One Week of Playing Axie Infinity: Earnings Review

in LeoFinance2 months ago (edited)

While traditional centralized platforms continue to promote spend for nothing games, in the decentralized world we have seen the emergence of a new category of games: Play2Earn.

On the Hive blockchain we are rather familiar with that type of games thanks to Splinterlands and CryptoBrewMasters amongst others. There’s also quite some Gods Unchained players among Hivers.

Some months ago I highlighted the upcoming NBATopShots collectibles game by Dapper Labs, the makers of CryptoKitties.

In recent months a new game has quietly emerged and gained popularity, Axie Infinity.

As the game’s two tokens were recently listed on Binance, it was long overdue I kicked myself in the butt and tested out out Axie Infinity.

I have played Axie Infinity for almost 7 complete days now and am reporting about the earnings potential.

There’s more to Axie Infinity than mining SLP tokens (Small Love Potion) via playing, but for this initial review I am limiting myself to the gameplay.

One Week of Axie Infinity Playing: Earnings Review

Axie Infinity is a traditional (PvP) turn-based cards tame, where cards are. axies and you’re their trainer. There are two different game modes:

  1. Adventures
  2. The Arena (PvP)

In Adventures mode, your team of axies travels the land fighting opposition computer teams. For each win you gain experience points which can make your team level up. Each round also offers the opportunity to mine a certain number of SLP, depending on its difficulty. Daily SLP earnings in adventures are capped at 100.

Axie Infinity Adventure Mode

In the Arena, you play real-time opponents. Your axies do not level up. SLP are earned based on your Season rating and also on consecutive wins. The lower your season, the less you earn for a (first) win. There is no cap on how many SLP you can earn every day.

Players start with 50 energy and every two hours you receive additional 5 energy (max. 50).

I have been playing as a n00b, without truly studying the cards axies can play or different types of axies. I wanted to report about a sort of “virgin”, impulsive start. I was given a set of 3 axies, which I think qualify as B team in quality.

My initial aim was to play around two hours daily, as that is a minimum amount I tend to waste at my idle clickers and FIFA Mobile addiction. Time spent for nothing, in fact, occasionally I even tend to purchase a pack to progress faster in those games. Earnings? Zero, nada, naught, noppes, zilch.

And so I started, with my base team.

The n00b team setup

After I played almost two days with my plant (tank) in the wrong position — a n00b error I was sure I hadn’t made — I completed almost a whole week of playing Axie Infinity and can report my game earnings here.

I played a little longer than targeted. All game sessions were tracked with Toggl track. Generally I played in sessions of around 20 minutes, a quick break, several times a day.

Day

Time Played
Day 1

Day 2

Day 6
143SPL
742SPL
02:24:42
Day 7
139SPL
881SPL
01:57:28

I will undoubtedly play some more rounds of adventure today and score another 15SPL at least.

In total I made 881SPL in seven days. It is important to know that my team is so far only level 16 in adventure and I can thus not yet max out on the daily 100SLP you can earn in Adventure mode. But I should be able to do so in some days.

Small Love Potion has in recent days been trading at around $0.04 or higher.

At the rate of $0.04506415 at the time of writing, in one week I earned $39.70.

In many third world and development nations this is above minimum wage earnings. In 2 hours daily only.

Is Axie Infinity a Solid Investment?

To get started with Axie Infinity you need 3 axies. Currently, axies can only be obtained via the Axie Marketplace. Axies tend to trade starting at 0.05ETH each, or around $25/axie.

While people may be deterred by the initial investment cost, especially compared to other collectibles games with cheaper decks, as proven in last seven days, Axie Infinity is a sound investment. But Axie Infinity is time intensive, at least for those who wish to make a relative solid daily return.

And Axie Trainers can also breed new axies.

What Utility Does SLP Have?

Small Love Potion is Axie Infinity’s utility token which can be earned by players. Breeders do need an always increasing amount of SLP for each new breed with the same Axie. After few breeding rounds the amount of needed SLP quickly becomes too much to mine from playing.

With an ever growing community of players and breeders, the utility of the SLP token has been confirmed.

Recently, several axies also sold for respectable amounts. More than respectable amounts even. The most expensive one so far being sold for 300ETH.

Stay tuned for more upcoming Axie Infinity updates.

Note: Axie Infinity is based on the Ethereum blockchain, which means that at times GAS fees need be paid. But not to play with your Axies.

Good review!
All the time I wasted playing useless, time consuming games...
It's still quite a lot of time.
I was thinking maybe I can I enthuse my children to play this game. They play a lot of games and this way they can earn their weekly allowance (¬‿¬)

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Considering it’s their allowance, wouldn’t that be child labor then?

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I'm not forcing them to do so. And allowance is not obligatory ;)
But maybe it could be an addon to their allowance. Like a passive income for kids.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Don't let me hold you back, btw. I live in the Philippines, I know families where kids do work. Not knowing your economic situation, I'm not one to judge.

!ENGAGE 30

Thanks!
I'm living in the Netherlands.
We do try to learn our kids that having money is not always self-evident, that they are lucky they are born here and we should look after people who are less fortunate.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

That's a sound approach.

Btw my parents made me work to earn each time I wanted something more expensive. I'm Gen X, there was no cancel culture yet back then. Good thing that was.
What they did was to double what I earned but without telling me. When I was halfway it would then be a "family gift". Stacking sats old school, I guess.

I asked not because I wanted to put you on the spot but because of the thinking behind. This is after all a finance community and one with a high degree of transparency. If we can talk openly about how much we ourselves "have", that's one more stigma we remove.

I like the open culture and transparency here. Unfortunately I have not enough engagement coins yet, therefor an upvote.
Have a good day!

Here, have some more. :)

This made me laugh :<)

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

It was meant to be funny, but the idea isn't that crazy. They do get their allowance even when they won't play the game though.
But I've been playing a lot of games and didn't earn anything with it.
How many people play(ed) candy crush (is it still popular)? Imagine if all these people were payed for that...

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I agree. Not a crazy idea at all.

If everybody would be paid for candy crush, the world wouldn't become much smarter hahaha!

Have a nice day!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Sure is. But for me it’s an average amount of mobile gaming time every day. Mostly spent in small breaks.

Playing to mine SLP isn’t the end goal tho, but more about that in a not too distant future.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

You are not interested in breeding, as this is quite expensive and hard to get a profit out of it? Just daily quests and SLP to sell?

I will try it too for a week.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

I am interested in breeding but the set of axies I was given (for this review) all have breedcount 6.

Eventually I will get a slightly better set and then also find them quality partners. :3

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

This is a terrific review, thanks. I'll have to look in to it and maybe give it a try.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thanks. It’s time intensive when playing to mine, but there’s other viable earning options like breeding.

The team are also working at a solution to reduce ETH fees.

Definitely one to keep an eye on, at least.

In my non-technical head, I would think a roll-up of some kind would be where games on ETH are heading. It's going to be fascinating to see how Eth scales over the next 6 months.

Thank you for your engagement on this post, you have recieved ENGAGE tokens.

I'll chek it out. It's a shame that a game is on ETH, GAS fees are expensive as hell (

Do you get any other reward on the Arena? I heard you get $DAI after winning a match, maybe they removed that...

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Not sure they're active currently. Haven't seen any, otherwise would have reported them.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thank you for this I keep trying to find fun crypto games to play, most unfortunately don't seem to work on my devise. Definitely checking this one out! Thank you!

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Thanks for sharing, you seem like a blockchain gaming expert. I start to follow

!BEER

At least you tried it.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Not too bad. I've been making about $50/Season in @splinterlands by only playing 30 mins a day. I find the game more fun personally. So I won't be getting into Axie Infinity anytime soon. But I'm sure there will be some real interest from developing countries. Thanks a ton for the breakdown of earning :)

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

What’s the duration of a season and how much did you invest in Splinterlands?

I find the game more fun personally.

So... you’ve played Axie Infinity because how can you otherwise know which one is more fun if you didn’t personally compare them?

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

What’s the duration of a season

~15 Days

how much did you invest in Splinterlands?

$500+ I haven't kept count. I'm mostly betting on long term value for the NFTs

So... you’ve played Axie Infinity because how can you otherwise know which one is more fun if you didn’t personally compare them?

I watched some gameplay videos and tutorials like this one. I hope they are an accurate representation of what they game is like

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Graphics are outdated.

Is it representative? Yes and no.
Yes, because that’s how the game goes.
No, because there’s many team different team setups and many different cards, even within the same type of Axie. It does lead to interesting strategies in PvP

I’m a week in and I’m not sure I’ve seen all cards yet. I’ve seen a lot of players who don’t know how to use their awesome cards tho, and some who just were awesomely good and totally outplayed me too.

Btw no bots in Axie. :D

I did some digging into the game. I like where they ae going with the land sales. It's the market and in game economy that interest me the most. Art style is not my thing. But I like the icon designs. They are some of the best in crypto I've seen.

I also like that they have a real app. Web app experience isn't always fast and smooth as I would like it to be. (I do use an old laptop and a budget phone to be fair)

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Let's be fair here: playing for SLP is mining. Mining should have a degree of complexity. I don't really mind it's time intensive, the return is solid for investment. Super solid.

What I like most is that they seem sound in tokenomics. You don't often find teams who have a vision which actually balances both demand and offer.

That is totally true!

Thanks for the review, It's very exciting to see all the games that are blockchain-based. I have spent a lot of time on Splinterlands but I'm wondering why there hasn't been a more sophisticated action type game yet, or something fun like Mario brothers. Is this to intence for a blockchain, or has no super-skilled game developer tried yet? I just think these games are kind of lame.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Recently, several axies also sold for respectable amounts. More than respectable amounts even. The most expensive one so far being sold for 300ETH.

That is impressive, these collectibles are getting some love!

I like to think that being paid for our time ( in crypto ) is gonna be the future but two hours per day - especially spent on gaming - is a lot for me.

I hardly play games at all, even though my younger brother is a game maker.

I will keep an eye on these kind of developments though and can already see the potential for people living in countries were salaries are a joke. Although Portugal, where I live, has low salaries too, prices for daily expenses are still relatively high and a couple of dollars an hour isn't really worth it yet.

Thanks for sharing this though :<)

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

Yes, it is time intensive. For me that wasn't an issue since I have many breaks I spend gaming on mobile. But definitely not everyone's things.

There's more aspects to Axie Infinity though for those who want to earn. Breeding is definitely both cheaper than it was in CryptoKitties and more functional as well with an active market with purpose.

!ENGAGE 20

Thanks for explaining this. It's posts like yours and games like this that get me closer and closer to actually giving crypto gaming a try.

Posted Using LeoFinance Beta

You could always try Gods Unchained. I don’t play it since they don’t have mobile apps yet and I’m in a mobile only setup, but I’m told their free decks are of decent enough quality to get started.

Those are really impressive earnings. Regretting I didn't buy Axies when they were about 16$ a piece.
