I ate fried scorpion at Khaosan Road

Khaosan road is one of the busiest roads in Bangkok and is popular because of the cheap hotels, stores, and booze. It's popular for backpackers. I think I can compare it to Bangla road in Phuket except in Bangla there are more activities there than here.

I haven't been to Khaosan road during the day but upon researching it, there are lots of stores that are open selling some Thailand stuff. But at night, the road is closed to cars and so it becomes a road of PARTY.

Upon entering the road, you will find yourself literally surrounded by music. Each bar has their own music so they can be really loud and sometimes you don't even know where exactly the sound is coming from cos they're all mixed up lol.

IMG_7713.jpg

There are tables outside which are more fun than being inside the bars cos you can see people walking by and you can dance together. :D It can get really packed at 10pm onwards, which is more fun than being confined in a small place.

IMG_7716.jpg

They serve different cocktails here but serving in buckets is popular here. I was actually shocked to see a whole bucket for what I thought would be a small drink for me. I was like "how tf am I gonna be able to finish this???". In the end, @acidyo and I were able to finish 2 buckets at this place and I don't even know how that happened. XD

Laughing gas is very popular here in Khaosan Road. They basically fill the ballon with nitrous oxide and when you inhale it, you will experience a euphoric feeling - which is why it's called laughing gas. Most tourists and party-goers use this and it's like 250 baht per 10 balloons I think.

I have tried it for the first time and I didn't like it. It gave me a really bad rush in my head, made me laugh a bit but I felt dizzy so I didn't wanna try it again. Well, of course, it should be illegal right? Laughing gas apparently isn't a laughing matter for the police. :P

There are also vendors who sell snacks that you could eat while drinking. One of it was this dried cuttlefish.

IMG_8786.jpg

This was sweet dried fish that I ordered along with the dried cuttlefish.

IMG_8790.jpg

He had to flatten it again before putting it on the fire.

It was a nice snack especially for those who love dried seafood but I can't stand it now anymore. Even just smelling it... cos I had a really bad hangover after this night to the point where @acidyo was already considering sending me to the hospital since I won't stop vomiting at the hotel. :P I was able to recover after a day tho. XD

IMG_7712.jpg

And of course, there are some fried exotic foods. :P

IMG_7731.jpg

There are scorpions, crickets, cockroaches, tarantulas, worms, and small frogs... Of course they are safe to eat, but just it makes you think it's disgusting considering they're insects. :D

IMG_7732.jpg

But then I was like "what's the point of going to Thailand if I'm not gonna try their exotic foods?" so I tried the scorpion for the lulz.

IMG_0710.jpg

Tbh I was kinda brave since I drank a bit of alcohol so I was like not really caring, just curious on how it would taste like. I couldn't describe the taste exactly, but it was just like a fried something. It doesn't really taste anything and I have nothing to compare it with. Surprisingly, I finished them all even the butt and thankfully there wasn't any goo coming out of it else I would probably freak out. :P

IMG_0714.jpg

I also tasted a fried cricket and it was more tasty than the scorpion I guess cos the lady put some pepper on it. :P

After the scorpion, it made my mouth itchy. Like the insides of it - tongue and back of my throat. I asked the lady and she said it's not supposed to itch. So my best guess was I'm having a mild allergic reaction (cos I think maybe cos I'm also allergic to shrimp and they're kinda same dunno lol) but thankfully I didn't have to drink antihistamines. I just drank water and after 30 minutes or so, it went away.

IMG_7735.jpg

The tarantulas didn't look as tasty as scorpions because of their large butts. :P

Going to Khaosan road was a nice experience and I recommend you to visit when you're in Bangkok. There are some other vendors that sell foods like fruit shakes, rice porridge, kebabs, and other shits but I wasn't able to take photographs since we were there to party. XD

Well done! I haven't tried scorpion or spider but I'm pretty sure I'd be able to do it for fun... like, once, while probably making a big deal over it...

No harm with the experience anyway! (as long as you know they're safe to eat and not some random venomous one lol)

Hahaha, whatever doesn't kill you only makes you spew a lot.

All this is not something I would prefer. It's a little bit... Disgusting. Just my opinion, no offense

To be fair, it is. I don’t even know how I ate the butt hahah but I did. There wasn’t even other tourists trying it out, just us. XD

It is not a surprise for me 😐

LOL, I dont think I would have eaten those scorpions. I have had crickets before and they aren't too bad. Khaoson Road is one of those places that I wish my wife and I had made it to, but we didn't stay in Bangkok too long because we headed to Pattaya instead. I definitely want to go to this place on our next visit and really see more of the tourist night life.

It was crazy in here. I even saw one who was vomiting on the street drainage, probably had a lot of buckets lol. I also like the outfits of the party goers - photographing would be nice in here

O wow… you were definitely brave.
Sorry to hear you were not feeling that well. Luckily you recovered soon.
Have a wonderful Sunday 👋🏻😊

Yes thankfully my body just told the alcohol to gtfo my system quick! It did what it had to do. :D Thank you!

Good to hear!
You are welcome 😊👋🏻

Sooooo, it happened here. The scorpion thing 😱
And yes, I see what helped you to try it 😁
Sorry that the whole experience finished with almost you going to the hospital, but eventually you didn't have to go. Anyway, it was a unique food adventure, right? 😉

Yeah it was definitely my first hangover! I just didn't notice the amount of alcohol I took and also I have low tolerance since I don't drink. :D Thankfully I was able to remove all those toxins from my body and even my dinner lol so I was fine. :D

It was definitely something, although for sure there are far more extreme exotic foods in Thailand that are even more unique. :D

although for sure there are far more extreme exotic foods in Thailand that are even more unique. :D

More extreme than trying a scorpion, cricket or a tarantula? Hahaha, ok, ok, I believe you but will try not to imagine what it would be ☺️

{Don't tell me :D}

Good that your body could fight it, it was the natural reaction that it took to shake you back to the normal shape. Well, even if it means the dinner also went away 😉

Ooook, if this is not a gastronomic adventure then what is it? Alcohol surely helped, but it also needs some guts to do it :))
Fried crickets look like kindergarten after the scorpion :))
Glad you enjoyed your night and glad you are ok now after that difficult following day.

You know what, I think I was "brave" only because we have exotic foods here as well. Like balut and chicken intestines (and feet lol). There are some other extremes however, like insects, but I haven't tried them (yet?). So trying out an insect is probably not that far from exotic foods mentioned that I eat (and enjoy). :D

Thank you, yeah it was my first hangover ever! :D

Yes, you are probably right. You do have a very interesting cuisine! You were well prepared :)
I think I would like to try some of these delicacies, except from the balut!!! Saw it in a documentary as a teenager and took me a looong time to eat an egg again without thinking of it, lol. But you know how these things go, some day you try it and then it becomes your favorite (although I have serious doubts about the balut, haha).

Wish you lots of gastronomic experiences, without the hangover :)

OMG you are so brave!! I don’t like these pictures to be honest, lol (the tarantulas and scorpions photos). It’s extremely disgusting to see the scorpions and the spiders ready to be eaten, but because I don’t like at all those insects. Anyway the heading of your post definitely called my attention, and yes… you are very very brave!! Thank God nothing goo came out of the scorpion!!

The rest of the Kahosan street looks very cool!

Hahaha yeah I can imagine the tarantula still moving and crawling on my skin eeewww. Hahah the goo was probably solidified as it was fried enough XD I remember splitting the scorpion butt in two (I didn't care, I had alcohol hahah) but it looks like it just solidified like I said. XD It's less disgusting that way hahah

Only tried the scorpion too for the sake of trying! 😆 Do they still ask people to pay additional 10 baht for taking photos of those exotic food?

No they didn't! Did they ask you? :o I just took photos and there was no complaint lol. Did your mouth itch after trying the scorpion?

You seem like you had fun😂😂. Don't think any amount of alcohol can make me eat scorpion 😂😂

It's nice to see it getting busier again down there. The wife and I often have a ride down for a night out but usually end up chilling out on Rambuttri, the next street across. In the old days, it was the place to go for fake driving licenses and degrees to get teaching jobs lol

But wait, weren't you staying in nice hotels during your trip here? I thought it was illegal to go to Khao San unless you hadn't showered for a week, were staying in a 200baht a night hostel and dressed like you were homeless! You're gentrifying Khao San you traitors!

I love how much you loved it here. Get an education visa the pair of you and move over here.

As for eating the scorpions....I'd rather starve but if you ever visit Samui, I'll get you some fresh ones from the garden :-)

thought it was illegal to go to Khao San unless you hadn't showered for a week,

Really?? I never actually stumbled upon ragged-looking people haha actually they're on their party outfits, which was cool! Maybe times have changed and after pandemic people learned how to shower 😂

Hahah yeah we loved it and I still have a few Thailand posts to make, then it's done :'( I'd rather starve as well than experiencing that uncomfortable itch again!

Oh, there was a lot of scorpiones!

I was really questioning the decision that lead me to witness you eating those things. :p

Yeah I saw that on video
