Where did all the developers go?

in GEMS4 years ago

EOS and a couple other projects see huge drops in developer activity...

Is the coronavirus pandemic impacting more industries than we initially expected, or are people just moving on from some projects?

EOS was hailed at being the Ethereum killer.

It was supposed to do everything that Ethereum can do, but better.

That is all well and good except that the developer activity is falling off a cliff for EOS...

The following is the percentage change in developers building on each project over the last 12 months:

(Source: https://outlierventures.io/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/OV-Blockchain-Dev-Q2-2020-4.pdf)

As you can see, EOS has seen a decline of more than 80% in developer activity in the last 12 months.

EOS may be in trouble...

Supporters of EOS will likely say that they launched their main net roughly a year ago, so the development activity they were seeing at that time was unusually high.

And when you start from an unusually high number, of course the numbers are going to look bad as they regress more towards the mean...

However, that isn't entirely the case...

EOS has continued to see less and less developer activity basically month by month...

Apart from one brief spike back in August of last year, it's basically been down every single month.

That isn't what you want to see from an investor point of view and doesn't inspire confidence in terms of the possibility of long term value creation.

The bummer in all of this is that they only included the Top 12 projects in those rankings above...

It would be interesting to see where HIVE stacks up.

Yes, HIVE is new and there was a ton of excitement surrounding it right out of the gate, but I also have a feeling it will continue to see a lot development even as the months drag on.

There is a lot more info regarding the development activities surrounding these 12 projects and worth the read if you get the chance.

The report can be found here:

Stay informed my friends.

I'm still here. Time to checkout cosmos and polkadot to see why all the devs are going there.

While you are there, tell em to come over to HIVE, we have tons of room for growth.

I'll bring them to the place to be.

this post is very interesting.

I never got into EOS, though I did notice how every other guy was talking about it a year ago, but no one talks about that blockchain now... It'll really be interesting to see how HIVE will look into a graph like that.

I got an account aice January 2020 and it still doesn’t work.

On Voice?

On Eos, I got no more EOS to buy CPU and RAM... EOS it seems to me that is a blockchain for rich

Agreed. Hopefully a year from now we have significantly more development than we have right now.

I don’t Know what are Cosmos and Poldkast. while I am not surprised by EOS. Eos is overrated in my opinion.

Yea it was pretty much priced to perfection right out of the gate, any hiccups and it corrects.

So far at least, we're seeing quite a few interesting projects having started, or have moved to Hive. I won't be surprised if we'd see Hive make it into the Top 12 within the next year. I don't know much about EOS, hasn't Steem's founder been busy over there? I believe they were planning some sort of Twitter-ish kind of platform there, though I could've mixed it up with something else.

They launched Voice recently, which was supposed to be a steemit killer and take on the facebook's of the world. I haven't heard much about it since it went live though. Anyone have any experience with it?

Ah yes, I've heard of Voice. More than that, I even registered to be a part of the closed beta. It looks like an interesting concept, so I thought I'd see what's what. I still haven't heard back, and it's been 3 months.

It went live didn't it?

I don't think so. On the website, it says here to "Get Started", but clicking it reveals that I have to 'Request Access'. I still haven't received the email from them yet. Not sure if this problem is just limited to me, though.

Thousands have been attracted by https://blockstack.org/
Look at all the dapps which have been build in few months:

Thanks for the info. Good stuff. Though that doesn't change the data much showing that year over year many of the top projects are seeing less activity.

It's just fud tho by an ethereum funded group. There is heaps of activity going on in eos/eosio. Here is a link that was easily found to respond, but unfortunately fud perceptions, mud, it's can stick eventually.

Well the report didn't look too favorably on Ethereum either...

Super excited for HIVE developments.

I’m grateful for all our hard working developers within our HIVE ecosystem

Yes same here. Though we really could use adding some new developers to the pond that aren't already here... ones with some fresh ideas and hopefully resources.

Let's keep on building our HIVE ecosystem and they'll come :)

I agree that development seems to be going quite slow on EOS but it still continues. Voice will be rolled out to more people in the next month or so and infrastructure continues to improve.
I know Dan Larimar is a polarising figure but he seems to be one of the smarter developers in blockchain. Wanting to bridge the gap between blockchain and traditional industry is a very slow process especially when it comes to legal concerns. If they can walk that tight rope and succeed EOS could really take off.

Are you currently using Voice? What is it like?

No. I am Irish so it has not been released here yet. I have heard some mixed reports but am very excited to try it out. The game theory behind post rewards sounds interesting.

Maybe dan is going to announce a new project it's been a while

He is about due isn't he...

Must be a paid FUD article. No way ETH development fell. I doubt those EOS numbers too.

It's a report more than an article. Check it out if you are curious how they came up with the data. If you look at the report, they also have charts in terms of numbers of new commits, and those graphs look a little different. Though EOS is still way down.

Hive is quite new. I also do believe it will develop because of its potential.
Thank you for informing us. I'll stay tuned till your next post
