New better?

People these days have a voracious appetite for new things and for more than they have - even if what they have is sufficient to perform the job or task it's supposed to.

The desire for new and more seems to drive people mad in a constant cycle of get something, get bored, want a new one, get a new one, get bored, want and new one, get a new one, get bored, want and new one, get a new one, get bored, want and new one, get a new one, get bored, want and new one, get a new one, get bored...well, I think you get the idea. People seem addicted to the process and in so doing can often acquire far more than they need and at a cost far more than they can afford and they push into the credit debt area.

I wonder though, is new always better?

Sure, I think new stuff can be nice and I have a load of new stuff. Is my new stuff better than the older stuff? Sometimes yes and sometimes no.

I guess my main focus is, do I need it or want it, and after making that determination and measuring up the thing against my budget I'll decide what I'll do. But generally, no I do not think a new thing is necessarily "better" than an old thing. It's all subjective and dependent upon the item or service.

That truck in the image has over a million kilometres on it...that's the second engine too - the first had over a million on it also. Could the operator buy a new one? Yes, he's got plenty of money. Does he need to? No he does not - the current one is still fit for purpose. I kind of like the way the guy thinks which is why we're friends I suppose. He figures that if it ain't broke why fix it, or get a new one.

Anyway, I wonder what you think.

Do you think new is better? Do you have a need over want buying methodology? What have you bought new and been disappointed with and why? Do you feel people fall needless into credit debt just to have new things? Do you feel comfortable with something that's not the latest thing?

Sort:

Not so much a 'new is better' sort here, though sometimes it is an upgrade and sometimes a necessity. I much prefer things from a time when items were built to last.

Take for instance that truck up top...It isn't as likely to crumple up like a tin can and can I say 'hubba hubba, look at that anti-protest device?' Yeah, love it

Getting new things, replacing the old, is inevitable but it's become somewhat of a past time these days and so many people hang their feelings of self worth and value on what they have rather than who they are which accelerates the situation. I mean, who would be caught dead with a silver iPhone when the new platinum version is out?

Assholes.

I have loads of new things, I buy them when I need them generally, but I buy for quality and longevity. Oh, and a popular brand name, let's call it Louis Vuitton, doesn't always make for a long lasting product. Just my opinion.

As for that bull bar...yeah, we do it fairly well here. Kangaroos, wild pigs, wombats, horses, camels, protestors and so on all add up to a heavy animal strike when on the open road so barwork is a necessity.

Moose Bumpers here they call em. Canadian/Northwest thing. My last trucks Dakota Hills Bumper had saved my hood from 3 seperate deer strikes and a jobsite caged generator that fell out of a pickup truck. No protesters or drunk drivers hit tho.

This newer truck will have one soon.

One Million miles... Wow. The best I've seen so far with me own eyes is a Great Wall Pick Up Truck with 700k km on it. First engine. Taxi driver. Instead of replacing that car, he overhauled another one and now his wife and son are in the business, too.

I rarely get new things. Maybe kitchen appliances. But those are mainly for work. And when it's really time for a new phone or laptop, I look for something as durable as the last. I rather spend a good amount once after research than going through the same process several times for not being thorough the first.

The buy once cry once ethos is the best I think. Buying twice (cheaper product and then a better quality one) makes no sense and usually costs more.

Exactly. When I started out, I didn't have the money to buy the good stuff (pans, containers, blenders), so I got the cheaper stuff and made the most of it. But as soon as I could, I bought the better quality. And some things just work forever. I have a fridge that I bought in combination with a washing machine for 150$ between the two. Both still work. Can't read anything on the washing machine anymore after 10 years, but that doesn't really matter - I know the function by heart now.

I tend towards better quality whether it's electrical tape from the hardware store or a vehicle. Yep, costs more but does the job as intended. Mostly.

Although, having said that, vehicles are becoming more and more shit. Even the "better quality" ones.

Yes, I noticed that. A friend of mine has a farm, and a harvester for that. It's around 40 years old, but every blacksmith can make most of the replacement parts easily. He hates and loves it, as it does break down regularly, but the new ones would be even worse as they break down, too, and then it takes weeks to get a specialist and even more for the specialized parts that can't be copied because the internal code recognizes un-authorized replacement parts. Because if quality, you know. They really just want to make sure that you have the best experience, and that means only their own expensive parts. If not, your vehicle could blow up. And we wouldn't want that, would we?

I'm one of those that buys new stuff only if it's that really necessary, new phone? When the old doesn't work... New car? Not until mine dies... Car is a good example that new isn't better, new cars ring if you go too fast over limits, they have stop and go by default enabled, they push you back on the middle if you go over the line if you surpass without using the light... All fucking annoying things for me, I want freedom not fucking rings and car that does what it wants

How nuts are cats these days, all the fucken beeping. Some beep if one takes hands off the wheel for two long or it thinks the driver is asleep...no long blinking of the eyes permitted. I rather a vehicle that lets me do the driving.

People say it's safer but I disagree, it's more distracting.

Besides, the road death toll steadily rises despite the implementation of these "safety measures" and speed limits being reduced. Sort of sounds like inattentive driving to me.

Humans are wankers.

a.i. is being integrated. This truck I have now has all that. It has between 50-75% error as far as I can tell in a month of driving it. Very disturbing how often it gets things completely wrong.

It dinged me for an unsafe lane change. So I guess I should hit whatever I am trying to avoid..? SMFH

It's pretty nuts to think that AI is driving for people (essentially) and those people who like it are even more fucken nuts.

Oh right the detector if you are tired, it rings when you are tired (???)... And the collision sensor, at totally random it started to ring and red everywhere, but there was absolutely nothing in front of the car

They tell me my car is old and I should change it, no way in hell

Yeah, I understand not wanting to change cars over because the new cars are annoying, not made as well and totally over priced.

Overpriced for sure, double than 10 years ago for the same car and hybrid are riducolously expensive

Since I am often in the technical field due to work, I would like to write a few words from that segment.

For me, a technique often has two states, from a binary system, it's either 1 (functioning) or 0 (not working).

There comes a time when the equipment needs to be renewed, but it is usually after the expected depreciation period has expired, and not when a new model has appeared.

Here is the recent situation of my colleague.
He had a great Iphone 15 Pro and he didn't listen to my suggestion to take the Iphone 17Pro (if he had already decided to throw money away. because the 15Pro is still great for him), but he wanted new, different, and bought an Iphone 17 Air and made a mistake.
After 3 months, he sold the 17Air for a lot less money and bought the 16 Pro...

A good example indeed.

I mean, new things, the latest things, are usually evolutions of their predecessors and are often better but not always.

New things are required, I buy new things all the time.

Example: Milk carton runs out, buy new one.

But people place their feelings of self worth on other people's perceptions of them and that often leads them into want-spending not need-spending. That's a slippery slope and can lead a person into buying new things when the old ones are sufficient to do the job. More shoes, new phone, new clothing, changing a car every 15 months and so on.

Just because a new one is released it doesn't mean a person has to have it.

I remember the video you shared more than a year ago: "Buy now".
Everything is said there.

Exactly.

Good memory you have there!

🙂

My memory serves me, especially for interesting and important facts.

I remember you're a car enthusiast. Take a look at my work today. I wonder what you think about what I had the opportunity to see 🙂

Buying something new for the sake of it being new seems kinda stupid and wasteful to me. But what do I know x_x

Yep indeed, and yet the vast majority of people do it.

I would feel uncomfortable with something that's not the latest but I won't be allowed to be control emotionally towards affecting my next strategy or decision. Now it might be a financial buoyancy option, maybe not being capable of getting latest product or if when gotten there's now disappointment on it servicablity. @galenkp well it is just unfortunate it shit happens. Create opportunity with it.

Whether you have the latest thing or not is besides the point in my opinion, what matters is the ability for that thing to perform its job.

That's a hard one because a lot of the newer stuff just isn't built to last, so even though you might want to keep using the same thing forever, they just don't make it that way. You find yourself buying new not because it is better, but because it is necessary. I don't like buying stuff to begin with really, so any chance I can to use something older that I already have is a win for me.

It's very much a throwaway society; the really sad and pathetic thing is people seem happy to throw away perfectly good things just because they want a new one not because they need it.

For sure!

New stuff just does not seem to last. I really like some of the good old fashion gear that was built to last but of course there is nothing wrong with a new thing or two! especially with all the new fast-moving tech that can save a lot of time.

I'm not that much into new "time saving" tech. I prefer to do things the good old fashioned at where possible I guess.

Wow for me I absolutely desire new stuffs. Because when ever I got new stuff it's always perfect, but about old stuff they are very problematic just like the old phone I bought from my brother I didn't enjoyed it at all.

New stuff can be good indeed.
