The Act of BULLYING

Source

Bullying refers to the physical or psychological abuse that a child, or even an adult, receives continuously at the hands of another person. This phenomenon is not new, it has been existent for a very long time, both inside and outside the confines of the school. Now, however, the concept of bullying has taken off. This has resulted to the rise of news being reported about minors committing suicides.

The BULLY or ABUSER, resorts to this type of violent behavior in order to subdue children and ultimately frighten them. They do this in order for them to GET, OBTAIN or even DESTROY something from the victim, forcing them into submission. Another reason would be to just simply satisfy their need to attack and inflict hurt on their victims.

The consequences of the harassment, go from the social abstraction of the victim, development of fear and rejection, and in worse cases, even lead to SUICIDE.

Now, more than ever, this phenomenon has intensified and has gained public connotation that schools and institutions must actively intervene to avoid from happening.

The FOLLOWING are means in which these institutions can INTERVENE with:

• Awareness campaigns raising the negativity that is brought by the act of bullying.

• Carrying out group activities where inclusion and fellowship are highly encouraged.

• Promoting the value of respect as a tool for coexistence.

• Strengthening sanctions in schools or other institutions to condemn this behavior.

• Create an alliance with parents to combat the development of “bullying”, both inside and outside the school premises.
