Cuando te encuentras muy cerca de alguna frontera con otro país, la curiosidad gana, hay que ver qué hay del otro lado, al menos a mí me pasa, así que en esta cuarta parte de mi viaje por el estado Amazonas, Venezuela, los invito a conocer Casuarito, en Colombia.
After walking in the morning through the city of Puerto Ayacucho, capital of the Amazonas state, at noon we went to the pier to take a boat, cross the Orinoco River and arrive at Casuarito.
Después de pasear en la mañana por la ciudad de Puerto Ayacucho, capital del estado Amazonas, al mediodía nos fuimos al muelle para tomar una embarcación, cruzar el río Orinoco y llegar a Casuarito.
We made a small line, bought the ticket and went down to the river bank to get on the covered boat, before they gave us some life jackets. The trip is short, just 10 minutes separate Venezuela and Colombia in this part of the border.
Hicimos una pequeña cola, compramos el pasaje y bajamos hasta la orilla del río para subir a la lancha techada, antes nos dieron unos salvavidas. El viaje es corto, apenas 10 minutos separan a Venezuela y Colombia en esta parte de la frontera.
When we arrived we waited for a while at the pier while Douglas went to buy some chocolate covered cakes for everyone, which we ate while we began to tour the place.
Al llegar esperamos un rato en el muelle mientras Douglas fue a comprar unos ponqués cubiertos de chocolate para todos, los cuales fuimos comiendo mientras comenzamos a recorrer el lugar.
Casuarito is a small town or rather a hamlet with about 900 inhabitants, dedicated mostly to commerce. In its streets, about six, there are many stores of food, clothing, shoes, leather goods, handicrafts, medicines, restaurants, among other shops.
Casuarito es un pueblo pequeño o más bien un caserío con unos 900 habitantes, dedicado más que todo al comercio. En sus calles, unas seis, hay muchas tiendas de alimentos, ropa, zapatos, artículos de cuero, artesanías, medicinas, restaurantes, entre otros comercios.
As I read, this place was founded in 1930 as a commissary district, apart from that there is very little information about its history.
Según leí, este lugar fue fundado en 1930 como corregimiento comisarial, aparte de eso hay muy poca información sobre su historia.
It is more related to Venezuela because it is closer to it, since Puerto Carreño, capital of the Vichada department, of which Casuarito is part, is about 40 minutes by road, while Puerto Ayacucho in Venezuela, is only 10 minutes across the Orinoco River. People come and go according to their needs, both Venezuelans and Colombians cross the border daily.
Se relaciona más con Venezuela porque está más cerca de ella, ya que Puerto Carreño, capital del departamento de Vichada, del cual forma parte Casuarito, está a unos 40 minutos de carretera, mientras que Puerto Ayacucho en Venezuela, está a sólo 10 minutos cruzando el río Orinoco. La gente va y viene según las necesidades que tenga, tanto venezolanos como colombianos cruzan la frontera a diario.
For example, more than a decade ago, as we were told, when Venezuela's currency, the bolívar, was much stronger than the Colombian peso, Casuarito's economy was supported more than anything by its neighbors, who crossed to buy all kinds of of Colombian articles, much cheaper.
Por ejemplo, hace más de una década, según nos contaron, cuando la moneda de Venezuela, el bolívar, era mucho más fuerte que el peso colombiano, la economía de Casuarito se sustentaba más que todo en sus vecinos, quienes cruzaban para comprar todo tipo de artículos colombianos, mucho más baratos.
Then, with the crisis that Venezuela has gone through the last 8 years marked by hyperinflation and constant devaluation of its currency, the outlook changed, and trade didn't continue to move the same. However, people continue to cross in both directions, Colombians go to Puerto Ayacucho for medical attention since they don't have specialists where they live and Venezuelans go to Casuarito to buy merchandise or medicines that are not available in their country.
Luego, con la crisis que Venezuela ha atravesado los últimos 8 años marcada por la hiperinflación y devaluación constante de su moneda, el panorama cambió, ya el comercio no siguió moviéndose igual. Sin embargo, la gente sigue cruzando en ambas direcciones, los colombianos van a Puerto Ayacucho para atención médica ya que no cuentan con especialistas en donde viven y los venezolanos van a Casuarito para comprar mercancía o medicinas que no se consiguen en su país.
While we were walking through the streets of this place, sometimes it seemed like a ghost town, I don't know if it was because of the hour (noon) or because the people who live here are attending to their businesses and not walking around.
Mientras íbamos paseando por las calles de este lugar, a veces parecía como un pueblo fantasma, no sé si era por la hora (mediodía) o porque las personas que viven aquí están atendiendo sus negocios y no caminando por ahí.
Near Casuarito I read that there are places of interest such as archaeological remains of indigenous peoples, petroglyphs, hills for hiking, among others, however we didn't see any tourist agency there or any place where they offered these walks ... it would have been interesting to have gone to one of them.
Cerca de Casuarito leí que hay lugares de interés como restos arqueológicos de los pueblos indígenas, petroglifos, cerros para hacer senderismo, entre otros, sin embargo no vimos ninguna agencia turística allí o algún sitio donde ofrecieran estos paseos… hubiese sido interesante haber ido a alguno de ellos.
In total we spent about two hours in Casuarito, before we left, JM, the son of my friend Zoraibeth, took the opportunity to play for a while in a park that was near the pier.
En total estuvimos unas dos horas en Casuarito, antes de irnos, JM, el hijo de mi amiga Zoraibeth, aprovechó para jugar un rato en un parque que estaba cerca del embarcadero.
We waited a while for the boat to arrive to return to Puerto Ayacucho and contemplated the Orinoco River from the Colombian side before sailing through its waters again.
Esperamos un rato a que llegara la lancha para volver a Puerto Ayacucho y contemplamos el río Orinoco desde el lado colombiano antes de navegar nuevamente por sus aguas.
