It's been a drag

in LEGO3 years ago

I wrote about taking my Lego Technic models apart and rebuilding them into other things a little while ago. I'd thought long and hard about it and was comfortable with the decision; I'm running out of room to store them and also figured rebuilding them into other things would give me additional value from the, not insignificant, cost of these Lego sets. I took the first one to my Lego work bench, more commonly known as the dining room table and proceeded to...procrastinate. Needless to say, no dismantling was done.

That was weeks ago and since then...I'm sad to say all of my Lego Technic sets have been dismantled...and if you believe that you're a nutbag!

One has been deconstructed and, painful as it was, the several thousand pieces been sorted into the individual colours and bagged up in clear zip-lock bags ready for reconstruction at some later date. It wasn't easy to do; deconstructing it was, but actually starting the process was difficult. It happened though, and I'll get onto the next one shortly.

I've been reviewing the options as far as what I'll build the set into but nothing has captured my interest yet so the search continues and all will be revealed in due course.

I also did a stocktake on what unbuilt Lego Technic I had laying around the place and found a couple of small sets, similar to the drag car pictured above. This is one of them below, a pull-back model meaning it has a little motor that drives it when wound up (by pulling it backwards). It's not a large set like the one I've just taken apart, (some 4,000 pieces), but will be fun to build and, because it's a 2-in-1 set, I'll be able to pull it apart and rebuild it for double the fun. The good thing is that it's a fairly small set so won't take up much room. I'm just trying to make myself feel better here, because taking my Lego Technic apart has been a drag!

The whole idea behind taking some of my build Technic sets apart was to get better value from them, double value, by building them into other things. It's a legit plan and with space constraints makes a lot of sense over buying new ones. Some of the models are up to metre long so it makes it difficult to find places to put them. Honestly, I'm not too upset about taking them apart, it's just been a bit sad considering how much time and effort goes into putting them together. I'll cope though...maybe I'll have some counselling...or some snacks, that's sure to perk me up. Or...maybe I'll just buy more.

Buy more with a shipping container to put them in, with good lighting at the assembly bench!

Everyone should have fun at something! I prefer erector sets, but they are getting Hard to find; so I just build the needed components in the machine shop.

No room for shipping containers, so deconstruction is the plan.

Yeah, Meccano is cool fun. I never owned my own as a kid, but I used to play with some a kid in the street had. I really liked it. It's still available as far as I know.

I spent many a fun hour building with them!

Now I make stuff out of steel, brass, and aluminum. Some cast, some machined; but I enjoy making things even today!

I got calls from a company I haven't worked at in 6 years...red tags everywhere!
IMG_20230328_160311083.jpg
Here's why! This was a neat wiring harness last time I worked on it!

IMG_20230328_145221707.jpg
And this is a 3500 gallon tank of saturated cyanide...but I got them running again. The rectifier driving it was one of my full rebuilds from about 8 years ago, and still running smoothly!

They cut on my RT shoulder yesterday, and seems to have done a good job. But I'll need to shoot southpaw for a while with the bigger stuff. Sorry there's not enough room for a container! But you play the hand you're dealt. I need to add another, and roof between for a shop building.

Hope it's good down under! Be blessed.

Electrical wiring spaghetti. It looks like someone went bonkers. I assume you fixed it up.

Got it it is running, but they didn't want me to clean it up right...needed production. Explains a lot about the red tags I saw decorating equipment all over the place. It may be more work than I want....

Haha! Maybe I'll just buy more. Now that sounds more feasible. I am always amazed that these toys were built for children 7 and above. I have seen some of those and I am not sure some of the seven-year-olds I have seen have the dexterity to put them together.

I believe they had adults in mind all along.

I am not sure I would be capable of tearing it down after spending all that time putting it together. Do you always demolish them or do they normally just live there with you? You know you can always build an addition.

I hope all is well in your world this afternoon!

Hi, Galen!

Hmm, maybe they want adults to feel seven years old? I'm not sure, although I agree with you, some of these sets are rather advanced for the littlun's.

So, usually I leave them all built but I'm running out of room to put them so I had to make a decision. It's ok though, I'm throwing them out (of course), I'll rebuild them and keep them and maybe deconstruct again and rebuild them once more. Or...maybe I'll go and buy more! Lol.

Haven't things really changed? When I was a kid, which is many years ago, things were not nearly as complicated at that level. Some of those lego sets are using more brain cells than I possess on some days.

Dedication to the craft. You will never grow up/old.

I went riding this morning. Such a nice day to do it.

signal-2023-03-23-09-51-17-250.jpg

The world is far more complicated than it needs to be. I don't like that.

I'm jealous, I'd like a ride today too!

Yes, it was one of those perfect days for riding. He needed a good brushing. Just look at his face! He is starting to shed out his winter coat. Although, he didn't need one of those this year.

They like a good brushing don't they? And an apple or two.

I like apples too, in an apple crumble served with vanilla ice cream.

There you go! I think you and Henry would get along marvelously. He likes anything apple.

While I was kid I spent so much time on Lego technic, Meccano and so on. I also built some models of BBurago, models of Ferrari F430 and a Jaguar (since my father is deeply passionate about Jaguar cars).
I think that all of this building and rebuilding led me to become an Engineer 🤣🤣

It's a pretty good hobby I think and develops creativity, persistence and is simply good fun. I think I'll keep building Lego for a long time to come, I don't see why I shouldn't.

Oh I dread taking Lego technic apart, it fits so tightly that it can be quite the mission to get all the pieces to seperate....
I think building them is a lot more fun haha, but I am also running out of space!

It's not as fun for sure! Sometimes they get stuck and won't budge. I have a pair of plastic pliers for when that happens. I found them in a toy shop as part of a kids tool set. They work perfectly; just enough clamping force, but not enough to damage the plastic.

There are several websites with ideas for things to build with spare parts. Several YouTube channels too. You might try browsing these if you are looking for ideas.

This guy's channel has some amazing constructions: https://www.youtube.com/c/JKBrickworksVideo

I believe I've seen him mention that Lego has accepted some of his ideas for sets, if that tells you his skill level.

I fancy this one:

Simple yet impressive to look at, as tensegrity structures always are. I haven't been able to find the parts I need for it from all the spare parts my kids have so I may get around to ordering them one of these days.

I've already got the plans for what I'll be building, I purchased them online. There will be a big reveal...if the set works. Because I'll not mix my sets up I have to find new designs that utilise only the one set. Most of mine have more than 4,000 pieces so are usually reworked into some pretty cool things.

When I collected Kinder Surprise toys, my most favourite were the vehicles that had pull back fly wheels in them. I was always amazed at what those toy engineers could fit into the middle of a chocolate egg.

You're reminding me here that I have about four sets of Legos that still need attention. Oy. They're still lonely in their unopened boxes.

Get those Lego sets done man, doesn't it bug you that they're just sitting there? I think Saturday night should be pizza and Lego night this weekend for you.

Chocolate eggs huh? I might have just had two. It's Easter after all, or will be at some stage. Lol.

Haha, yes, this weekend might be the best weekend for it! Pizza and lego really does sound like a good combination.

I am in favor of snacks and above all of buying other models.

I don't know about you, but for me Lego is like Vegemite...pure drug!!!

For now I don't need it but in the future if needed I will buy a garage to make a museum of my legos but never disassemble!
At home I have a spare room I was thinking of organizing it as a Lego room ... but I think the time will come when that space will not be enough lol!

Vegemite, Lego, boobs, Italian food...there's so many addictive drugs right? Lol.

I had thought I'd be ok with all the Lego around the place but it's getting to the point where it's just too much. I'd like to have a room dedicated to it like some do but I have other hobbies and need room for those, my books for instance. It's ok though, I've made peace with it.

You know, a great man once said:

One must know when to construct and know when to deconstruct; Lego is life but fucking hell it takes up a lot of room.

It's a wise saying, don't you think? 🤣

Heh heh yes it really is a wise saying!

Mmmm actually I hadn't thought about my other passions... I think I'll need quite a lot of bookstores too.
I'll have to take an industrial warehouse I guess lol!

I could create a special space with a lego museum and library accessible to all for free use for books... for legos as the roof says: "you look but don't touch".

You gave me a good idea, when I'm old and rich I'll think about it, a nice space could come out of it for young people.

I keep noticing that he has more and more passions that unite us; at this point I would always say long live the boobs!
But also long live vegemite!🤤🤤🤤

I hope you become rich and make your idea a reality!

Eh eh let's hope, then to carry out certain projects you don't necessarily have to be rich, right?😉

It takes a lot of time to build and a short time to dismantle. I know how you feel about dismantling them and it is definitely for better reasons.

Recently, the government demolished some buildings in my area due to a road project going on. It affected lots of people and they were sad about it but some of them didn't feel bad too much because of the value and development the road was going to add to the community.

Obtaining value sometimes comes with some inconvenient decisions but in the end, we will definitely be happy we made the decision.

I like your comment about inconvenient decisions, and the road thing is a good example. Human's don't always like change so resist it or the new thing that comes along. I've done so with my Lego decision just the residents did with the road you mentioned.

Yeah that’s always the problem with things like that! It’s so fun to put them together but what do you do at the end of the day having dozens or more of the sets around the house. Gotta do something else with them or sell them sadly!

I'll give them all to my niece and nephew when they're old enough, that's why I'll not sell them. But yeah, I'm running out of room so deconstructing them and packing them away or rebuilding them into other things is the way to go.

I love Legos... From my desk I am looking at the old boxes with my legos that have been with me for more than 45 years... They are obviously disassembled, they are in simple plastic boxes, there must be thousands of pieces... My son played with them (My son today is 33 years old) but now he lives in another country, but even my little grandson when I came to visit us, he also played with those Legos... I loved reading your article, even if it is about having to " deconstruct them"... Surely it will occur to you to put some back together... Thanks for sharing...

I can't recall at what age I began playing with Lego but it would have been before I was four years old, almost 50 years ago, and here I am still doing it. It's one of those things that seems to capture a person and not let them go. It's timeless fun I believe, and because fun is not exclusive to children, why nit right?

You are right, maybe one of these days I will take my sets out of those old boxes and decide to assemble something... Thank you very much for answering my comment, today has not been an easy day and this makes me happy!... A hug for you, @galenkp my friend!...

I'm sorry to hear your day wasn't so good and hope you next ones make up for it. Maybe it's a perfect time to do some Lego building to take your mind of things for a while. Good luck.

I read the title and wondered if you had surreptitiously discovered the topic of the post I am currently working on... Yeah, I know, took me bloody long enough... I don't even know where to start on that one... Life, NEVER boring...

Then I realised we were talking about different types of drag.

I swear there is an extremely sensible(ish) reason for this abomination!

Hope life is treating you and yours well G-dog. Catch up soon mate :)

Yeah, the word drag relates to drag racing, referring to the drag car in the image. The other sort of drag? Not my thing for many reasons. Point in case the hideous image above. That post of yours is sure to be interesting though, I'll keep an eye out for it.
