The World's Largest Iced Tea and other oddities

in #travel5 years ago (edited)

I was at my daughter's house for nine days before I learned that the town she lives in on the outskirts of Charleston had its own little downtown. Prior to that I thought it was just a blink and miss it suburbs kind of place.

Naturally I had to see it, so we left our car at Azalea Park and went walking through Summerville.

Following my daughter's butt around, both literally and figuratively ...

...was a bit of a theme this trip

Yay, finally I get to stop at one of the obscure 'world's largest', it might not be a ball of yarn, but I'll take it!

This is her "I wish I had shorts on" look :)

I had to look this up, apparently Let The Pine Be Sacred became a motto because it was pine trees that first brought settlers to Summerville in the mid-1800's. I also learned, and mentioned before, that the city of Charleston was initially built with pine...seven fires later they started using stone.

Pretty little strip...but a closer look shows some strange things....

2019-03-13 01.48.40-01.jpeg

Like this- a corridor between a cafe and a convenience store apparently leads to an 'underground' church

2019-03-13 01.52.05-01.jpeg

We could faintly hear music coming from the far end of the hall, perhaps lit candles are an indication that there's a service going on-

2019-03-13 01.52.52-01.jpeg

2019-03-13 01.53.00-011.jpeg

Yep, the music was coming from behind those double doors, and I don't know what instruments were being used or songs being sung,
2019-03-13 01.54.12-01.jpeg

but it had an eerie quality that prompted us to hurry away-

2019-03-13 01.52.15-01.jpeg

only to find the next strange thing here...now this window display is about what you might expect from a touristy little place...

2019-03-13 01.56.29-01.jpeg

Sadly it was closed because I really wanted to know what kind of place has the display shown above on one side,
2019-03-13 01.56.38-01.jpeg

then CBD products and bed pans on the other...

2019-03-13 01.56.17-01.jpeg

oh wait, there's one more window around the corner, sitz bath...haha!

2019-03-13 01.56.06-01.jpeg

Okay. This is more like it.

2019-03-13 02.00.25-01.jpeg

2019-03-13 02.20.38-01.jpeg

Now to eat.

2018-01-01 23.29.40-01.jpeg

We were actually accosted by the owner, a straight 'off the boat' Italian who was hard to refuse.

2018-01-01 23.29.45-01.jpeg

And I'm so glad we didn't refuse, the complimentary bread alone was exquisite,

and the pizza? To live for!

I generally run away from churches too XD

Maybe there were two shops sharing floor space to save money? I remember where I bought my favourite pixie hoodie from, the shop was entertaining as it was a clothing store and on one side there was all this hippie/high fantasy earth coloured loose flowy stuff, and on the other side black spiky fluro sci-fi clubbing gear XD

Yay for good food :)

I like old churches, architecture wise, the stained glass, the shapes of the buildings...but I prefer to look at it from the street ;)

That does sound entertaining- hm, I'm thinking an old folk's store and a tourist shop, set up for winter and summer :)

Looks like a really neat place to visit.
Yummy. That pizza looks amazing.

It is, and it definitely was! ;)

I'm so jealous. I can't wait to visit the worlds largest sweet tea. It's the only thing I have left to do on my bucket list. Lol.

I know right? I can die happy. ;-)
