Hey guys! Those who know me, also know that I love to report about fascinating places that that you can hardly find in any travel guide. Last weekend, I visited exactly such a place in Mexico City. Normally I'm not a big fan of museums, but the Mueseo Anahuacalli impressed me in a surprising way. Why it is one of the best unknown sights of the city for me, you can read in the following paragraphs.
Hallo Leute! Wer mich kennt, der weiß, dass ich es liebe, über faszinierende Orte zu berichten, die man in kaum einem Reiseführer findet. Genau so einen Ort besuchte ich vergangenes Wochenende in Mexiko City. Normalerweise bin ich kein großer Fan von Museen, doch das Mueseo Anahuacalli beeindruckte mich auf überraschende Art und Weise. Warum es für mich eine der besten unbekannten Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt ist, lest ihr in den kommenden Absätzen.
The district of San Pablo de Tepetlapa in the south of Mexico City is actually not particularly attractive. When driving through the streets of this neighbourhood, you would never expect to find an impressive sight nearby. But once you have entered the square in front of the museum, surrounded by high walls, and seen the building made of black volcanic stone with its unique shape, you immediately become curious and can hardly wait to learn more about it.
Der Stadtteil San Pablo de Tepetlapa im Süden von Mexiko City ist eigentlich nicht besonders ansehnlich. Bei einer Fahrt durch die Straßen dieses Bezirks würde man niemals eine beeindruckende Sehenswürdigkeit ganz in der Nähe vermuten. Doch hat man den von hohen Mauern umgebenen Mueseumsvorplatz erst einmal betreten und das aus schwarzem Vulkanstein erbaute Gebäude mit seiner einzigartigen Form erblickt, wird man sofort neugierig und kann es kaum erwarten, mehr darüber zu erfahren.
The construction of the museum was initiated in 1942 by the famous Mexican painter Diego Rivera and was intended to house his collection of pre-Columbian art objects. Unfortunately, the building was only completed after Rivera's death in 1963, but his vision became reality. Today, about 50,000 objects from the pre-Columbian era can be found in this museum. By the way, Diego Rivera was the husband of the even more famous painter Frida Kahlo, to whom there is also a museum dedicated just a few minutes' drive away, in the touristy part of Coyoacan.
Der Bau des Museums wurde im Jahr 1942 vom berühmten mexikanischen Maler Diego Rivera initiiert und sollte dessen Sammlung präkolumbianischer Kunstobjekte beherbergen. Leider wurde das Gebäude erst nach Riveras Tod, im Jahre 1963 fertiggestellt, doch seine Vision wurde Wirklichkeit. Heute findet man ungefähr 50.000 Objekte aus der präkolumbianischen Ära in diesem Muesum. Diego Rivera war übrigens der Ehemann der noch bekannteren Malerin Frida Kahlo, der auch ein Museum nur wenige Fahrminuten entfernt, im touristischen Teil von Coyoacan, gewidmet ist.
In addition to the objects on display, the architecture of the three-storey building itself is particularly impressive. You feel as if you are in an ancient Mayan site. All the walls are made of black volcanic stone, there are detailed mosaics on the ceilings and even the windows are made of thin stone slabs that let in only a little light. All this in combination creates a truly mystical atmosphere.
Neben den ausgestellten Objekten, beeindruckt aber vor allem die Architektur des dreistöckigen Gebäudes selbst. Man fühlt sich hier wie in einer antiken Maya-Stätte. Alle Mauern bestehen aus schwarzem Vulkanstein, an den Decken findet man detailreiche Mosaike und selbst die Fenster sind aus dünnen Steinplatten gefertigt, die nur wenig Licht durchlassen. All dies in Kombination sorgt für eine wirklich mystische Atmosphäre.
But as if all that wasn't enough, the museum has an observation deck with a dreamlike view of the surrounding neighbourhoods. I was lucky enough to be there at sunset time. So the scenery was even more fascinating. By the way, here you are so far away from the city centre that you can only make out the skyscrapers of Reforma as tiny silhouettes on the horizon. The dimensions of Mexico City are hard to put into words.
Doch als wäre das alles noch nicht genug, verfügt das Museum über eine Aussichtsplattform mit einem traumhaften Blick auf die umgebenden Stadtteile. Ich hatte das Glück, zur Zeit des Sonnenuntergangs vor Ort zu sein. Somit war der Ausblick noch faszinierender. Hier ist man übrigens so weit vom Stadtzentrum entfernt, dass man die Wolkenkratzer von Reforma nur noch als winzige Silhouetten am Horizont erkennen kann. Die Ausmaße von Mexiko City sind kaum in Worte zu fassen.
If you're wondering about the arranged tables and decorations on the museum forecourt, there was a wedding there on the evening of my visit. Yes, you can actually rent this unique place for events. By the way, the entrance fee to the museum is only 100 pesos (5$/€). So if you ever visit the largest city in North America, don't miss this wonderful sight!
Falls ihr euch über die gedeckten Tische und die Dekoration auf dem Museumsvorplatz wundert, es fand am Abend meines Besuchs eine Hochzeit dort statt. Ja, man kann diesen einzigartigen Ort tatsächlich für Events mieten. Der Eintritt in das Museum kostet übrigens nur 100 pesos (5$/€). Falls ihr also mal in die größte Stadt Nordamerikas kommt, lasst euch diese wundervolle Sehenswürdigkeit auf keinen Fall entgehen!

It's a very nice place to visit and get to know. I did not know this museum. Mexico is amazing, I have several friends there and they tell me how nice it is and the wonderful places to admire. Thank you for sharing it with us.
