A whole other world exists in the skies above. A world most are totally oblivious too. In the tranquil blue sky - with whispy drifting clouds and gentle breezes - a battle of life and death rages. Predator and prey. Each with a right to the skies. Each with a right to survival.
With the return of the rains after the 7 year drought, the wildlife is returning. It is a wonderous sight. And sound. The constant orchestra of twittering which changes to a choir of alarm when a raptor darkens the sky. Southern Chanting Goshawks were first to return. Then Jackal Buzzards and Black Shouldered Kites.
Recently our homestead was selected by a magnificent Harrier Hawk as his new home and hunting ground. The children have nicknamed him Harry. Assuming he is a he! Early in the morning or at the end of a sweltering day the choir of twittering stops then becomes hysterical cries of alarm as the skies fill with confused birds, chasing and escaping the lazily circling raptor.
We don't choose sides in this life and death struggle. Each has a right to survive. But the beauty of each unique bird, both predator and potential prey is jaw dropping. What a masterpiece of feathered beauty fills our skies above.
Amazing photography and how lucky are you not to have these sightings? For some reason the hawks and eagles decide to visit my garden in the suburbs when my camera is not near. I am green of jealousy! They are magnificent creatures and what battles we do not see in the skies right? There is a buzzard and a harrier hawk that always fight with the crows above our home. One day I will capture their awesome battle! I hope all is well! Especially with the much needed rains.
Hi! It is quite a blessing to not only sight them regularly but have so many actually living in the mountains around us. I just hope Mr Harry doesn't decide that our chicks are a nice snack. Looking forward to you capturing your own magnificent raptors. I know what it's like to be out there without the camera and so many opportunites. I keep missing the hoopoes and kestrels. They obviously know when the camera is not over my shoulder
Right? They know when you have the camera and will not reveal themselves but when you forget it it is as if they become friendly. Alas, some moments should not be captured!

They truly are wonderful :) ... I can imagine that many birds and small mammals aren't too happy about your new occupant, but Harry deserves a great home too :)
