Ducks don't give a damn about what's going on. Maybe we thought they did, but we were wrong. Oh, you'll see them by the bay, waddling into the water, looking mighty pretty. They'll synchronize their movements as they float and preen themselves against an urban backdrop that nicely frames the shot. Well, ain't that a hoot?

But do you think these ducks know anything about the coronavirus? Anything about the epidemiology and genetics of these viral entities? Just try explaining it to them. Lord knows, I've tried. Will they recommend any medicines? Are they aware of the implications for human life on this planet? The answer is no. It's our problem, not theirs.

At some level, I imagine, the ducks know that something is going on? Every spring, they see hordes of semi-naked hairless monkeys invade the shores, frolicking and eating all sorts of delightful food. But this year has been different. Only a few of them have shown up and they're all bundled up in small groups. Keeping their distance from each other. I'm sure the ducks have noticed and quacked about it. So maybe they do know what's going on; maybe they do care. Yea, at least that's what I tell myself in moments of doubt and weakness, but I know better. These ducks just don't give a damn.
