Isn't it just amazing how technology allows us to communicate?

A few years ago it was very difficult to communicate with people when you are traveling in a different country, and it is becoming easier by the day.

I am sure we have all used Google translate at some point. Be it to reply to somebody's comment in Steemit or for a more detailed translation of a business document. Maybe you used it to ask somebody for something in a different country. Sure it is not 100% correct but you can at least communicate with somebody.

Here is the translation for the above paragraph using Google translate:

In Malay

Saya pasti kita semua telah menggunakan Google menerjemahkan pada satu ketika. Sama ada untuk membalas komen seseorang dalam Steemit atau untuk terjemahan yang lebih terperinci mengenai dokumen perniagaan. Mungkin anda menggunakannya untuk meminta seseorang untuk sesuatu di negara yang berbeza. Pasti ia tidak 100% betul tetapi anda sekurang-kurangnya dapat berkomunikasi dengan seseorang.

In Afrikaans

My first language is Afrikaans, so I can tell you that the translation is pretty good, but with some minor errors. It is however totally acceptable if you now the person is trying to communicate in your language.

Ek is seker dat ons op een of ander tyd Google vertaal het. Dit is om te antwoord op iemand se kommentaar in Steemit of vir 'n meer gedetailleerde vertaling van 'n sakedokument. Miskien het jy dit gebruik om iemand te vra vir iets in 'n ander land. Seker dit is nie 100% korrek nie, maar jy kan ten minste met iemand kommunikeer.

Then you have some electronic text to speech translators.

Electronic Text to Speech translators

I found a list of the Top 10 Electronic Text to speech Translators. I have not used any of these, but I am sure that it should be very similar to the Google translate results, with the difference that you might sound like Stephen Hawkings :)

Well, what if I tell you there is now an app that can teach you a different language in 3 weeks. Yes you heard me correctly. Learn a new language in 3 weeks. Should we not put a challenge out there to see how it works?

Babbel

I have not used this app, but I am very interested in using it to see if it actually works. I found the following extract from the Babbel website:

We asked 15 of our hardest working Babbelonians to learn Spanish with Babbel for 3 weeks. None were expert learners, and few had much free time to dedicate to language learning. So how did they do?

This can be a seriously exciting challenge if you are like me who love to learn. I am definitely not a languages person and can only speak two languages. There are however many people in our country that know at least 3 or 4 languages due to the various tribes that live in our country.

I guess there is only one thing to do. Download the app and see what it is all about. Who is up for a challenge to learn another language?

Happy Steeming!

Nice! I wanted to learn other language many years ago but it was expensive! You provide a good way for us!

Hello @jacor.
I truly believe in what you have tried to convey though your post. We indeed are living in an era of connected world. 📱📲☎️📞📠📨
I come from India and here our ancestors always believed in the philosophy that read "vasudev kutumbakam", which means "the world is one family". And hence what we are being able to do today was something that our ancestors always wanted to achieve...
Talking about getting the opportunity to speak to people from different cultures, beliefs, ethnicities & languages with the help of modern day science and technology isn't lesser than a miracle by any means.

P.S. Please visit my account @vinyprop and follow me if you feel it's worth it. ☺️ thanks

Language is no longer a barrier to communicate with people from different cultures and communities, technology is playing a big role in uniting and bringing us together.

Will there be an option for learning Indian languages there ??

I wouldn't usually read these types of posts but I definitely will from now on! I love the way you write & you really know what you're talking about. You've gained a new follower 🙂

amazing

Indeed :)

Hi @jacor

Congratulations! You have been chosen to appear on "Who to Follow Daily". Thank you for adding such value to the Steemit community. Steem on!

Those big phones, even modems wasn't that long ago, technology is amazing, and of course steemit would not be here! Communication is amazing, thanks for posting.

I've heard about this app a lot. I'm also curious if it would work, but I don't have much time on my hands to learn another language. Hopefully someday in the future :)

Very insightfull post, thanks :)

Never did I ever thing international would cover malay! haha Are you Malaysian bro? Just wondering heh! Nice job with the translations. It's true that there are no more barriers whatsoever in the world. Racism shouldn't be a thing anymore and those making it a thing should cut it out because we're moving on from that downhill phase. Cheers! Nice job.

Google Translate is more accurate from about september 2016.
"New version of Google Translate is powered by neural machine translation, which is a new method of teaching computers to translate human languages, according to the Association for Computational Linguistics"

It's insanely amazing how far we came.. seriously not having phones to the Flintstones types of phones now to phones you dont need hands to hold. Everything is advancing to the point of damn we're going to be bots soon lol!!! Great Share..@jacor!

It is very interesting to see how different languages will fare in the coming decades.

As you mention, technologies are evolving fast, making it easy to at least dicipher the meaning of a text no matter what language it is written in.

What might be even more interesting is the technological advancements of real time translation devices like Bragi's.

Soon real time speech translation will be so effective that many people will find learning a new language to be too much work when you can in fact just wear a couple of ear buds!

The Babel fish anyone?

Many languages might not survive such technological developments..

By the way jacor, I have a question I would like to ask you. May I contact you on steemit.chat?

ronni

You are exactly right. With google translation, I can read and comments post in steemit that are not English. I usually comment on korean post using google translate. Its amazing how we can connect with anybody who happen to have a different language and understand each other.

Hello Friend Nice Post by You

Please see my post also under the title
"Please Check the POST"

Thank you very much

I think now that we're moving more towards a video format, communication is vastly improving. It was a bit problematic to be mostly operating in text as human context is often lost

Interesting post. Thanks! +1

I am always impressed the number of languages that we speak. They all sound different but they mean the same. I can only speak two languages and would consider exploring others. I wonder if we all become telepathic..communication would be more advanced. haha

hey
what a fantastic post
like!

yea u're right even now I can watch different videos of porn :) vidos everywhere

Some of the best places to learn a new language online are Duolingo and Memrise. However, the latter offers far more options for languages than the other.

Great post keep it buddy

I remember those days with long distance charges, no internet, used a phone book to find people; now all you need is your phone. Technology is making it easier, faster, and funner to interact with friends and family throughout the world. The times are changing quick, and it's beautiful we wouldn't have a platform like steem if we weren't advancing. To learn a language in 3 weeks is incredible though; did you download Babbel is it user friendly? That would be awesome if it works Id want to learn Polish especially. I had a friend of mine that was having fun with some Americans here hsing google translate :D They ended up having a blasr despite the small translation flaws that were popping up here and there.
I did start translating to them once I was there but they managed quite fine before.
Cheers and much love from me

My grandma used to tell me that she didn't believe that a piece of plastic and glass could make people communicate across countries.

Your post @jacor is very good, I love it. Thanks for sharing. I hope your experience becomes knowledge for all of us. I have come and Upvote in your interesting post. And do not forget to follow and upvote do the same to me. Hopefully steemit remains the foremost.

Please see your post mentioned here

This is very true, I use Google translate regularly to translate steemit comments. To me it is just amazing. Thanks for posting.

Technology related to communication is evolving rapidly. Very soon, mankind will achieve Telepathic communication. Quote me

Very interesting post. I look forward to reading more.

I hadn't heard of Babbel, sounds like a great app to learn a new language!

Wouldn't want to sound like this when I take a stab at a new language:

I am less impressed with Google Translate: I am Dutch (lots of similarities with Afrikaans btw!) and it's often hit or miss. Although I understand Google has recently rolled out an update to improve its Dutch translations. So hopefully it'll be more spot on now!

Have you ever tried DuoLingo? I love that app to learn the basics of a new language.

These apps open up an entirely new world! Just downloaded Babbel Spanish... We'll see how it goes. Thx

Geniet die ge - babbel !! Ek is ook nie n taal ou nie en het frans probeer praat vir werk in DRC. Moet se as jy elke dag aan die taal blootgestel word leer n mens dit nogal vinnig praat!
