―¿Qué sucederá entonces? ―preguntó Robert, sentado en la yerba con vista a la planicie que alojaba los cuerpos de los más de cien mil habitantes y tripulantes de la Elpis.

―Explique su pregunta por favor ―dijo OLIMPIA.

―¿Qué sucederá ahora?, la Elpis va en rumbo a impactar con Próxima Centauri y nosotros estamos aquí, ¿qué haremos? ―preguntó.

―Usted tiene la decisión, después de que los pobladores y tripulantes murieron, no había ningún sentido para la existencia de la Elpis, pero como usted está ahora con nosotros y como único humano en la nave, es técnicamente el capitán ―dijo OLIMPIA.

―Pero yo no se que se debe hacer, estamos solos, soy el único humano que queda vivo a bordo de esta nave y con seguridad también el último que existe ―dijo con voz entre cortada ―. ¿Qué puedo hacer?

―SOCRATES y yo tenemos como principal responsabilidad resguardar la vida de quienes habitan esta nave, en consecuencia, no podemos realizar ninguna acción que pueda ponerlo en riesgo ―dijo OLIMPIA ―. Hace quince horas, cuando confirmamos su existencia, SOCRATES, modificó el rumbo de la nave, nuestra nueva ruta nos llevará a un orbita alta en Próxima b.

―Y después de que estemos en órbita ¿qué podemos hacer? ―preguntó Robert.

―Sólo eso, no podemos hacer nada más, esperar, puede usted vivir su vida en la Elpis, tal vez ponerse nuevamente en estasis y aguardar a que las naves colonizadoras de avanzada logren tener éxito ―dijo OLIMPIA.

―Es decir que puedo envejecer y morir sólo en esta nave o irme a dormir, sin esperanza de volver a despertar ―comentó Robert.

―Es su decisión.

―No es posible tomar rumbo al destino de una de las naves colonizadoras ―preguntó.

―No, el combustible de la Elpis era suficiente sólo para completar este viaje y hacer las maniobras de descenso, no podemos ir más allá de donde estamos, además un viaje así nos tomaría varios miles de años.

Robert se mantuvo en silencio observando la planicie, se puso de pie y caminó sobre la gigantesca loza de concreto donde yacía la humanidad, miró en la dirección donde OLIMPIA permanecía, el sistema de simulación ambiental de la nave ya había iniciado el ciclo de noche y el cuerpo blanco y satinado de la androide, reflejaba las luces de las farolas del parque, dándole un aspecto fantasmal.

Miró a su alrededor el bello parque que rodeaba la loza, luego vio hacia arriba, las delgadas nubes dejaban entrever las luces de las calles de la parte de la ciudad que pendía boca abajo sobre su cabeza, asemejando extrañas estrellas, iluminando una falsa bóveda celeste.

El recuerdo de su hermano, su despreocupada vida en Titán y como todo había acabado repentinamente, dando este imprevisto y desconcertante cambio, vino a su mente; acompañado del conocimiento del testarudo deseo de Matías de mantenerlo con vida, lo que trascendió incluso la suya propia. En vista de esto sólo había una cosa que podía hacer.

―Esperaremos ―dijo, sin ver a OLIMPIA ―. Esperaremos todo el tiempo que sea posible.

-What will happen now? -Robert asked, sitting on the grass overlooking the plain that housed the bodies of the more than a hundred thousand inhabitants and crew of the Elpis.

-Explain your question please, -said OLYMPIA.

-What will happen now, the Elpis is on a course to hit Proxima Centauri and we are here, what will we do?

-You have the decision, after the people and crew died there was no point in the existence of the Elpis, but as you are now with us and as the only human on the ship you are technically the captain, -said OLYMPIA.

-But I don't know what to do, we are alone, I am the only human left alive aboard this ship and certainly the last one in existence, -he said in a muffled voice -. What can I do?
-SOCRATES and I have as our main responsibility to protect the lives of those who live on this ship, therefore we cannot do anything that could put you at risk, -said OLYMPIA-. Fifteen hours ago, when we confirmed your existence, SOCRATES changed the course of the ship, our new route will take us into a high orbit in Proxima b.

-And after we are in orbit what can we do? -asked Robert.

-Robert asked, 'Just that, we can't do anything else, wait, you can live your life on the Elpis, maybe go back into stasis and wait for the advance ships to succeed, - said OLYMPIA.

-I can grow old and die alone on this ship, or I can go to sleep, with no hope of waking up again, - said Robert.

-It's your choice.

-It is not possible to set a course for one of the colonizer ships, -he asked.

-No, the fuel on the Elpis was sufficient just to complete this journey and make the descent manoeuvres, we cannot go beyond where we are, and such a journey would take several thousand years.

Robert stood silently watching the plain, stood up and walked over the giant concrete slab where humanity lay, looked in the direction where OLYMPIA was standing, the ship's environmental simulation system had already started the cycle of night and the white, satin body of the android reflected the lights of the park's lampposts, giving it a ghostly appearance.

He looked around at the beautiful park surrounding the earthenware, then he saw upwards, the thin clouds hinting at the street lights in the part of the city which hung upside down over his head, resembling strange stars, illuminating a false vault of heaven.

The memory of his brother, his carefree life on Titan and how everything had suddenly ended, giving this unexpected and disconcerting change, came to his mind; accompanied by the knowledge of Matthias' stubborn desire to keep him alive, which transcended even his own. In view of this there was only one thing he could do.

-We will wait, -he said, without seeing OLYMPIA-. We will wait as long as possible.
