Live Music Practice Video: Sia - Helium (Vocals, Piano & Drums)

in #dtube7 years ago (edited)

Here I am playing two days ago with my friend on vocals (she survived 3 rounds on American Idol), and my baseball teammate on the piano. She was casually signing low profile here, but has an absolutely angelic voice that gives me the chills when she steps it up. It's a simple raw and imperfect clip from a practice take, but better to share than not.

In general, we're writing original songs, but play covers to build chemistry and have fun. A few friends have been coming to watch us play in the studio, which makes it a lot more fun. I always play better when people are watching.

We've typically played this song without much drums, but I threw them in here after playing to this song on my electronic kit a few weeks ago in a video I posted.

We used a microphone that plugged into a cell phone, so the treble is high to make my ride cymbal sound too bright/washy. In turn, my snare and the toms are then very hard to hear. This was a jazz drum set, which was not exactly geared for this type of music and not my style to play on, but the room was significantly less that the other music studios we've been to (a worthwhile tradeoff).

We recorded a few more songs during this light session I may add in the next couple of days.

Thanks for listening. Please let me know you were here!

It only took me ten hours to get the chance to play it!! She had a lovely voice and the drums are good but I see what you meant with the cymbal near the end because it was the phone!

Jesus, that's some sincere dedication. Thanks for listening and reading the post. You are immediately knighted as a super fan. I want to post on dtube more, but my videos eventually fall off and are deleted, plus user experience isn't quite there yet. This such a basic song with vanilla time-keeping drums. IOU a better track.

Yeah, that's the thing about DTube, you want a permanent link! I look forward to the better song as you say. Well, recording at least :0D

I posted a series of drum videos/performance/electronic kit recordings in the last month. Here's a consolation prize of two studio recordings with my old band, or a live clip, if dtube cooperates and you don't mind rock music. The first two show some pics of my full acoustic kit.

Rock music! I don't mind at all because I am Mr Metal!! I still definitely have a look!!

In this type of drumming do you play what you think is best or do singers request how you play for them.

I don't think this song had much drums in the original, so I just made up basic stuff for this since the vocals are the primary focus. The audio quality was poor to have way too much cymbal and far too little of everything else on the kit, so it doesn't sound so hot.

For other covers, the vocals and keys mainly play the written parts, and I take some liberties. We're just having fun in general and it's super casual. Our main focus is shifting to originals that she and the keys have, so drum parts come from me, but they give me feedback and direction that I welcome to make sure it fits for everyone.
