FIVE SIMPLE WAYS TO SUPPORT YOUR POST WITHOUT LOOKING LIKE AN INTERNET THIEF

It's time for me to have a freak out, a hissy fit, a foot stamp and a moan. Sometimes, things bug me that much that I just have to HIVE about it. Thank goodness for the catharsis this platform provides, am I right? Where would us HIVERS be without a good rant?

For those of you that know me, you could probably attest to the fact I'm fairly forgiving, adaptable, and tolerant. I understand that language difficulties and the desire to earn here makes for some posts that are - well, not perfect, but still, interesting and valuable to our global social media that embraces all cultures and communities because we're pretty inclusive like that.

Not all of us have learnt the intricate details of markdown, and are still learning how to use capital letters at the start of sentences or finding out what the code is to center an image. That's okay, I can deal with that.

But stop passing yourself off as a medical expert by listing all the benefits of a medicinal plant, herb, or vegetable.

You aren't an expert. You've just googled it and copy and pasted it to your blog to pretend you know what you're talking about.

Don't tell me that you can't spell the name of the plant properly but you somehow can spell anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and alleviate.

Granted, if you change a few words around it might not look like plagiarism, but it is because you've just copied someone else's work, probably Medical News Today or WebMD.

That's theft - and worse, you're stealing from the reward pool on HIVE by getting rewards for work that isn't even yours.

Okay, I get it. Not all of you are thieves and ne'er'do'wells.

Some are adding perceived value to your gardening post or a great recipe handed down from your mother. Nice. I like it. Personal stories and anecdotes are great folk wisdom.

But for goodness sake, source this information.

Here's a couple of ways to do it.

(1)

'According to [WEBMD](link to URL where you took the information), arnica is good for 'quote information here to show it's not your words''

(2)

'According to 'Medical News Today',

With at least five ways to correctly source your claims about a medicinal plant, there's no excuse for passing it off as your own.

The thing is, it's dangerous to make wild claims about plants without backing it up. You morally and ethically should be pointing people toward information that would help people make informed decisions about their health.

I would suggest that if it doubt, you should leave it out.

By all means tell us the story about how it's impacted your health, but there is no need to back your perfectly legitimate story with evidence that isn't well sourced.

There's enough fake news in the world without you adding to it.

Rant over.

With Love,

Supporting Meditators on HIVE

Sort:

After manually curating for a couple of months now between Hive, Cine, Leo, Lotus, Pob, Sports, and Stem I feel addressing the problem is difficult. There is no one solution for that blissful quick fix. Everyone, I'm assuming for lotus, is here because of their beliefs. Pay is secondary. Not everyone knows the standard, but it should be communicated at least for the peace of mind of the group.

The school I'm attending checks for spelling, grammar, and plagiarism across the internet the moment after I submit a paper electronically. I don't know that Lotus can afford such a capability. The second best option is again, in my opinion, is to encourage people to report suspected activities that go against the LOTUS guidelines. From there, curators can judge for themselves and appropriate UV or DV. If people feel bad about DV'ing, then assign the payout deadline as the period available to correct or address the issue.

I would normally talk about this in discord, but for some strange reason, I haven't asked about the channel. If you could provide a link that would be grand.

Your post is too valuable not to promote so, um, I promoted it.

I don't think we'll ever fully tackle plagiarism and unrelated content 100%, but hitting it in waves every so often will likely cause some folks to give up on gaming the rewards system. A lot of crap posts are being upvoted with LOTUS by BroFi, and that may present more problems down the road when they have a larger amount of staked LOTUS.

Wow, I didn't know that was an issue. Thanks for sharing. I'm sure they would adjust their behavior unless the attempt was already made.

Ha, that's very sweet. I assure you I'm super calm and chilled, and I'm just ranting for the lolz . Well, to make a point anyway, as it's a super real issue here that bugs me somewhat... :)

!ENGAGE 25

I get :)

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

Ah yes, the classic spun content. Everyone is a scientist or medical expert and telling you intricate things about the workings of the chemicals in things and can't spell simple words. Grinds my gears no end that!

MAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE, try being the leader of Natural Medicine! Kill me now!

And thanks for stopping by - I feel blessed!

Hahaha, yeah, you must see atonne of it!!!

Blessed you are! :0D

LOL , it's what they learned at school , when copy paste was introduced with Window's . Somehow we can't really blame them , it's how they got there grades . Now they must learn those grades are worthless , and see that they have no skills . ;-)

Oh yeah, the old days of copy and paste - what a modern miracle! No carbon copy!!! Seriously though, it's not like they haven't been told! Nice to see you, how's life in Europe - are you still in Greece!?

Europe is at the brink of civil war , i left Greece last year , it was a death end to me , learned a lot , met the most friendly people among the Greek and expat's . So i returned to the heart of the WEF NWO test ground we know as the Netherlands . A very save place ,... boring save ,.. mind-killing save . But at least i can step up on Sunday's and face riot-cops for all our lost freedom .
I hope one day to be able to cross borders free again , that we stop copy pasting borders and restrictions , about time we start using the delete function some more , on our "own" works . ;-)

Oh yeah it seemed/seems pretty hard core in Europe right now. 'Home' is probably the best place to be. I miss free borders. I wonder if we'll ever get it back.

Afraid we will get nothing back , it was taken to keep . We will have to get it back ourselves somehow .
There are about 60 official witness declarations from Dutch police officer's and police violence victims being posted on Ytube . Police officers that are against the action's they are ordered to take can leave a recorded witness that will be spoken out on Ytube by a unknown voice hiding there i.d. .
This https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzBTOlq2SlV4TFYV1aaAuow project is set up and done by a Dad and his daughter , all original recordings are in a vault at a lawyers office for later use in trails that may come from this all .
There are some very disturbing story's coming to light about the Dutch police corps and how it's being led . It's all in Dutch , witch brings me back to topic . Do translations from Dutch to English from those witnesses ad any value , and how does that work with plagiarism ? Would citing it's resource be enough ? Or is some consent from the original creator needed ?

I'm not sure what you mean. It's plagiarism if you're copying straight from another source, even if you source it - because you're profiting from someone else's work.

Better to explain and paraphrase, add your opnion, contextualise it, and refer to the link I suppose.

Ill do a post about them , quote some witnesses , and refuse any rewards it get's .
https://bpoc2020.nl/ , is there main site witch google translate has no trouble with putting in to English .
It's Ytube subtitles that might not work , spoken Dutch is to hard for Ai to translate properly .
I like how this set's work's in motion to , in a peaceful way , get the police force from a oppressing dehumanizing force back to a honest human serving institute . N.A.C.A.B. ;-)

I have been seriously thinking about this issue because I can memorize everything that I pay attention to.
I study yoga regularly from my teacher, books, podcasts, and I take in the knowledge in such a way that makes me question every time I write content or teach yoga: "Are these my words, or my teachers/podcast/books?"
Sometimes I feel that everything I express is from someones or somewhere else.

Anyways, this is a worldwide issue, information overload, copy-paste, etc.
Much appreciation for this blog post, It is not a rant at all. Very well addressed a big issue that needs everyone's attention. Lots of love

Oh but there is SUCH a difference between your educated, informed and knowledgeable approach - as an educator, you have the authority to advise about yoga. But your average 'insert country' farmer can not bullet point me the medicinal benefits of a plant and have me believe him as an authority. thankyou for your support!

The internet conundrum lol everyone just searches the internet, copies or and bam now I’m SUPAH SMAHT (Boston accent for you :D) it’s pretty funny. I chuckled a little bit at the big words or phrases then not spelling other things correctly lol. I find that so often! It’s like come on we know you didn’t know what the hell that was hahaha. I might copy and paste your sourcing example into comments of people’s posts that I know are full of crap with what they are copying.

I want to give people the benefit of the doubt for sure, it’s hard to do sometimes lol

Oh gawd I hear you. It's hard not to be jaded. Spending an awful lot of time here dealing with this kinda thing - wish there was a simpler solution!

LOL that was a good rant, especially when you mentioned how they can't spell the name of the pant but every other health benefit of the plant I couldn't help laughing.
Maybe I did that too many years ago, but the internet taught me so much.
Give credit and source the images and information right was one thing I learned when I stared on HubPages.
It worries me to death when I see information saying drink garlic juice for covid and such on the internet, it can kill people. I have read such terrible bs on another site which is on the verge of closing down.
I guess people need reminders like these from time to time. Thanks a ton.

No worries, yeah, it's driving me nuts so I was probably a bit harsh. But I figure some people genuinely dont get it and I'm more than happy to help.

Sweet if you @riverflows. True, some people may not mean it and may really need some help. Have a lovely day

So true

Well said! Thank you for sharing 💚

You're welcome!

This is so true, I see so many post benefits and can tell they copied.

Hopefully more will this post and link sources.

I hope so, I think we just have to keep reinforcing the message and pinging people's posts so they get the hint.

Agreed, Will always be an ongoing thing so the reminders are good.

Thanks for making this guide for people, and so important in this community, where misinformation could potentially be dangerous.

Just because the typo in this instance matters to markdown and might frustrate someone:

'According to [WEBMD](link to URL where you took the information], arnica is good for 'quote information here to show it's not your words''

...your closing parenthesis is a bracket on example #1.

Thanks. Im going to writ an official less ranty how to to refer people to, and would have copy and pasted the code :) .... so thanks!

Even medical journals use quoted information, but they tell you where it comes from... so yeah completely agree.

I'm sure that they either a) are uneducated or don't realise or b) don't care.

By indicating the reference the information is more valid, the reader has the right to go to the page from which the information was obtained for further research and to decide whether he/she wants to use an alternative medicine or not.

I definitely agree. I think it's irresponsible to not provide those references!

I agree with you completely on this. As a former natural medicine website owner with Google ads, their stipulation was that all information be sourced or they would stop payments.
It is really important to source where the information comes from and whilst plagiarism will give the author a little extra money on the post it will affect their long term efforts on the platform.

Very tactfully written and I love that you have offered advice on how to source too.

Much love to you 💚🤗💚

Source: this comment was copied and pasted from my brain 😂

I didn't think it was tactful at all - I think I totally hammered it... :P

I do get tired of sifting through regurgitated google search posts, trying to gently encourage these folks to just share a recipe instead or show us how you use it. You're not crazy, just trying to bring more value to #naturalmedicine and the LOTUS token.

Many people are mediocres, they don't wanna take the time to create a masterpiece, they wanna litter everywhere in search of short term income.
In creating contents, giving credits to source is paramount. You've well outlined how that could be done.
Thanks.

Thanks very much @mmykel. I'm glad you agree xx
