Votes Now Over Dust

Hi fellow Lions,

Today I wanted to explore the way things have changed up a bit with the increased token price!

Votes Now Over Dust

One of the things that I think has been really good to see over time here is that some accounts votes are now over the dust threshold that would, at a lower token price, be relatively unnoticed!

I have been fortunate and lucky enough to receive votes from many groups along the way and some follow my fanbase of some kind or another. What I have seen lately is a pretty steady increase in the accounts that are voting on my posts that are now over the dust threshold that have been voting on my posts for a while! I think that's a pretty good and significant improvement for many.

I know that we have a lot of new people or people who aren't too familiar with some of the nuances of the blockchain many of us call home but the dust threshold is the point that needs to be crossed for a vote to count and be paid out. On someone's post like mine it's not something many have to worry about since mine have been over the threshold for a while but that hasn't always been the case and with many people around here, that's not the case!

The dust threshold is anything that is less than .025$ in vote value. The most common way to see this is when you see people voting on comments. Many comments will never cross the .025$ threshold and thus will not reach payout. This is to prevent reward abuse from thousands of accounts and keep the token more scarce. If you, as a new person, vote on my post and your vote is only worth .01$ you may still earn a little bit of what we call Curation rewards, or a bit of Hive given back to you for voting on my post but if you vote on someone's comment and it doesn't go above .025$ it will be unfortunately wasted.

This is why I recommend to everyone new that I interact with, don't vote comments! Save your voting power for posts so that you can earn a little bit instead of using it all on comments. I know many are in the Fakebook mindset where you just like everything but in the world we live in where things are curated and incentivized, votes are precious!

With the increase in the Hive token price over the past few months, I've seen a remarkable increase in the amount of people whose votes are now over that .025$ threshold! Front ends like PeakD and others do the filtering work for you. Instead of showing you every single vote you got, which is fine on some front ends, it filters them out so only the ones that count towards rewards will be shown. I rather like that concept so it instills some underlying knowledge to someone even if they aren't aware of it just yet.

I see that some of the accounts are at dust are around 200 Hive Power and that's a good thing to see, the threshold that people are at to count towards the payout of a post that's visible. I've been a bit more attuned to this lately since I've helped out a friend @rayius progress himself on here and grow his account. He really put the Resource Credits to the test! I'll be writing about that in a future post but I find that really interesting as well. What are the new floors for minimal Hive Power that one needs to be able to interact and flourish on here?

Also, for any newbies that are not familiar, @dustsweeper is a service where you send them a small amount of Hive or HBD, and they hold it as a balance for you and upvote any below-dust-threshold posts/comments in order to get them over the top; you can choose only to upvote your incoming (so, when others upvote your posts/comments but it's not above the threshold), or your outgoing (if your votes are below the threshold), or both, and which to prioritize. Check them out, I've been using their service for years. :) They'll also alert you when your balance is low so you're sure to continue the vote-saving.

Just going to add that. Don't upvote your own comments, its a bad behavior and may result in downvotes :)

Also, take a look at @dustbunny, they do something similar but you have to be whitelisted and don't have to send hive or hbd

I didn't realize there were two dust services lol nice. I like the one you don't have to pay for personally lol

Thanks, yeah that's one of the ways! I don't know how much it's worth it, from an incoming rewards to outgoing payment perspective. Any idea? I appreciate the info for new folks though! I've gotten some sponsors in the dust thing once or twice so I remember it, I've never sent them funds to help me out though.

I don't know how to figure that kind of thing, but if you go into the Discord server and type $stats username, it'll tell you what your balance is, how much dust you have saved incoming vs outgoing, things like that.

Cool thanks! I’ll check it out, I see one of the dust things here and there so it would be good to figure out if I’ve got a balance lol

This is why I recommend to everyone new that I interact with, don't vote comments!

Great advice there for any newbies reading. Also, be sure to leave loads of meaningful comments on people's posts that clearly demonstrate that you took the time to read them. Many of us upvote these comments, so you'll be rewarded and the engagement may lead to people checking out your page.

Yeah for sure man! Comments are awesome and that’s how I got my first bunch of Steem power back in the day before hive. I actually didn’t post for a month or so, only commented lol. Now I’m nearing 365 days of posting once a day, wild stuff!

Closing in on one year of consecutive daily posts! Fantastic 👏👏

I've gone over 2 months of consecutive daily posts myself and the habit is now firmly engrained which is great. I'm not sure if I'll manage a full year, but who knows.

Hey thanks for the feature! I am gonna try using the Presearch thing! Haha. I guess since there are no additional cons, why not right? haha.

Anyway, totally agreed! Thank you so much for constantly keeping me under your wings. I learnt so much from you, and you are the reason why I was able to learn and grow so quickly! Really appreciate it!

You're welcome dude! It's a bit of learning to do but if we can get people to stick around, answer their questions and help them out then that turns into great users and more positive vibes for us on here!

Presearch is great, one thing I do is just modify my habits to incorporate the searches into my daily stuff. I use it to look up the weather, local restaurants and all that. Don't search 10 times in 2 minutes or they will put you in search reward jail but use it over the day and you'll do well! One thing to do is just keep at it, earning rewards for it slowly is better than using Google where you don't earn a damn thing!

Wait, there is a jail for this? Hahaha. It is quite amusing cause whenever I see that word, I get reminded of asking my pet dog to go jail whenever he gets naughty! hahaa.

yes, totally agreed. Since both will yield the same results, it is just way more wonderful to get rewarded while not changing our way of life! thank you so much for this awesome recommendation!

I was just talking to a new user about this the other day. I had forgotten the exact number.

The dust threshold is anything that is less than .025$ in vote value.

Thanks for the reminder!

You're welcome dude! My vote wasn't good enough for that for so long that I have it engrained in my head now hahaha

I thought they removed the dust thing at the previous hard fork so it doesn't matter how big or small your vote is now?

I don't think they removed it, it prevents a lot of people from spamming and getting paid for it. If every comment that got voted worth .01 got paid out that wouldn't be good! Respond to this message and I'll see if I can vote it at .01 and let's wait a week lol

Lol, let me try too and we can test this theory out 😂

Alright my 1% is worth .013 according to PeakD. Let’s see how it goes! Lol

Hey @cmplxty,
Your support for the HiveBuzz proposal this year has been much appreciated but it will end in a few days!
Do you mind renewing your vote for 2022 so the team can keep up with its work? Thank you!
https://peakd.com/me/proposals/199

Done, hopefully we can get you back up there with the new one!

Thank you for your unfailing support @cmplxty, much appreciated! 👍

I'll get to it! Keep it up!

don't vote comments

But voting on comments (not your own!) is good to incentivize interactions! So one actually should vote on comments!
A better advice is to power up adequately e.g. by buying Hive, so that your vote is above that treshold. It is an investment for people who want to stay longer on this chain, which definitely will bring returns!

Well of course that’s a good thing long term and for us as a platform overall to do however it’s not in the bags for some so I don’t think I would recommend that. I do see the value in it and it’s not too often I tell people about voting comments but I guess I could change my messaging.
