Beach Bum

in Silver Bloggers3 years ago

I am turning into a beach bum, without a decent beach, nor a decent bum.

There is a saying that I read in a book about running several years ago,

You don't stop running because you get old, you get old because you stop running.

The problem with becoming a bum is that I have not been posting as frequently and as a result, I am getting lazy. I am still posting once a day, but it feels more difficult when it was easy and I think it is because I am starting to mentally atrophy. Under normal circumstances, perhaps this isn't so bad, but with current conditions, it is far too risky. So, while I ama bit work out from the day, I am going to get a second one in before I rest.

OI000037 (2).jpg

One of my own sayings is,

Give the day your all, before you lay your head down.

I have lived this way for years and it has worked well for me, though the volume of work might not be to everyone's tastes. When I started this habit, I was both surprised at how much I could get done and how much more satisfaction I got from life, and disappointed that I hadn't started far earlier. If I had I boarded this philosophy earlier, I suspect things would have been quite different.

I think a lot of people can surprise themselves when it comes down to it, though in this day and age, it rarely comes down to it. I was saying to my wife today that perhaps if there was a world war 3, people would stop spending their time worrying about material and ridiculous things.

Can you imagine people spending their time, attention and resources on fighting for personal pronouns in 1940's Berlin?

Me neither. I wonder what the tabloid magazines were writing about at the time and I wonder how many people spent their time discussing entertainment gossip, or leisure activities.

When push comes to shove, we tend to outperform out average and be far more agile around changing circumstances. So, why don't we push and shove ourselves a bit more when we aren't forced into it. Opt into self-imposed discomfort, work a little more, go without a little more, change a little more.

We have largely grown accustomed to put conditions to the point that no matter if our lives are brilliant or brutal, if it takes too much effort to change, we won't. If there is risk that we will lose what we have, we won't.

OI000033.jpg

An hour less of TV or gaming, skipping a donut and coffee, walking the stairs - little things that done regularly add up to becoming something significant and tend to compound into other facets of life.

Keystone habits.

The benefits of going to the gym doesn't end with the muscles. People who start exercising tend to start to eat better, sleep better, think better, feel better and, get better results from their life. One positive habit often supports the development of more.

But it works in reverse too, where a keystone negative habit tends to have knock-on effects on the development of more. It is rare that a person is able to contain a single vice without it bleeding into the creation or extension of more.

It works like a car salesman, getting one yes makes it easier to get the next, and once that is obtained the barrier to the next yes is lower again. Once we break one rule, the chance of anothet being broken goes up. This is why they talk about gateway drugs in this manner, as taking one increases the odds of experimenting with more. It isn't this black and white though, but it is okay here for a basic illustration.

Addiction is hen we crave something and struggle to stop ourselves from having it. The media is full of drug narratives, gaming, sex... People doing harmful things to get what they crave.

But they fail to mention consumer addiction, where people are craving new purchases that they will put themselves deeper and deeper into debt. They become slaves to their dealers, the credit pushers - the banks.

Gateways.

One credit card has to be opened before the second, and the second before the third.

It doesn't get mentioned, even though for most people, debt is one of their most influentional paramaters on their lives, as it takes away opportunity, creates obligation and, creates a pattern of behavior.

If we were to look at the behaviors in our lives and consider what adds and subtracts from our desired opportunities, I wonder what we would discover. If we were to covert some of the negative value toward positive activity, I wonder if we could have an inpact on our lives.

I suspect the answer is that we would be surprised at how much we can improve and how satisfying we find the process. But, old habits die hard and once an addict, always an addict. It is very easy to slip back into habits that make us slow, weak, old.

You can run at the beach too.

Now my day is done and I can lay my head down.

You could write a book on phrases filled with so much wisdom and insight; I don't see an ounce of laziness here especially wiyh your philosophy of

Give the day your all, before you lay your head down.

I believe in doing just that, but find it difficult to focus since having a tia episode recently, very scary, but I was right as rain soon thereafter although I am finding myself forgetting stupid little things!

Mine was not serious and I'm on blood thinners (allergic to aspirin) but your condition is more serious, I do hope you are improving.

You may be writing less, but I believe in quality not quantity and your work still is of such a high standard, not a lazy bone there!
I know I'm repeating myself but it's a fact!

One positive habit often supports the development of more.

And the opposite sadly also is true as you say!

But...
Writing certainly helps one focus as you can go back and reshuffle to get more order; in any case that's what I often have to do, as my mind is in many places at one time! Bad habit that's now been exacerbated!

Covid lockdowns taught me one good thing and that is to make do with what I have and not jump into the car to go and spend and end up buying unnecessary things!

Get well soon @tarazkp !

I agree with you Lady @lizelle as fellow tia aspirant, I also struggle to get things together, but slowly, slowly does it for me.

Perhaps I will hire an editor one day to compile some wisdom :D

very scary, but I was right as rain soon thereafter although I am finding myself forgetting stupid little things!

That sounds terrible. How long does it last?

I used to make notes of drafts that I would write later, but found that I would have ended up posting 8 times a day if I wrote them all. If I could get away with writing for a living, I would. It is empowering and cathartic.

I think a big part of the gateway drug, or retail therapy, is the idea of "if I have this, then I'll be happy". Once you get it, you realize that you aren't any happier. So, obviously, the answer is to have more or something else. We want the unhappiness to be caused by something else, or lack of something else. When, in fact, we're just unhappy people. That sounds bad. However, it is quite liberating. If the answer is within, then we can choose to be happy regardless of the circumstances.

I read somewhere about love, the emotion, following from love, the verb. Emotions can be ephemeral. We can love somebody one day and hate them the next. But, if you act out of love, eventually the emotion catches up and you actually feel love towards a person.

Going back to happiness, more and more, it seems to me, to be a personal choice. So much in life is out of our control. We can't rely on life to provide happiness for us. It has to come from within us, from our love for life, for others, and for what we do. This is something completely under our control. But, I think that frightens some. It's frightening to think that if you are miserable, it is because you are a miserable person. And, like the knock-on effect you mention, it brings additional misery to pile on top. Or, you can choose to be happy, and the knock-on effect is to heap more happiness on top.

I'll stop before this becomes a blog post.

I agree. It isn't just in consumption either - I reckon Tinder is fueled by this mentality of people trying to fill a void with the wrong thing, then looking for more of the wrong thing, when it inevitably fails.

It's frightening to think that if you are miserable, it is because you are a miserable person.

You know how people look at the body of a pro athlete and think if they do the same, they can have the same body? what most don't realize is that they had the foundation of that body before the sport - playing basketball doesn't make you tall. People need to learn about who they are before they can really discover what they are capable of.

The world war 3 point got me thinking and I couldn't stop myself from agreeing. We draw a circle of comfort zone around us and start facilitating ourselves in that zone. With such mentality we tend to shift to materialistic things. Like you said, we come out of our comfort zones during the time of crisis. This is what we need to acquire in our daily lives to make the most of our lives.

I, as an individual, have put myself in that comfort zone and I have been trying kill this resultant laziness but old habits die hard. I will be moving to an other city at the end of August 2021 to explore myself and focus clearly on my studies and prepare for the commissioned exams. For this I direly need to acquire what you do for yourself.
Give the day your all, before you lay your head down.

Also, you write beautifully sir 💞🥺. I've been learning from @galenkp about how to write an effective blog/post here and I consider him my teacher now. And from you I am learning such amazing things. I'll be honored if you consider me your student💓🥺.

Making the choice to introduce discomfort in daily life can go a long way to getting us accustomed to when it does arrive. Plus, if done in the right areas, can actually improve our conditions for daily life too. We make uncomfortable decisions to make ourselves stronger, so then we can face more uncomfortable situations with less effort.

Good luck with your move and with your studies!

Thanks a bunch sir 😁💞

He's my smarter younger brother...I'm the dense one.

You both seem smarter to me 😄💓 have a blessed day 💞

You too mate, have a good Thursday.

I agree with you about the phrase about running.
Work, work schedule makes a person be in good shape. If a person gives up and begins to break the working regime, then he begins to age.

Laziness is killing us.

Laziness is a killer for sure and it isn't just our bodies that are dying, our minds and wills are suffering too.

Yes. I wanted to say exactly about the mind and will. The body is already the second in line

I think one needs a balance between work and play. That said structure and a bit of pressure do foster creativity.

I could not agree more with you on materialism and petty preoccupations. IMO the pandemic has made ot worse among those least affected.

Trust your recovery is going well.

If there is a bit of pressure in the play, more pressure can be absorbed at work without it affecting as much. I find that too often, we end up polarised, working very hard, playing by doing nothing. I think this leaves us in some kind of bi-polar swing that is hard to sustain without stress. For me, pulling work and play closer together means life is far more balanced.

The pandemic is going to affect us all for many years to come. Much of the negative will be self-inflicted through habits.

I am getting there :)

Yes, that tension balance makes sense to me. Glad you're getting there.

Come on bro! Stop torturing yourself and start sleeping well and as much as you can while you can.

Give the day your all, before you lay your head down.

Yeah! forget about your own saying and just let the formidable Neuroplasticity do its amazing job. Because when one area of the brain is damaged somehow, it's easier for others areas to naturally pick up the slack if you just let it do what needs to be done while you are sleeping. You know?

I sleep enough.

If the bits of the brain that are affected aren't activated, they can remain locked forever.

If the bits of the brain that are affected aren't activated, they can remain locked forever.

That's not true and you know it.

Perhaps you still have not realized how much healing "activity" is generated in your brain while you sleep and above all, when you allow it to dream as it must.

That's not true and you know it.

Well, it is true. The longer it takes to start rehabilitation, the harder it becomes, even more so at higher ages.

Sleep all you want.

I don't know if you actually watch the videos that I've shared with you. This revealing video below is gonna be the second and last time that I will show you in one of my comments. Simply, because I really care about your wellbeing. But obviously, you are absolutely free to do what you please.

I was an addict of the credit card debt at one time. To get a bank credit card you needed to have some debt somewhere, thus the department credit card at high interest rate for 6 months. You finally begin to build a credit score, but you had to go into revolving debt to do it. Six months later the bank gives you the bank issued credit card at a semi decent rate.

To late you now want to build your credit score and two credit cards don't help, so you get a couple more department store cards, make small purchases and off to the cleaners the banks go, interest and more interest they collect from you. before you know it you have a visa card, a discovery card, a sears card, a radio shack card, a pennys card, and you got that ever coveted bank line of credit; a signature loan. You hit the biggest milestone of all, a bank line of credit.

Ten years to build the history, and ten plus years to tear down the credit fiasco, you finally pare it down to one credit card, one bank card and the credit line stays available for emergency use, but at a zero balance.

It would be nice to be able to not have a credit card, unfortunately society and businesses really have a penchant for giving their money to banks. I remember seeing stores when I was growing up with signs "no checks or credit cards" now it is signs with "No Cash, credit cards only".

You finally begin to build a credit score, but you had to go into revolving debt to do it.

I don't think they do the credit score here, at least not like in the US. I find it crazy that encouraging debt in the way they do is legal.

I remember seeing stores when I was growing up with signs "no checks or credit cards" now it is signs with "No Cash, credit cards only".

The incentives in this world are all aligned to make a few people very rich and many people suffer. The many question why they can't make their lives better, yet keep doing exactly what the few have conditioned them to do.

Debt makes the world go round - as it keeps the debt slaves working.

It would be nice to see crypto, or something replace the debt drive, but it is doubtful if anything will. Banks or Exchanges, someone is going to charge fee's/tax/gas fees.

As long as you're posting at least once a day otherwise we're going to worry ;D

You have slowed down to 1-2 posts a day in the past for various reasons, reckon you'll pick back up again no problem.

Yeah, it could also be that since I am not working as much - I am getting dumber :D

Just work at something else ;D

My body needs a lot of work...

Sounds like a great project!

I am happy to have bumped into this post and reading your post as well as the comments thereunder. You're all intelligent people with wide range of understanding of what's going on within that little machine called brain and talking more sense about wellbeing.

I am lucky I have so many smart followers :)

Indeed.

I have not been posting as frequently and as a result, I am getting lazy

I don't agree. I wish I can post like you everyday, even one. Right, it should be hard to maintain.

I don't understand why so many people struggle to post regularly. It isn't hard to do something.

I think it's bcoz of free time. I work and I am somehow busy rest of the time.

Eat that crab meat to get big ass I heard in saweetie video

Dear my friend @tarazkp, Why are you revealing your wife's sexy back to other men?😄
Wouldn't your wife be offended if she found out about your behavior?😁

My wife reads my blog. What I find strange is that people spend hours on the internet looking at naked strangers, but think this is an issue.

Seeing your wife's photos on your blog made you feel like a prankster.😄

Very motivating and encouraging blog. Will take from it and make myself a better person

Heads off to you for writing a post a day. Loved your nuggets of wisdom.

Every lives has its freedom of thinking in any matters as how you simply relate your thinking for not being a decent bum but a beach bum which shows how you love the beach without any choice of gossiping and leisures .Life should always be going in presence of peace of mind and sometimes we get touched with some view point but always we don't forget our destiny of peace .
