Buffaloland: Calves

Yesterday I stopped at Buffaloland to see how the calves, born in the spring, were doing.

There were a lot of people who had pulled into Buffaloland as the buffalo were close to the fence by the highway and could be seen better. Children were excited to see the buffalo up close.

The buffalo are amazing wild animals of nature with the hump on their backs, the chin goatees and the tuffs of hair on their legs. They may look fierce but they are gentle giants and normally would only attack to protect the young.

Another amazing fact is the oldest female is the leader of the herd. If she dies than the next oldest female takes over.

The bulls and females try to protect the young calves by keeping them inside their circle.

These calves have lost the orange color of their fur coat and taken on the reddish brown color of the older buffalo.

If you are wondering what the buffalo to the right is doing on the ground, He may have a itchy back and rolling around in the dirt to relief the itch

This is the color of the calves when they are first born and they maintain the orange color for a few months.

Last year there were 58 head in the herd but with the new calves I think there are about 65 buffalo.

I’ve mentioned the story before of how the province of Alberta send PEI a male and female buffalo and from those two this herd developed.

At one time the herd was culled and the meat sold as a way to keep the herd under control. Since the Buddhist have taken over the care of the herd, they were having the bulls sterilized rather than culled.

The story goes that one big bull could not be tranquilized to be sterilized and he is fathering all the new calves.

It is nice to see the new calves every spring as long as Buffaloland Park can maintain the expanding herd. They all look to be in good shape.

Always wonderful to see nature flourishing in regions they have been for years, humans culled their numbers down to frighteningly low numbers.

Babies do look healthy and happy, thanks for sharing Buffalo when seeing them Jo.

Welcome Joan. It does my heart good to see the buffalo striving and in good health. So many terrible injustices done to these majestic animals they were almost eradicated from the earth in the later 1800s.

Thanks so much for your generosity with tip and beer. ❤️

Too many animals paying the ultimate toll for human stupidity, have a great day Jo.

Terrific post and photos Jo!! The calves are so adorable and remind me of baby cows. The buffalo are just so cool looking and I'm glad you got to visit and get photos of all of them! 💖

Thanks Pix. I’m always grateful for your support.❤️

These exact species are missing here.. here we find buffaloes but with no fur.

The calves look so cute while the mother look very wild and fierce of course 😀

Thanks @razeiv. Each country seems to have a different version of animals. I guess because of the different climate.

A buffalo here with no fur would be mighty cold during our winters.

Right Jo! .. mother nature is truly amazing! :))

I think we have been talking about this lucky and happy bull a while ago 😉
It's good to see the calves are doing well and that you sometimes have a look at them, Jo, these are powerful and great looking animals 😊

Morning Hannes, 😊

I hadn’t stopped in awhile to check on the buffalo. The herd looks to be increasing quite a bit. I love seeing them and the calves.

The lucky bull must still be there with all the new calves born each year. 😊

Thanks so must for reblog, tip and goodies dear Hannes.🤗

Have a wonderful Thorsday! We are scheduled to have rain or next few days.

Good morning Jo,

it's always nice to see the young calves - we only have ordinary cow calves here, but they are lovely too, although not so special as the Buffalos are 😀

It is dry here today and the weatherman said the sun will Shine all day Long. I believed him and was riding to work on my motorbike this morning - 4 C was quite cold, but I have only 10 km to work, so it's not that bad. Hopefully it will get warmer in the afternoon ;)

My day is going to be quite busy, but will run very fast because of that 😃
I hope the rain will not be too bad nd you'll have a great Thor's day too, dear Jo 🤗

PS: don't forget the V 😉

Hi Hannes,😊

It’s been raining here steadily all morning at 13C and no let up in sight.

You are 10 km from work- that is exactly the distance from this house to the town of Montague. Just a nice 6 or 7 minute drive. You would have much more traffic than here.

Have a wonderful day dear Hannes.🤗

Hi Jo,

thanks a lot for the good wishes, we are having a wonderful day indeed. The sun is shining and it has 17 C. Tomorrow should be even warmer 😃
For next week they predict rain though 🌧️

The ride or drive to and from work takes about 10 - 15 minutes. I begin to work at 6 and at this time there's not much going on on the streets ☺️

I hope your weather gets better for the weekend and you have a nice day even if it rains today, dear Jo 🤗

Afternoon Johann, 😊

The morning was dreary but sun shining and lots of wind now.

Not much going on except I have been working on being a curator for the Amazing Nature Community but am finding it hard switching users and getting back to my own a/c. . So I don’t know if it will work out for me.

I hope Frigg’s day is going great for you dear Hannes.😊🤗

Hi Jo 😊

That's why I don't take other job offers, because I have enough to do with myself 😉
Seriously, I wouldn't find the time, but I am sure you are doing a great curating job 😁

We had some morning mist at the lake, but then the sun came out and the day became nice and friendly. The whole weekend will be nice, says the weatherman. I'm working tomorrow but I hope he's right for Sunday 🙂

I hope the wind blows itself somewhere over the sea and you'll get a wonderful weekend, dear Jo 🤗🌞

They really are beautiful these Buffalo's they look like the elite type top of the class amazing features 👍

Thanks @kohsamui99. Yes they beautiful and top of the line buffalo.😀

They were interesting to look at we don't have them here in down under land 😁

Hahaha, the buffalo has most resourceful scratching ideas. What in the world would we do without arms? I don't think it is something that I would like to think about @redheadpei!

Thanks Angie!. Yes I have to feel sorry for animals without arms to have a good scratch. 😀’

I knew a lady who had shortened arms. they were just hands attached to her shoulders. I don’t know how she combed her hair or wiped her bum.

This short arms or legs condition was caused by pregnant women taking the drug thalidomide in the late 50’s and early 60s. It was touted as a miracle drug to help with morning sickness and depression. Eventually the medical profession found it had caused over 10, 000 of these birth defects in babies born of women who used this drug.

Yep, I remember this terrible drug that woman took unwittingly ignorant of the huge consequences on their children. Thalidomide affected so many.

We had a child with shortened arms during my work time and was not through thalidomide. He was a very bright boy but so disadvantaged in all areas you mentioned. I hope he has achieved in life. Blessings
