We bit off more than we can chew and now we are in trouble

in ASEAN HIVE COMMUNITY3 years ago

Our financial woes continue and unfortunately we let our sense of duty and compassion get in the way of sensibility when we took on 5 new cancer cases in the past month and now our already "strapped for cash" situation is even more dire.

We probably should have just continued to focus on sterilizations in retrospect, but it seemed like a good idea at the time to help these dogs that are riddled with cancer. I would imagine in other countries they would probably just euthanize the animals in order to save money but this situation makes me think about how wonderful it would be if we just had tons of money and could do whatever we wanted with it. Wouldn't that be amazing?

Two of the cancer dogs we are treating right now actually ended up in here for other reasons. One for a sterilization and of course the usual parasite infestation that almost all street dogs in Thailand have, the other for a broken leg. We discovered that they also had cancer when the vet was performing her procedures on them. We took on the added responsibility of helping them with their chemotherapy treatments and I guess it just became our new project - one that I am now regretting taking on because we simply can't afford it.

We already started this first wave and unfortunately after that we are going to have to turn away any potential cancer treatments because, and it pains me to say this, it is too expensive and we have to focus on the mountains that we are actually capable of climbing.

A sterilization, vaccination, and anti-parasite treatment combo will end up costing us less than $40 total and can be done in a day in a half without extensive boarding. Chemotherapy treatment requires up to 6 weeks of boarding as well as weekly injections. This ends up costing us over $250 in the end and even though we don't to do it, we have to look at this from a financial feasibility point of view.

We simply can not afford to treat these animals no matter how sick they are.

It's all very saddening because before Covid shut the world down we had so many tourists wanting to volunteer that we had to turn people away and our donation boxes and bi-weekly fundraiser events were always packed. These days, we are basically operating off of scraps and donations from several small and medium sized business donors who honestly, probably can't really afford to help us because of Covid cutting into their own profitability anyway. I can't even imagine what we will do if we lose those guys as well.

In the meantime we will continue to do the best that we can but we need to think a bit harder before we attempt to take on projects like this in the future. We would love to save them all, but unfortunately we are going to have to pick and choose which dogs and cats we are going to help from this point forward. It has become necessary.

I encourage anyone reading this to get involved with an animal rescue / shelter in your local community... either with your money, or your time. Also, please encourage everyone to adopt rather than buy animals. If we work together we can help so many animals in the world.

Yes all of what is going on right now is unfortunate. The local animal rescue here in DaNang basically has the same story that you are talking about and I do what I can to help them. Have you heard of Paws for Compassion? They seem to be quite active here in DaNang.

I have heard of Paws for Compassion and spoke to them on a somewhat regular basis before the lockdown. We hope to do some sort of joint project once borders open back up again. I hope you help them out if you have time, they are good people.

I've been so focused on how Covid had destroyed the tourism sector of chiang Mai so much that I hadn't even thought about this. I would imagine there are similar stories all around the world. Tragic. I'll see if I can organize some sort of fundraiser with the Hash up here.

I'm very sad to hear of the situation but still happy you managed to save a few more sick dogs even if it does come at a price to others, don't forget you got Hive Buck Dollars that you could trade for money the price as gone up lately so that helps, I just really don't recommend selling your Hive.

i might end up doing some of that very soon. It could really help us through the lean times like this.

Of course I'm sorry to hear of your struggles. I'll send something to your wallet and Up my delegation to you as well. Hopefully other Hive members will assist your organization in the fine work done for the animals in need.

Ciao

I hope you are able to find some additional funding, but I can only imagine how difficult it is to find sponsors during this global economic downturn.
