How long since a witness' last post, last vote, and how many votes do they have?

in #witness7 years ago (edited)

Keeping track of witness voting is important to me especially as a witness (currently number 28). I spend countless hours checking on steemdb.com to see how not only my witness, but those of the Minnow Support Project are doing. You can see a full list of MSP witnesses by checking out http://minnowsupportproject.org/leadership/. In all honestly I check it probably once an hour to see how me and peeps are doing.

What's a witness?

A witness is two things. 1. It's a server that creates the blockchain and inputs settings to configure how it functions. 2. It's the person that operates the witness server.

What makes a good witness

  1. The first and foremost thing you have to do is run a reliable server for the blockchain.
  2. Add to Steemit somehow.

The first part is tricky because the block can be finicky.
The second part has a wildly ranging scope of activities. I generally break it down into two groups: technical witnesses and social witnesses.

Technical witnesses are programmers with a certain set of skills that can improve the operation of the block, change parameters to make it function better, or create programs that interact with the block and Steemians to make this place better. @gtg and @jesta are my go to examples of exceptional technical witnesses.

Social witnesses are people that spend hours helping Steemians have a positive experience with Steemit. @roelandp and his Steemfest creation is the most obvious social witness.

What kind of witness am I?

I have very little technical skills though I am competent enough to run Dr. Otto by @inertia who is a bidbot that operates with the block through a linux VPS. I'm on the social side. I founded and help manage a team of a people that do extraordinary things for the blockchain. While I'm not that technical I have the ability to support those that are and empower people through the nearly 5,000 person Discord community that I founded with @austbitbank, @theprophet0, and @teamsteem. We've added a host of other witnesses who have been encouraged by our community and those projects have a vast reach.

Which is more important?

That's actually a trick question. What I think is really the most important is activity. I think we need both the technical and the social people. @gtg is fond of saying that he doesn't always have time for the talkin' because he's busy working. I don't have time to learn to program because I'm busy managing a ~5,000 person organization. Personally I'm grateful for the folks that can program and hopefully they're grateful I'm taking on teaching thousands of post-facebook minnows to Steemit.

So, when I'm considering who I'm voting for I think: Do they support the mission of Peace, Abundance, and Liberty that I seek to fulfill? Do they add value, especially to the minnow community, through social or technical skills? Are the active either on the block or in other ways such that they are adding value.

Are they on the latest HF or at least on a recent update they support?

Do they have settings that make sense? (EX: High interest on SBD when the value is over $1 makes no sense to me)

I asked @lances to run a SQL queery for me

While the following information is available on steemd.com it's not charted nicely on that site or steemdb.com. You can get this information, but it would take 300 or so clicks. It's better to just use the queery. In exchange for his help I've promised him the liquid rewards of this post. Anyway, below you can see the number of votes a witness has received, the time of their last vote, and the time of their last post. I would caution that people can still provide value even if they aren't posting, and some aren't voting and that may actually be a piece of generosity towards the chain rather than complete neglect. So, here's some data that everyone can use to evaluate witness choices.

I believe these choices matter and impact this place greatly. The primary witnesses in the top 20 make 0.3 steem 1400 times a day through witnessing blocks for fluctuating value of 153k. The backup witnesses make 0.9 steem per witnessed block 1-60 times a day earning up to 20k steem or so in a given year. In truth at the top many of the witnesses rotate in and out of the top 20 so there isn't a clear picture of what they actually make and it's not reported from the block in an easily identifiable way currently on the most popular sites, but for the top 25 or so it's a range of 20k steem - 150k steem in a year.

The question then is what do they do with it. Many create projects. Many build sites. Many support infrastructure. Some just sit back and cash out. So, I advise you to look at this list. Check out steemdb.com/witnesses and start thinking of who would you want to support.

This is all publicly available data from the blockchain and I hope you can use it to make an informed decision.

Love,

Aggroed and thanks to @lances

Here are some badges I commissioned to help tell the story of what witnesses do around here:

Sort:

I would also like to see how much on average each Witness gives out with their votes. Is it more useful to take 1 dollar a split it amongst 100 people, or to give 1 person, or 2 people, the dollar amongst themselves.

I rarely give out "weak" votes and almost never at 1% or less. The smallest vote that comes out of my account is a 5% vote from the imposed limits of the MSP3k platform.

One of my votes can add $4-6 to a post or comment. Im curious to see this info matched up with the amount of $$ distributed from the votes.

Hmm. Will have to head back under the hood and figure out if there is an efficient way to map that and tease it out. Afraid that won't get done this week, though.

i voted for you because you can socialize, your are like the steemit social guru ;-)

Thanks Red! I am grateful for your support!

I am actually how you get these many votes in no time.
I am new to steemit .
I am a photographer and a very good writer but I never get any views on my posts , even though they are really impressive ,

Can you suggest me few tips ?

Comment on very popular posts early with high-quality comments. This will help you get followers. If your content creation is not reaching enough people, you need to get that follower number up.

Yeah. Join the Minnow Support Project and make friends in there.

I'm not that social so I try to network with quality social engineers. You are the best!

Aggroed is definitely good people. If it wasn't for him and MSP, I wouldn't be doing half the projects I'm doing. He was supportive on my witness goals and has been nothing but positive.

As a witness, you are doing what you are comfortable with.
I agree with your mindset and it leads the way for more steemians to think and become a witness.
Keep on steemit!!

The Minnow Support Project certainly has been a wellspring of new Witnesses.

wow you guys are really taking on a lot of projects here on steemit! Hard workers!

This ranking list provides a different perspective about witnesses, but it might be misleading. The witnesses are ranked by the total VESTS of their voters/proxies, not the number of votes they received. For example gtg is #7 in terms of votes received, but he's #1 on the witness ranking because he has the most VESTS received (https://steemd.com/witnesses). Also, this list includes inactive/disabled witnesses, like nextgencrypto and pumpkin. Speaking of @pumpkin, he is very low on that list, but he holds a massive value in VESTS because of proxied voters, mainly coming from @freedom. It's a complicated thing to follow and get clear picture of what's what.
And finally, I checked this yesterday, I'm getting rewarded 0.946 SP per block. The top 20 get 1/5 of that, so that's 0.189 SP/block.

FWIW, I see this as a first pass to see where the votes were landing, whether manually or by proxy. Agreed, it gets rather complex when accounting for the VESTS.

Also, as you've pointed out, it is rather interesting/disturbing that a large number of votes are with inactive/disabled witnesses. Someone ought to submit that as an issue in GitHub or go so far as to create a Pull Request. Any takers??

Woohoo I'm #17 by vote count now!
Thanks for the updated stats @aggroed and @lances :D

Awesome post. I learned a great deal in this one! I am also grateful for the info on voting.....I like how the Witness list is constantly shifting.

I love the badges. Cannot wait to earn mine!

When I vote for a witness I do it like voting spree, from the top to 30th rank. Is that correct to cast a vote for a witness?

just vote the people you think will do a good job. Top 30 doesn't necessarily mean they are any better than bottom 100. You gotta search them out and see what benefit they provide the community.

Great. I wish there was a way to see this information easier. I will make good use of that 90 badge, though.

@aggroed I truly appreciate the time you've taken to publish such a great article, you are amazing

Nice badges. I enjoy reading of the progress of MSP even though I have not personally joined yet.

You guys do a great job , I hope to see @teamsteem in the top 50, he's the real deal honestly . Always great content . Everyone's great actually , in their own ways

Ok, I'm sold. You get a follow. Thanks for checking out and commenting on my posts a bunch. And teamsteem is great. I'm honored to get to work with him. We def share a ton of overlap on our missions on the platform.

Thank you very much for the follow , just made my night . Will continue to watch you guys make this platform a better place, cheers 🍻

steemd is a good tool as well for seeing individual performance, and its always good to see a Witness upvoting the minnows.

Thank you for this information. This post is very useful

Amazing badge @agfroed. As a beginner. Nice reading of the your progress..

Sounds great!

really a good content :)

You are doing an excellent job. I voted for you

Thanks bud. Doin' my best.

me encanta tu post!

Very interesting

Thanks for this informative articles, i was really clueless about witnesses. Now i know its important.

lookin' to be a witness - need to find more information . . .

Here you go. This covers it pretty well. Be aware that it's more than setting it up and running the server, you have to network like crazy also. https://steemit.com/witness-category/@privex/so-you-want-to-be-a-witness-clearing-up-some-misconceptions

steemit chat has a witness channel. That's a good place to go.

How come this kind of blog has so many people to read and vote?

:) I've just checked this guy https://steemd.com/@blockchained
He upvotes only himself and two his developers.

While you try to build community and help others, somebody just creates a money machine

Thanks for the info. Posts like these (and, of course, your work with the Minnow Support Project) is why I went to https://steemit.com/~witnesses and voted for you as a witness.

I have question: what do the numbers mean in the badges (100s, 200s, etc.)?

I actually wondered about those exact data your post provided. I would have to to know the last blog as these counted the last comment but fair enough it was enlightening.

Great post!

Just to let you know, I found a new steemit service that gets you virtually unlimited Upvotes and Followers! (upvoteforupvote)
https://steemfollower.com/?r=1415 go to this link. Website is called steemfollower and login with your steemit ID and POSTING KEY.

Cheers!

Thank you for explaining the role of witnesses.

I hope I am voting right.
;-)
Looks like we have a lot of people not voting!
Might have to get serious about that Aggroed for President thing and get out the votes! ...
keep up the great job!
Namaste

@aggroed you got my vote long ago for witness.. you are a great help to minnows and have been there for me more than once... great post!!

Namaste. I'm glad to be of service.

First off! So cool of you to support an artist and having those badges create! How fantastic! They did a great job!

Also, I would like to vote for you, do you mind explaining how to do that? As I've never voted for anyone before.

upvoted you! Let's keep you up there! :)

Thank you, @aggroed! Truly appreciate the many ways you are making a difference, not just with MSP, but across the platform.

I just wanted to say thank you for all the hard work you've put into the system. I'm new on here and I just travel, and post travel tips and reports. So thank you for helping maintain a platform for non-techy people like myself. Keep up the good work!
