In rigorous testing, lithium-ion batteries utilizing this new anode demonstrated exceptional performance and maintained stable operation for over 1,500 rapid charge cycles.

Besides, these batteries also showed a 1.5 times higher energy density compared to those using conventional graphite anodes. This means they could potentially offer longer driving ranges in EVs without increasing battery size.

The breakthrough also holds promise for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), which are a potentially cheaper and more sustainable alternative.

“Sodium ions generally exhibit poor reactivity with conventional anode materials like graphite or silicon. However, the hard carbon–tin nano-composite structure maintains excellent stability and fast kinetics in sodium environments, underscoring its versatility across multiple battery platforms,” highlighted the press release.

While the digital euro, the project that seeks to implement a European central bank digital currency (CBDC), has yet to be approved, the European Central Bank (ECB) is already studying its effects on the current composition of assets, including banknotes and bank deposits, in the Eurozone.

The latest report from the bank indicates that the upcoming issuance of the digital euro can reshape how Europeans use money, substituting for currently used forms of money.

The bank estimates that the digital euro has the potential to substitute 5 of every 10 euros issued in physical banknotes from circulation. In the same way, the same study predicts that for each 10 digital euros issued, 3 will be removed from bank deposits.

The total impact of the digital euro was studied in three different cases, depending on the adoption and reception of the citizens. If the adoption remains low, 15 billion euros in banknotes would be substituted. If the reception gets to its highest level, 125.000 billion euros in banknotes would be taken out of the market.

Finally, if the adoption reaches its highest level, the bank predicts that the digital euro would substitute 256 billion euros in banknotes.

Researchers in South Korea have made a significant breakthrough in battery technology by unveiling a new anode material that tackles two of the biggest hurdles for EVs: slow charging times and battery lifespan.

This innovative design promises batteries that can be charged in just 20 minutes and can endure over 1,500 charge cycles, which can eliminate range anxiety and long waits at charging stations.

“This research represents a new milestone in the development of next-generation high-performance batteries and holds promise for applications in electric vehicles, hybrid systems, and grid-scale ESS,” said Professor Soojin Park of POSTECH.

This breakthrough comes as the demand for better, faster-charging batteries surges, not just for electric vehicles but also for large-scale energy storage needed to support renewable power grids.

Today’s lithium-ion batteries primarily use graphite anodes. However, graphite’s slow charging speeds and limited energy storage capacity have been a persistent hurdle in the quest for widespread EV adoption and efficient grid-scale energy storage.

The joint research team from POSTECH and the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) developed a solution by combining hard carbon with minuscule tin nanoparticles.

Hard carbon, known for its porous structure, allows lithium ions (the energy carriers) to move much faster than in graphite, which enables rapid charging.
