ecoTrain Question Of The Week: Why do you think so many computer games are based on extreme violence? Do you think it is healthy or unhealthy?

Welcome back to the Question Of The Week! This week we look at a topic that is rarely discussed or questioned.. and yet a huge percentage of our children and adults spend copious amounts of time shooting, beheading, gunning down, and generally causing mayhem to other people in virtual worlds and games. These days the games are getting more real than ever before, and it wont be long before its hard to distinguish it from real life! The question is, why are so many of us into this kind of violence? It's fair to say the most people who play them are not violent in real life, and would probably never even hit someone let alone fire a rocket launcher at their head! What i find especially interesting is that this is a trend that spans the entire globe, all cultures and people from all walks of life.

I once read a news story about a man who was riding down the highway on his motorbike in real life. He almost lost his life because he forgot it was real and he literally got off his bike whilst riding at high speed. Needless to say it wasn’t pretty and he was badly injured. The line between reality and gaming is getting thinner, and its fair to ask whether there are any effects that these games have on us. Whilst it MAY be true that these games don’t really cause most people to become violent I wonder if there are any significant effects on us from playing them.

Let's have a quick look at the current top 5 games just to drive the point home!

1. League of Legends. This game is is a multiplayer online battle arena video game

2. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Siege
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege is an online tactical shooter video game .

3. Valorant is a free-to-play multiplayer tactical first-person shooter

4. Minecraftt! (the exception!)
The purpose of the game is simply to build and explore (and survive).

5. Counter-Strike:
Global Offensive is a multiplayer first-person shooter

It's interesting, and it seems like most of the violence these days uses weapons, large and small. Its rare to see hand to hand combat any more, although it used to be quite popular with games like Mortal Combat. I can still remember playing that game on occasion. I was terrible at it, and i can remember being beheaded many times by my obliging friend.

So what do you think about this?! Do you think its a good release and escape, a way for us to vent our frustration as well as be completely immersed in another world as a wonderful escape from normal life? Or, do you think we could benefit from other kind of games? Perhaps you know of one that is not violent and encourages good habits or ideas? One example would be Sim City, which was based more on creating and building things, but it is not very popular these days. In fact there is no kind of simulation game even in the top 20!

AS always, feel free to post about any aspect of gaming. If you are an avid gamer yourself I would love to hear from you and what your experience is. Do they help you in some way? Are you someone who has violent tendencies and find relief when you play these games? Do you play a LOT and feel like you may be addicted? IF so what is it about these games that are so compelling!?

i look very forward to your post jose!

Hola muy interesante el tema de esta semana

Greetings, a very interesting subject and one that directly influences our children, I believe that this type of game could come to mould aggressive behaviour in some children.

But unfortunately they have become a trend without any kind of restriction.

Have a great weekend !

I am an outdated mother with regard to video games, I am null in that practice, but I have a son and a grandson who are fans, I think that what little I have learned my grandson has taught me, let me see what I can share for Ecotraim

Ah yes,I am feeling this one 😉 Thanks @ecotrain

This is a very good question that I have been asking myself for many years. These games are definitely not healthy and cannot be beneficial to the human psyche at all, especially in children.

I think that culture in general has led us to see it as "normal" for children to play with weapons, swords, bows and arrows and so on, I suppose because of the whole history of wars that we have inherited from many centuries ago.

I feel that we parents have a lot of responsibility in allowing children to play this kind of violent games, instead of giving them educational and recreational tools and means that are appropriate to their age.

We need as a society to overcome all these paradigms and learn to teach our children the path of peace and not that of war.
