Tales of the Urban Explorer: The Cubs Hut

in Urban Exploration2 years ago (edited)

The Cubs Hut’ is not officially next on my list of explores. That belongs to yet another Time Capsule, as does the one after that.

It's a question of slow-releasing 'the good stuff' intermingled with the duffers. I can't do the best ones one after another?

14_IMG_0055_14.jpg

This means you're going to have to tolerate this rather crap explore, which was discovered by @anidiotexplores and is quite close to where he lives.

15_IMG_0056_15.jpg

I have never been for discrimination of explores. If we can get in and there's something to photograph then it's fair game. If it sucks big donkey dicks like this then so be it.

The Cubs brought back bad memories for me. I joined at the age of 8, allowed my parents to buy me the full clothing outfit, and then attended around 4 times before vetoing it.

They were hardly impressed with the wasted expenditure, but I was even less enthralled with the rampant bullying.

If Lord Baden-Powell meant well with his 'Cubs', then he could stick his Cub Scouts up his arse as well as the ‘teachers’, and the beefy older lads who attended bringing their wayward fists.

That was in the 1970s and this is now. Why is this one abandoned and vandalised?

I expect the kids of today to be farting out behind their video consoles, and collectively contributing to our growing world obesity problem.

1_IMG_0040_1.jpg

We approached the building with caution; it's parallel to a dodgy council estate with plenty of would-be Karen's.

@anidiotexplores had primed it, so unless a lock had magically appeared on the front door, it was a walk-in.

It looked like a custom-made DIY building made solely for purpose. The one I joined was hosted in an old decaying church and nothing like this.

Walking inside did not result in a flood of nostalgia, it was another shit-tip heavily vandalised with few redeeming features.

2_IMG_0041_2.jpg

Studio 2 does look like it used to host magicians. I questioned @anidiotexplores who assured me that it was a Cub’s Hut in its final days.

3_IMG_0042_3.jpg

I can see the local kids held no fondness for it, though kicking down plasterboard thin walls in a mindless frenzy seems to be quite fashionable in today's youthful society.

4_IMG_0044_4.jpg

This indicates Girls were welcome. It was only Boys when I was a member, the Girls joined the Guides.

5_IMG_0045_5.jpg

It does look like a serving hatch. Pie and Peas is the traditional poor diet food handed out to stop you from freezing to death during our winters.

6_IMG_0046_6.jpg

Hardly the décor to suit a teenager, the cubs typically handled boys at ages less than 10. The mural was as good as it was going to get.

7_IMG_0047_7.jpg

8_IMG_0048_8.jpg

The main area was quite small, a contrast to my experience which was large enough to play ‘British Bulldogs’ where you would get intentionally tripped up by the bigger lads when trying to pass them.

9_IMG_0049_9.jpg

What better place to start a fire than in something quite combustible? I can’t see ‘The Cubs Hut’ lasting for much longer, especially as it’s in close proximity to the late ‘White Lion' which suffered a recent fatal arson attack.

10_IMG_0051_10.jpg

Yes, it's scraping the bottom of the barrel; the sign miraculously had not been ripped away from the wall by frenetic, delirious youths in search of fulfillment.

11_IMG_0052_11.jpg

If I thought I may find any paperwork here, I would be mistaken. Toilet parts however could be attained quite freely and in large quantities.

12_IMG_0053_12.jpg

We left ‘The Cubs Hut' hoping it was not going to set a precedent for that days' exploring when it came to quality.

The real question is, who does Disney sue for the Jungle Book art ripoff mural? We know they would if they could.

I'm not sure just who they would sue, beside some rotting concrete, decomposing woodwork and a bit of old toilet.

Thanks to upvote

I actually used to be in the Cubs, for the most part I hated it, it was before I'd learned to say 'no' - I was 'seconder' and was due to become 'sixer' as the then current one was leaving - I finally plucked up the courage to tell my parents I wanted out, I've never liked responsibility.

On the upsides I have some VERY FOND memories of the very occasional Thursday night when we couldn't make it - I remember because The Adventure Game was on BBC2 and I always used to miss the end of it if Cubs was on, but on those Cub-free nights I got to see the 'evaporation game' finale, and more of that strange talking plant thing.

Funny how your post brings it all back!

'seconder' and was due to become 'sixer'

I haven't got a dickies about any of this. I remember seeing badges for this and that, such as lighting a fire without matches.., they looked impressive awards. Then when I got there it was British Bulldogs every evening.

Cubs were organised into groups of 6 - competitions between them, leather woggles, remember those?

barrel scraped!!!!
I was always fearful of grown men in little shorts hanging around with young boys
dib dib dib
dob dob dob.

Oh yes, the shorts on grown men with beards. I had forgotten about this. The best thing about this is.., its an EXCLUSIVE!

I should put in on Facebook immediately.. and brag about how we were first.

LOl, don't forget to beg for likes and subs

If it's a crap one should I downvote it?

I spent a few years in Cubs and enjoyed a fair bit of it with various camping activities. My son did it too. Neither of us went on the Scouts. Those who run these things have to be dedicated. I did help out a few times.

That hut looks a lot like those I've seen, but we didn't have the mural. My old Scout hut in Bedford is still there and it's wooden, so wouldn't survive long if it were abandoned.

They are usually in huts like these? My experience was in a church and not a pleasant one. I have few good childhood memories. Maybe its the north, and its barbarism?

The village one is a breeze block hut like that with the serving hatch from the kitchen. I think the Brownies use the church. Depends what local facilities are available.

I put my son in Cub Scouts and he never said anything negative about it. Of course, he met up in a church, which was pretty nice.

I'm going to ask him because I'm curious, he only went for a couple of years but young boys can be really cruel, but not quite as bad as girls. I don't get it, but, it is true!

I can just see the leader of the last meeting at this place.. Okay boys let's tear it up! Well done, I would say.

I always find it exciting to see just what you're going to roll out for us. I found it interesting that this could have been the way they were building their clubs/meeting places. I see another said that his club looked exactly like that. I guess if their chapter had enough money...

It must have been just me who had a bad experience. The kid who took me there was the local farmers son and a bully. That could have been a factor. Its so long ago the details are hazy in my head.

Not at all! There are many to have and bad experiences but showing up with a bully probably didn't do you any favors. Of course, we don't know those things when we are growing up.

Funny cause I never thaught there were others doing "urban exploration"... and I found an entire community!

At least fire exist is still clear!

You might trip over some old bog parts.., but yes.. quite easy to escape.

Nice one 👌. There is so much substance hanging and pointed debris waiting to turn exploration into final destination lol. Do you get bruised?

!WINE !PIZZA

I get injured occasionally, nothing serious.

council estate with plenty of would-be Karen's

fucking hell the worst kind

at least the toilets are in perfect working conditions, just in case

Yes, very useable.. though you may sustain injuries using them 😀

What a hard post my friend, and also the pictures are kinda shocking. Very well captivated the substance.

It helps to get there before places get wrecked. On this occasion it was not to be.

Looks like some people had a good party here😅

Fortunately they had left before we arrived 😃

It must be an awful feeling hanging around in places like this. Cool post, @slobberchops.

I wonder whether this Cubs Hut consisted of just toilets :)

There was an abundance, it could be good training for future employment as a bog cleaner?

Why not. Not everybody should be a white-collar.

Looks putrid tbh, especially those toilets. oof

If there was something more interesting, I would have veto'd those toilets!

You made it sound like it was going g to be an awful post but it was bad at all. I like the photo of the destroyed wall. It almost looks like an art piece. Deconstructivism maybe? lol

There are times when I have to place personal memories in an explore to give it some depth. It didn't trigger many memories, as the location was completely different to my cubs experience.

Yeah, that makes sense. I get that as well when I take a long time to get around to posting about something or if I have a backlog that I'm working through.

I loved being in scouts when I was a kid, but had a similar "no" experience that my parents were not happy about with swimming lessons. In my defense, my mother should NOT have been surprised, but she did it to me not once, but twice - signing me up for swimming lessons when I was debilitatingly phobic of water. When I had a meltdown panic and wouldn't go back, she was so surprised for some reason, and blamed me. I was like ...I would have told you from the start not to sign me up (and she should have known!).
I am better about water now, because in high school we had a swimming pool and I asked the swim teacher, so, I'm so scared of water I can't let go of the wall, but maybe if I get in a pool every day I'll relax a little, can I take swim class without being flunked for not doing laps with the other kids? And she was like YES, take the class! Well it turns out that woman was a saint and very patiently worked with me every day until by the end of the semester I could tread water a little, swam half a lap without panicking and grabbing the wall, and she even got me to go in the deep end once (sobbing, clutching the wall, with a friend and one teacher on the ledge and another teacher in the water with me, but I did it! LOL). So my blessings to that teacher!

Oh lord and now I've just remembered this 'hessian sack' game they used to make us play - that would probably be defined as child abuse these days.

be defined as child abuse these days.

Likely a lot of that went on, I escaped it all thankfully!
