A long way ride to Florianopolis in Brazil........but so much fun!!!! (ENG/SPA)

in #travel2 years ago

It was December 2019. My wife and I were deciding on our vacation and exploring our options. The mountains of the western provinces of Argentina, the south of Argentina with its beautiful landscapes or the usual type of holidays in one of the coastal towns of the Buenos Aires province with pretty cold beaches and some of them even too windy were some of thos options.

During one of the typical “end of the year barbecues” that we use to have around here, a couple of friends said: “what about driving to Florianopolis in Brazil?”....

I am a huge fan of Brazil myself, I went to Rio de Janeiro 9 times, so I let´s say I know about it. The problem is: I absolutely hate driving.

My wife, on the other hand, is one of those people that would drive to the end of the world literally, therefore I said to her: Ok, let´s make a deal. I do 20% of the driving, you do the other 80%. thinking that she would never have the guts to do it. To my surprise she agreed so I had no options. The planning of the trip began.

We agreed that February was going to be the best time for the trip. We started looking for some accomodation options and we finally booked an apartment that was right in front of the beach at one of the most beautiful beaches of the island: Ingleses beach.

Then we had to decide how and with which routes we were going to go. At that moment we thought that it was best for us to go via Uruguay, especially because we had friends in Montevideo and that was going to give us the chance to actually spend a couple of days in one of those places that we both love, Montevideo and Piriapolis in the southern coast of Uruguay.

Ok. The day arrived and we headed to the Buenos Aires port where we will catch a ferry to cross to Colonia, Uruguay; both our family and the car. After almost two hours, we got off at the Colonia port and the driving started. We made a short drive to Montevideo, met our friends and spent three faboulous days with them. After that, we were ready to go. My 20 per cent of the driving started there and went on up to the border between Uruguay and Brazil. From there, my wife started some of her 80 per cent of the driving. When we got to the Brazilian city of Pelotas, we got a rain that we never saw in our lives. You could not literally see an inch fron the windshield but there was no place to stop since we were on a highway fullof Brazilian cargo trucks; and believe me, those guys drive that like there´s no tomorrow. After some complaining from my wife and a little bit of change on our “driving agreement” I started my part of the driving and took it all the way to the suburbs of Porto Alegre. We spent the night in a very ugly hotel but we were anxious because the best was about to come. And it did, the driving from Port o Alegre to Florianopolis on the famous BR101 (a very beautiful Brazilian road) full of great views of little mountains, ocean, tunnels and so on was stunning. By the time we finally arrived to the apartment we were exhausted from the drive but knew exactly that we had made the right choice. We spent two faboulous weeks in that island and even drove to close places like Camboriu, Garopaba where every beach we found was even better that the previous.

So, even though I have to admit that coming back home driving almost day and a half was neither part of the agremement nor fun at all I do know that I will never forget that adventure.......
