Timelapse of a Twin Cities sunset after a rainstorm

in #timelapse9 years ago

My first ever timelapse. I was driving into the Twin Cities, MN on i94 west just as a rainstorm passed and the sun was setting. I set my DSLR to do timelapse exposures for the first time and wedged it between the dashboard and windshield. Notice at about 0:11 I pass under a cloud front that looks like alien ships from a video game! It was really cool. I wish I had set the camera up for a shorter interval than 3 seconds/frame for that moment. Here's a phone pic from just before they pass the highway:

sunset clouds

Reinvesting money I've made here into a DSLR upgrade from an old D40 made this happen. Now that I know my way around the timelapse exposure mode a little better I hope to make some better ones!

This is so crazy. I posted this exact same topic today on Drivelapse filming. You had a way better sky to work with than I did!

I try not to cross-post, because I think it's kind of rude and tries to take away from the author on their own post, but I found this to be a hell of a coincidence, so I figured I'd share it. :)

Yeah, shame I wasted the sky by forgetting to expose for it properly :P I was in a hurry to get it started once I realized the rain was clearing during sunset. And I shot only in JPEG to save enough space on the card for the amount of frames I calculated I wanted. Ugh! Many lessons were learned but I'm not sure I'll find such an interesting sky again so soon.

Nice timing for sure and I don't mind for on-topic crosspost links at all.

Nice work @pfunk - I recently did a vehicle mounted time lapse at 1 second interval which can still be slightly too long. The best and really only way is to continually sharpen then saw by doing more and more. (thanks @mweich - i had gotten an email in which it showed me you mentioned me) - now following pfunk as well.

Thanks for the advice :) I might try one more timelapse with this DSLR but I've now realized that doing timelapses with any SLR you want to keep for a while is not a good idea, considering shutter life.

Yes, you can push 800 to 1200 images out in no time which does represent a slice of the shutter duration pie. I used to care about it too much, now I just treat it like any other tool. Certainly, if you are considering resale value - playing around with time lapses is foolish! Nearly brings photography back to the epoch of film when there was a consumable to factor in... I also think sometimes video that is sped up looks quite nice in some shorter duration situations... does feel like cheating though.

When I shoot in RAW or ARW, you have one set of files, then after processing you have the JPG set and the disk space can get chewed up quickly.

@pfunk, george photo. You have D40 before?

Yes I was taking pictures with the D40, but it was not good at autofocusing with the fast lens I bought and I also needed better low light performance, so I made the decision to get a major upgrade :)

The right moment for a great photo!

this is breathtaking

Beautiful. Reminds me of Arizona sunsets! it's breathtaking every night because of the dust in the air.

Gotto love those clouds and the sunset! :)

Great stuff!
Sunsets are truly breathtaking.
I find they bring out my artistic side, when I contemplate the fact that the world is so much bigger than we make it, and it helps me put my problems in perspective.

Guess an artistic guy like you @pfunk understands the feeling.

Thanks for the post!

Mesmerizing photo. Love when the story jumps at you from the photo. Thanks pfunk, you did it again.

it looks great... maybe next time you can try nature timelapse?!

Thanks, you're giving me ideas :)

awesome video :D

Someone needs to warn that car in the distance that he is about to hit a cloud.

look who's BACK!

Great sky wonderful picture 👍🏼🤓

Nice! How long was the actual drive? Timelapse videos are amazing, it's like the entire experience crammed into an easily digestible form.

Thanks. The video comprises about 32 minutes of driving.

Oh, alright. Good to know.

I find the contrast of that juxtaposition quite beautiful, in a strange way. Gorgeous natural sunset + fast food chain billboard on the highway. This is the world we live in, after all.

very good ... i gonna make my first one very soon.
