The Third Act

in #storylast month (edited)

Here I am
entering my third act
in much the same way
the second one began,

Keeping my eyes open
for synchronicity,
seeking out moments of joy
scattered amongst
the mounting losses,
and melancholy, lingering.

By now I know
the glint of them
will turn up
in the least likely of places
if I’m aware enough
to notice them,

Our time on this rock
truly is but a blink and, yes,
we realize it far too late
but at this point that’s cliché.

Those who’d like you to believe
they have it all figured out
will always tell you to “walk this way”
and will easily deceive
those starving for all the answers.

I say:
stay hungry but
don’t swallow whole.
stay curious but
don’t grieve for what time stole.

Let all your questions ride shotgun,
windows down, radio low,
chasing the sunset on
this same old, uncertain road.

It’s not just about
the blessings and the sins
or how the losses stack up
against the wins or
even what shape we’re in,

None of that matters.

In the end it’s the little moments—
a stranger’s laugh
at the coffee counter,
acts of kindness,
fireflies lighting up the dark,
rain against the window,
the sudden scent of lilac,
the warmth of another spring
reminding me I’m still here.

In this third act
I’m growing more weary
but I keep walking,
not because someone pointed,
but because joy and curiosity
draw me close.

The curtain, it will fall only once,
so until that moment,
I will keep connecting the dots,
collecting these joyous moments
until they add up to something
brighter than certainty ever could.

Man that is some heavy and introspective stuff I can relate to! Since I have been having a blast creating tunes lately, I found myself wondering what this would sound like in song format with the feelings it gave me as prompts.

Not sure if you will enjoy this or not but here is a dark folk duet in the style of ~EVW~!

That's amazing, @zekepickleman! Crazy how well that works. I never imagined a short poem could result in a song of that length. I think I'll have to explore trying that with more of my poetry. I have about 600 of them now. Thanks for sharing this!

Ya man!

Hit suno.com and login with your gmail/google account and the free version is great.

Use https://gemini.google.com/ to come up with suno prompts for the style of music you want it to be. I used "Suno prompt for Leonard Cohen" after reading the tone of your poem.

Lemme know if you need help!

Thanks for that info! I tried my first one and I must say I'm impressed! https://suno.com/s/gm41Vz3U7s368HZb

How do you do that??? Oh my heavens. I loved it. Going to YouTube now to share it.

Haha the crew has been having fun making tunes about each other. I should make one about Hive.

I think the idea that joy can be found in unexpected places encourages us all to look deeper into our daily lives :)

I feel like my next act is right around the corner. How many are there total though? :) I was down in Ohio this past weekend celebrating my sister in law's fiftieth.

When I was writing this I was thinking about how life was like a three act play. Oh nice! 50 is a milestone, for sure.

Oh, well give yourself a bit more time than that! Unless the final act is longer than the first two!

I'm hoping to squeeze at least thirty years out of this third act. : )

That's better!

I began to copy some of the more striking lines, and then I stopped, because there are so many.

The poem was meaningful when I read it. Then I listened to @zekepickleman's song. The phrasing highlighted the significance of the piece.

Really a wonderful 'collaboration' :)

Thanks @agmoore! I was so surprised when I first listened to the song Zeke created! I had never heard of the Suno platform before. Over the past couple of days I've joined and created a couple more songs from a few of my old poems—I think I'll post about it today. It's really incredible and gives the poetry a whole new dimension.

Nailed it.

Honestly, there's even more joy in this act because we DO treasure it for understanding we only have a few years left to enjoy it. We understand more about what matters. Some days my heart explodes with it. Joy bubbles, popping everywhere. Fucking hell, I want all the joy bubbles before it's too late!!!

Thanks. That's exactly right, @riverflows. I find myself in a state of gratitude pretty often at this stage of life. Cheers to Joy Bubbles! : )

We all don't know how long our lives will last, so the best and wisest people are those who are enjoying every moment of their lives. Just as we see you, you have been living your life beautifully and enjoying it for a long time by doing what you love. This also improves your inner health.

So true, none of us know how long we have left! It's best to enjoy every moment to the fullest!
