To be clear, I'm not actually learning to juggle with knives and stuff more a case of learning to juggle all the things I like to do. Juggling knives would be far more impressive but to be honest there would be little of me left for other things if I took that up for a hobby.
So, what have I been up to? Well a little of everything really. I've started to tuck into a few more books, magazines and TV shows. I've been spending a little more time cooking, something I find very therapeutic. Then of course there's spending more time with the kids. That happens mostly over the weekend as I don't get home much before their bed time during the working week. I've also been spending some time studying of an evening.
Building virtual machines with Oracle VirtualBox
I've mentioned before that I used to be a techie many moons ago supporting thousands of users across dozens of servers and networks. I wasn't the best techie ever but I bloody enjoyed it! Somehow I ended up moving into more managerial positions and although I enjoy it, I do miss not getting my hands dirty. I started getting into some Comptia courses when I was job hunting as a refresher as I had applied for some some temp support jobs. Alas I ended up not getting a techie role ... that is until now.
...well sort of.
The company I joined is very small with under two dozen employees. It does however have a small network infrastructure and nobody to manage it so I've managed to pick that up on top of my other responsibilities. Off the back if that I've decided to attempt to get grab some Microsoft Certifications starting with Windows 10 and then onto Server.
I've been a user of PluralSight on and off for a good few years now so have been using that as a starting point for my studies; I also have a few books for a little variety. Training seems to be much more straight forward these days as many of the operating systems are made available for free as a trial or evaluation (for 180 days). That combined with virtualisation tools such as Hyper V, Oracle VirtualBox or VMWare Workstation means one can setup little domain based networks on a reasonably spec'd PC or laptop. 8GB of RAM is enough to get you started when combined with a few 100GB of disk space and a multicore processor.
Technology is a wonderful thing!
You should learn to juggle. It's fun and can be relaxing once you learn. The kids would love it. I need to get back into it.
I'm really not up on all the latest technology. What we do at work is fairly specialist and some of it uses old stuff. I don't get to do much in the way of formal training, but I do enjoy learning. I did a few Coursera courses a while back on programming as well as some on music.
