :) We're all caught in a feeback loop with it's roots in social media and AI autocuration of our media streams and our search results. Hence it's a "faceback loop". Maybe I'm trying to be too cute, but if the latest couple on twitter to ship can become a new word, then I can invent new words too! ;)

Agreed bout the media though. The lack of media coverage for North Dakota is unsettling.

Makes sense for the 10th month that it has "Dec" then.:-)

Upvoted and resteemed!!!!
