One of the thing frequently asked by newbies during our workshops / meetups is how steemit censors porn and offensive materials on its platform. This is because there are also young kids which do use steemit and it would be deemed not appropriate for them to accidentally stumble across images which may haunt their brains forever.
Steemit 's way of self controlling censorship is for the author to tag the post as NSFW
WHAT ON EARTH IS NSFW ?????
Its short form for Not Safe For Work , but what does it really meant ?
NSFW is a very special tag for bloggers who would are planning to write their blogs that includes :-
- Nudity
- Sex
- Something not safe for kids to look at
- Something offensive for the general public
How do I use this ?
When you write a post which includes any of the things above and do not want to get flagged for it make sure in your tags you would include NSFW as one of your five tags. What happens once you publish your post , your post would be there however you would need to click REVEAL THIS POST before you can see it.
Why even use NSFW
I've come across several steemians who does amazing photography and also digital art which consist of a lot of nudity or offensive to the general public. They have problems showing off their work on other social media as it would be reported and taken down almost immediately.
On steemit , they can freely publish their work and tag it as NSFW where it tells all steemians that these posts are of such nature.
I am an adult ! CAN I TURN OFF THIS NSFW FILTER ?
If these NSFW posts does not bother you at all , you are able to turn it off by clicking on your profile --> settings. Scroll Down and you will then see these options :-
How do i see all these NSFW posts for "research" purposes ?
Like any other tags , you can see these posts by :-
- For new posts http://steemit.com/created/nsfw
- For Hot posts http://steemit.com/hot/nsfw
- For Trending posts http://created/trending/nsfw
Summary
The next time you are just about to post something which is hot and sex or just plain gruesome and offensive to the general public, do make sure you tag it with NSFW .

Most wanted, but most illegal, LOL
Very good explanation. Resteemed for my followers.
Lately I have been seeing more nsfw posts than before.
Not sure why, perhaps because I have been following more people. But now I see one of those posts every 2 days at least

This is where the coming "community" feature will be really handy for those NSFW posts.
Do I need to use "NSFW" as the first tag or just one of them? Thank you for your knowledge! The more we know, the better we can make this wonderful community.
U can use it in any of the tags
Thank you. I was under the assumption that it had to be the first tag as that is the category your post is listed under. Maybe I am wrong on that assumption. Thank you again :)
Oh..now I know..lol..thanks for the info..
