@steemed: Hello!
I: How did you get to know about Steemit?
Steemed:
I am an early miner--one of the earliest of the early, easily the first outsider. In fact, I mined STEEM before the infamous relaunch that marks the accepted beginning of the Steem blockchain.
I: You have a bot, right? How many and name(s)?
S:
I have 3 accounts in my bot and they vote together. The accounts are steemed, itsascam, and steemroller. Any of the 3 would be considered a "whale" account.
I: What convinced you that setting up a bot was the best thing for the platform?
S:
First, let me start by saying that I feel like the Steem platform is going to succeed wildly whether I have a bot or not.
From my perspective, my bot serves the purpose of executing salary distribution to my author list. It will probably be hard to convince skeptics of this, but my bots are great for content producers and are therefore good for Steem. My author list is curated by reading content. In that way my bots are intelligent.
I: A lot of Steemians especially newbies have some not too nice opinions about bots. Are they right to think so?
S:
They are not right to think that bots are inherently bad, any more than any other tool is inherently bad. Newbies, and even some vets, often do not fully grasp the dynamics of technology, which causes misunderstanding and distrust.
My bot votes at the 15 minute mark, giving the authors in my list 1/2 of my curation rewards. Other bot owners and even manual voters early-vote me because they know the exact time my bots will vote. When they early-vote me they take some of my curation rewards as well. This all works to the authors' favor, which is the purpose of advertising when my bot votes--I want the early voters. The more people who early-vote me for guaranteed curation rewards, the more the authors in my list make (and the less I make, incidentally). I'm happy for the authors that I have this tidal wave effect.
I'm here for content providers. I like hearing about their successful struggles with adversity, and in somewhat selfish service to my ego, I like to think that my support helps improve their lives. Creative people are by nature slaves to their creativity, and it is important for those who can have an impact to be cognizant of the stresses that unrestrained creativity imposes on artists and authors.
I: Whats a typical day for you as regards your bot(s)?
S:
I check several times a day that my bot is working for my author list. I respond to PMs from authors who would like to be added to my bots. I interact with willing authors on what kind of content might improve their followings. Several times a day, I look to see what my bot has voted on and see if there is any good material to read. I also check to make sure my author list is contributing what I call "substantive content". If they make trivial posts, I bring it up and try to persuade them to publish more substance from the accounts on which I vote. I respond to authors who notice where my bot misses their posts because of things like network latency. I do some manual voting to compensate for these gaps.
I: Personally, as a whale, what do you look for in contents before upvoting?
S:
I look for that personal touch, a potential for serious creativity, post cohesiveness, and reading times in the 3+ minute range. I am especially moved by those who relate their experiences and how those experiences manifest in their creativity. I like to understand how others find the motivation to create things much more inspired than I can, I guess in the vain Walter Mitty-like hope that I could some day match their creative achievements.
I look at authors before including them in my bot and read posts after my bot votes for them. I take reviewing posts very seriously.
Obviously, this backwards chronology of voting then reviewing seems contradictory to traditional curation, but I don't see anything wrong with it. I believe that reading each post before voting on it would be micro-management. In a sense, I am a job creator, vested with the power to appropriate income derived from the block chain reward fund. I acquired this power when I committed resources to mining while the developers were unknown and the project's legitimacy was entirely suspect. In short, I took significant risks and gained rewards consummate with those risks.
I tried to convince many people to mine STEEM in the early stages and most did not want to take the risk. If I would have tried to convince any of those who are now jealous of my holdings to take a risk and mine, they probably would have laughed at me. I could be wrong, but I like to think that the skeptics who don't understand risk and reward, who tend to mock new technology, and who succumb to fear and doubt, tend to be the most jealous and resentful critics later.
I: Apart from steemit, do you have any other life interests? Like hobbies?
S:
I have all sorts of hobbies. Like the authors I support with my voting bots, I am a creative type. I have no musical training, but if within reaching distance of an instrument, I will pick it up and begin composing a song on it, although admittedly my talent limits me to composing only simple songs. I will compulsively repeat the same thing many times until each note sounds most pleasing to me. I've played many sports, in which I always have a competitive attitude, even if deleterious to my physical well being. I have a moderately compulsive personality that drives me to take interest in new things without much attenuation. These compulsions have led to all sorts of struggles as well as successes.
I: Where do you see Steemit in the next 12 months?
S:
I see absurdly high rates of adoption, a series of significant, but not insurmountable, technical challenges resulting from this growth, and a market capitalization of the STEEM cryptocurrency that will turn heads and invite droves of jealous critics (although no one should take what I say as investment advice--it could crash to nothing as well). Even the tiniest of our current minnows might be the focus of jealousy for being early adopters of this technology. In a way, expanding my peer group of "evil whales" will be what I most anticipate. I look forward to bonding with them and sharing our complaints about those who disapprove of our whale status.
I: Your personal message to all Steemians?
S:
You are fortunate to have an open mind and to embrace Steem. Make the most of it and post a lot. This is your ticket to a little STEEM now, which may become a lot of STEEM later.
For the Steem skeptics, not everything that appears to be negative at first glance is what it seems. Don't give into negative group think. Lots of fortunes will be made with Steem. See what you can do with the technology. It is part of a greater technological revolution that has the potential to improve the human condition. Most importantly, fear and skepticism of new technology and jealousy of its beneficiaries now will make you resentful later. Why not just use the technology to make your life and the lives of others better?

This, @steemed was so well expressed. I had no idea, and so I must really thank @infovore for opening up this knowledge. This was incredibly fascinating and I had no idea you really cared so much about passing on wealth. I too, want to pass on wealth, although I'm not a whale......just a fatty dolphin now. I really appreciated learning about your perspective.
Hey... I dig it... As you will soon find out ... I will hopefully be finding more time to invest into this site and its success. This is coming from a serious skeptic. More noted a cyber skeptic. As to respect the space of the author who posted this and the whale he interviewed I won't go off on reasons behind any of my beliefs about my cyber skepticism. If you start to follow me you will find some serious reasons I am interested in Steemit. I think.....No I know it's all to easy to want to hate something one is not familiar with or can't (yet) see the reasons behind the foundation someone or something. Been there , On Both Ends.
I don't know what it is about Steemit but I feel like we have all stumbled upon something ... Possibly more good then we know( soon to see). I think any support from directions we may not be familiar with should be viewed at with an open mind. Just the same as when you first came to know about this forum. It's just NOW taught me to have a more open mind about bots. Just from this post alone. As you will find in my upcoming posts, you'll find a baseline of Family.... Or what I hope to have found to be a ' Family' of sorts. Made up of like minded individuals such as YOU.... It seems to be a break in the clouds of something we have all been looking for or so I assume. A group of people helping one another rise up. To become more and to,help recognize our and others potential. Help them become more confident and more empowered, in which ever way it may be done. Not to push others down....step on others so it can make one appear higher up and more falsely immortalized by using others as their step stool to their own success.... For that.... I now have opened up to the idea of something I once ...., possibly blindly , looked down upon and was closed of to. If The Whale wants to breathe some fresh air our way and juice up our success ..... Then Bring On The Bot...... Maby I'm right. Maby I'm wrong.... I m voting I'm right ..... Yea man, of course. Thanks for the post. Solid way ta crank out some good info. I got here because of an out of the ordinary approach to a pretty damn important everyday event ..... Trying to make 'money' (that little something I can't seem to get despite the insane work I put into getting it💫) ...and at the same time figure a way to make this crazy ass amazing world we live in a better place. Not~fiat crypto currency. Take the power out from the small percent (not completely but almost completely :} ) of those using the majority as a stepping stool, pushing everyone else down to help only them rise to the top. Shit we all know though the cream always rises to the top. It may take some time but it always does!!

I needed some deprograming & rewiring . Through getting into the crypto I stumbled upon Steemit. Weary at first but quickly opening up to it due to its crypto baseline I saw an actual break in the clouds. People with good info. Nonfictional useful info. I was always not down with BOTS because of when I used to play shit tons of online poker for a second job. Those Suckers did just that .....SUUUCKED all your $$$$ out of all your hard work. So 'BOT' was a bad 4 letter word in the Online poker word... Ya just couldn't see the fourth letter but that little shit was hiding somewhere taking taking taking.
This post was literally the first info I saw good in BOTs. A different angle of lookin at something. Like everything in life, some are Good and some are Bad. So thank you, @infovore !
I find myself rambling in replys to others posts to help them out. I need to spend time posting shit of my own, especially since I all of a sudden became broke as a joke.... I am on a bot's author list and it has helped me immensely, which then helps others who vote on my stuff. And then I help spread a little finacial love around. I am definitely pro-bot and this helped me understand how it works.

This is a fantastic peice ! Thank you very much. "Absurdly high adoption rates". I agree and have told many people to just create and account and have fun, without worrying about the money. I said they might be very surprised in a year. We will see! The point the whale makes about 3+ min. reads, is great, but I am a man of few words. Most of my content such as cigar reviews are pretty simple and to the point. However I love this and continue to buy steem for steempower.

I wouldn't care too much about these bots. If these bots ignore everyone except a few friends of the whales, then the project will fail because people will not keep posting content here if there is nothing to be gained.
I can't really see how this is helping new people on steem, now the bots already have a list on which they vote now untill and unless a new author pm the whale the bots will never be able to see the content of the new author. So it make a closed system where particular bots upvote particular author which in turn make new author a little disinterested in the platform as they see only a particular set of author's content always voted high.
new members need to come up with their own creative business ideas. I have lots of ideas to share.....
@steemed a good bot for the community would be one that upvotes posts as they start trending. amplifying their rewards. therefore not interfering in the popular process of determining what should be trending or not.
at the moment your bots single-handedly can make a post a "trending" one (shouldn't even be called "trending" but "whale selected content").
predetermining trending posts by a whale bot List IMO is not a good idea. will disenfranchise the vast majority of users who is not on the List and make them feel it is a rigged system. you say you're trying to do what's best for steem but the @linda episode raises doubts . also you pretend not to understand how people are self censoring and posting to appease you to have a coin thrown at them. this feudal system is hardly ideal.
I think for the bots dilemma in a decentralized community a voting system (through witnesses) could determine which bots are benign and which are nefarious. I think some bots have already been neutralized.

@infovore Great Post and the steemmag is a wonderful idea :) I followed you and hope to see many more articles. I have a question for @steemed . First of all congratulations on the vision of mining steem in the early days. I am glad it paid off for you. I am a business man myself and risk and reward is what it is all about. One of the reasons of being on Steeemit is to get to the point where I can use Steemit as a revenue generating mechanism, to replace my current salary and focus on my business on a more full time basis. My question is how does one get on your author list? I am still fairly new to Steemit and only made a round 10 posts. I am a colleague of @gavvet, who is on your author list. He is a great guy and I always read his posts, but more importantly he is really assisting to build the community. He recently started promoting authors and I was lucky enough that some of the posts that he made for me made a few dollars. Can I please ask that you read some of my posts and if you believe there is potential to add me to your author list?

many of our slack accounts were hacked by the hackers who stole our funds. Slack is not secure. I think that's related to it.
I thinks it was temp closed for security reasons. I gather the devs are working to produce a more robust messaging system.

You're right. There is, indeed, an audience for every tag on Steemit. It might seem small at first but eventually the number of views would increase as proper tagging is implemented.

I at first thought the same as I always have about bots. Scroll up & read through my replies. Tell me if you feel where I'm comin from. Let me know if I hit any chords on this topic. I'm not asking you to do this btw just for up votes or even only straight positive feed back. I'm curious as to if this post may me viewed the same as I viewed it. If not give me some feedback cuz I though of all bots as a full on break in the chain in any good the cyber world gives us.... Then I read @infovore 's post here and may have changed it up for me. That's huge seeing as I know I lost unspeakable amounts of invested time and $ to them in the poker world.

I saw a post from steemed before, and just like Bernie Sanders, he is one of the reasons that steemit is great, they're active and upvote quality content. I could say more names that makes steemit great, but we also cant exclude all the content creators that we have in here, so im not listing any more people. And nice interview, cleared me up with some questions i had about him.

At least hes voting at the 15 minute mark. Which does split the rewards, but it still isnt good that hes ignoring good content because a bot just randomly picks it.
It's not random. I vote on every post any author in my author list makes, except where the bot misses the post because of network latency or other technical glitches.
It is very much like an employee/employer relationship. In a good relationship, the employer (roughly equivalent to myself) trusts that the employee (roughly equivalent to the author) will produce good work. I simply do not feel the need to approve all posts of the people in my author list before they post.
If this were a news magazine or other publication where the relationship is a little different (say, where I'm the editor), I'd probably do it a different way. But I have no interest in imposing my approval on everything an author produces.

I agree with what you are saying completely steemed.
You are putting your trust in a number of authors that you believe will generate interesting and popular content. That supports the creators and the community! The question I was wondering was what language you decided to build you bots in? Bots can have a positive effect on the steemit community and I think people can overlook this.

@steemed I don't know if that makes it right though. I don't think it is in keeping with the spirit of Steemit (but I suppose that is up to everyone's interpretation). I personally don't agree with it though. If you want to launch a magazine or publication with your own writers and be the editor you can do that.
What you are describing will (and I don't think I'm the only one who will see it that way) be seen as manipulating the system.
Also I suspect most people won't tell you like it is anyway or be honest with you. - They would rather suck your balls since you are a whale.

I think you need to look up the meaning of hostility. I'm being honest and giving my opinion. Like I said and as you will see everyone else here will suck up to you. I won't. If you think that is hostile then you have some things to learn about life.
Edit: People sucking up to you are not friends. They are doing it because they want something. It's one of the downsides of being wealthy in real life and it works on here too.
I think you missed the part where I said the relationship is somewhat like employee-employer. I suspect you have never been an employee or employer and don't understand that such a relationship is based on professionalism and not friendship first and foremost.
Also I believe that it is hostile to characterize a professional relationship in the vulgar way that you have. Characterizing it that way will do little to sway others to your way of thinking, nor will it make me feel "bad" about anything I do. The internet is full of trolls, and I have become quite used to rhetoric like yours. I guess it's time for you to escalate with more vulgarity, so be my guest...

@steemed I agree that is a problem. Those with the most voting power probably don't have as much time to review posts but another way of looking at would be to say that it reduces the net effect of whales on the system. On the other hand like you suggest it could slow down distribution.
Anyway I don't see an easy solution so whilst I don't agree with the use of bots I can sympathise with why you do it.
I'm talking about people on Steemit not speaking their minds about the use of voting bots. People won't speak their minds about it on HERE in this post because they don't want to piss people like you off and lose the chance of you "hiring" them as you call it. That is ALL I was referring to.
I perhaps wasn't clear enough in expressing that. Also I'm not trying to make you feel bad about anything.
I was just pointing out what seemed to be the spirit of Steemit i.e. that people read a post and then vote on it as opposed to a bot up-voting it and you reading it later.
It seems like an unreasonable self-imposed constraint. I try to avoid those because they limit what you can achieve.
Another thing that everyone selectively overlooks is that automated voting allows better distribution of rewards because I can make more votes. If I vote on 2-3 posts per day there will be fewer and bigger winners.

each of us has our jobs here in Steemit. Everyone is free to create a bot, create a film, a piece of art, a magazine, a service, whatever. As long as it is not harming anyone, there's space to do whatever one wishes. He's doing what he wants and is creating "employees" out of creative people. He's doing nothing wrong, and everything right, because he's exercizing free will and initiative.

Ok that makes more sense. I don't totally agree but you have the right to do so and I do respect you for being transparent about it.
So, as writers, we just need a funtionality in the steemit web page to send curriculum vitae to you, the employer.

Nice to get some insight on what makes a whale tick, and there take on the future. I find it interesting that in most interviews there is always an ultimatum for Steemits success. It is a good thing to always have the element of doubt, it keeps our alert system in check.

Don't attempt to think of tools like bots as "good" or "bad". They are tools, like a hammer, pencil, vacuum cleaner, blender, car, ...

Bots, just like other tools, can be used to do "good" things. In those cases the bot is good. The corollary of that suggests that they can be "bad" as well. So a bot in an inactive position is neutral, but once it's implementation shows itself to be good/bad it has become good/bad.
I don't have an issue with your bots upvoting the authors you have chosen to support, just so we're clear.
So they can be used for good or for bad. Or they can be used correctly or incorrectly. People get hurt by using a knife incorrectly, not because the knife is sharp?

I started out reading the interview as satire (perhaps this speaks more to my own views on bots and the structure of rewards) and was amazed that it wasn't. I am even more concerned for this social media ecosystem than before.

I dont think anyone should use bots over here,and it is not right as "whale" said- they are not good for steemit,because they take away profits from the other people,who are small over here,which are doing hardwork to get 0,01$ lol...
