Mystery Star Wars Coins in my collection?!?!?

in #steemsilvergold6 years ago

So I'm a huge Star Wars fan, that's likely obvious and also a huge coin collector. Before I had a wife and kids, I had a lot more money to just buy everything I saw and didn't actually know much... lol.

Ahhh... to be young and dumb, will only disposable income again.. but alas, not the point today.

My point is I bought these coins. With no research or no looking around and likely for too much.

When I got them they looked a bit off, albeit still really cool, but kinda off. Things didn't really seem to add up. There in the display case, but no COAs no inserts of any kind. No year no facevalue, none of it seams to make much sense.

So I decided to go looking, I couldn't find any reference to them anywhere online. No other ones for sale or being displayed anywhere.

I've always just resigned myself to the fact they are likely not actually licensed or from the Cook Islands. They are also likely valueless, but still I don't really care.

They are likely rare and still pretty cool in my mind!

Here's some better photos of them all.

Those are effin sweet!

I love Star Wars . I've watched every Star Wars movie they made several times. I don't think I'll ever get sick of them. Star Wars was the first movie I ever saw in a theatre. I went with one of my friends for his birthday when we were kids.

If someone tried to sell me those I probably would not buy them. All of the things you mentioned that made you suspicious make me suspicious as well. I suspect that those coins may only be valuable to the person who buys them.

The fact that they have something to do with Star Wars changes everything though. They could be worth thousands or they could be worth nothing. You'd need some kind of Star Wars memorabilia expert to look at them like they have on Pawn Stars. I'm certainly not an expert.

Thanks for sharing though. It's always good to see some new coins.

They look a bit dodgy, but hey, it's Star Wars = Nostalgia!
Like the Rick and Morty bit about the R2D2 coins...

"It has value to you, that's what matter."

there are some islands in the Pacific where coins of that style are worth money XD

Have you shown this to @bonniepiesse ?

Awesome. I get that the value in most coins is the monetary value. But sometimes awesome carries its own value. :)

Being a big Star Wars fan I was curious so I tried searching too. No better lucky than you. I did learn that all kinds of crazy coins come out of the Cook Islands though. I agree that these don't really look right. No date, doesn't look like there is a space between "Cook" and "Islands" which is kind of weird. Also the word "Commemoration" there without some kind of reference to what is actually being commemorated seems strange too. And most of the examples of coins I've seen that are painted are only partially so and it is highlighting a design that's actually minted into the coin. Still kind of interesting to have though. Fakes or not you would think there would be more examples of them out there.

These are not technically coins because there is no value assigned nor date. Might be a private mint edition in the name of an island. They are beautiful.

I wonder if they came from the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum Star Wars gift shop, when they had the Star Wars exhibit there in the 90s during the special edition theater releases? Looks similar to some things I saw there when I was young.

I think they are cool!
