Interiors of Havana's Capitol: A work of Art [en-es]

Here are some places in Cuba that are truly emblematic, such as the Morro de La Habana, but there is another one that is probably among the top 5 and that is: The Capitol of Havana, located in the heart of downtown Havana on Prado, Dragones, Industria and San José streets, and its interior marks the kilometer zero of Cuban roads.

This construction began in 1929 and was in charge of the architect Eugenio Rayneri Piedra as technical director and the design itself was by the renowned architects Evelio Govantes Fuerte and Félix Cabarrocas Ayala. The outdoor areas were designed by the famous landscape architect Jean Claude Forestier.
The construction was carried out by a North American company with extensive experience in large-scale projects: "Purdy & Henderson.
The Capitol, as all Cubans know it, was repaired in a capital way very recently and is a true architectural jewel. I had the pleasure of visiting it recently, as it is not yet fully open to the public. Many people say that it is a copy of the Capitol in Washington, but although it looks similar, the reality is that they have many differences. One of the most marked is the dome. While the dome of the Whashington Capitol is made of iron, this one is completely made of reinforced concrete, copper sheets and 22 carat gold.
When you enter this place, it gives you the feeling of a change of era.
The place is built and also recovered, with an impeccable exquisiteness. Sober and at the same time full of details.
In this post I want to refer explicitly to the ceilings of the place. I must tell you that I left with dizziness, because of the time I spent looking up and it was impossible not to.
From the very entrance you start to see ornate ceilings with beautiful Italian Renaissance style chandeliers, hanging from almost 20 meters high.
Those intricate ceilings full of details made with paint and bronze, are absolutely mind-blowing. I was terribly sorry for not having a professional camera at that moment, because my friends, how difficult it is to do justice to what I saw, to how it felt. All that with my cell phone.
There are halls that have the ornaments of ceilings and walls covered with gold leaf.
I want to tell you that I am a big fan of history, and obviously moving back in time through museums is something I have always been passionate about, and it overwhelms me in an impressive way. It may sound crazy, but it's like traveling back in time. I think about how many people walked those floors, touched that furniture... and so... yes I know, I'm crazy, it doesn't matter, surely someone somewhere in the world, will agree with me, and if not, I'm happy in my madness.
I thought for a moment that everything would be the same post, but it seemed unfair to me with such an architectural monument.
Italian Renaissance, Empire, Louis XIV and Spanish Renaissance styles predominate.
I have to tell you that it is true that the so-called hall of the lost steps looks amazing, but for me, the capitol library was what impressed me the most... I have no words to convey how I felt when I entered it.
The smell, the light, the intense colors...it was magical, and it made my heart squeeze a little bit, because I could have stayed and lived there.
According to the guide of the place, she told us that the ceiling was inspired by a room of the "Borghese" palace, belonging to a noble Italian family, which shows in the center an octagonal skylight of leaded glass.
Farewell, and until another encounter with architecture.

An extremely beautiful place! The roofs are a majestic thing, thank you for posting it.

A fraternal embrace

What a beauty my goodness, I haven't been in there since they restored the dome and the whole capitol, can you believe it?
It really is breathtaking and you took advantage of that tour as you should, doing honour to your art. I'm glad you showed it like that and shared on Hive one of our great architectural treasures.

📸💯

Thanks, nanixxx😍, discovering that my phone had the possibility of a wide lens was very timely to make these photos, because I have had it since recently, from a gift that I got, and the previous one did not have this possibility in addition to much less photo quality, so as a ring to the finger! 😁

Impressive, really impressive. These images leave me speechless, how beautiful. It looks like one of the majestic palaces of Europe.
We should coordinate a visit in the group to go, I would really like to visit it.
Let's go all the cuhivers!
Spectacular photos!

It reminds you of a castle or palace in Europe because that is precisely how it is decorated, based on styles that are references in the history of world art, such as the Italian Renaissance or Louis XIV. I could go again, and I am sure I will see everything with the same illusion, because it is breathtaking. 🤗

Hello @janetedita I share your madness. I am passionate about the architectural elements that exist in this monumental building, they are one of the things that makes me lose my breath, an incredible experience that I am crazy to have, I have not been able to go after its remodeling, it is impressive what you show I'm so glad I can see it through you, but I won't stop until I see it with my own eyes. Beautiful publication friend

Thanks friend🤗. You just have to see it!😍 You know I love photography, and no photo can do justice to the feeling of being there surrounded by so much beauty. So you can definitely add me to the group that is going to go there again.

Gracias amiga.

A real gem our capitol, beautifully photographed by your talented hands, congratulations @janetedita and thank you for sharing this wonderful edification for the delight of all friends of the community, greetings.

Thank you very much Raulito! Surely you would find a million details to photograph, because my friend, that's what is so impressive, that it is stunning as a huge building and at the same time with the smallest detail.

Muchas gracias Raulito!

We can tell them to lend it to us for a week so that we can take pictures of it everywhere!

🤭🤣🤣🤣 let's do that 😉 And maybe...just maybe I'll get lost in there and have to stay living 🤭🤣

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hermoso....
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Yes, the place is incredibly well restored. It keeps a lot of original pieces that in another post I will show later because there were too many things to show. What a beautiful place full of history.

I really like buildings that are classic in this modern era, very classy in my opinion, besides that we can also learn the history of these buildings

The truth is that it is a good way to learn history, because it is palpable, you can see it very close (although not always touch it due to conservation issues). This particular building has a very rich history and also a lot of mysticism in some aspects because many of what is inside is related to Freemasonry, a society that although not secret if it is very discreet.

What spectacular images of the capitol of Cuba, you were able to capture the harmony of its forms and structure. Greetings !

In terms of prestigious government institutions such as the Capitol Buildings, grandness of architecture is the key to its success! And to achieve this glorious effect, Architects and Designers have lots of metaphorical devices to implement these visual impressions such a gigantic columns, royal symbols, and ridiculously high ceilings. The Havana Capitol's ceilings are undeniably masterpieces of epic proportions, and I'm glad you were able to experience them in person. Congrats! 👍😎

Greetings @janetedita, a warm welcome to the Architecture+Design Community! 😊

Certainly a work of art. To be so close to such a work is a complete change of scenery, because normally one sees these places through photos, but to smell the scent of the wood in a room completely dressed in mahogany, is amazing. I'm glad I was invited too!
Not being an architect I might not notice certain things that a professional would see right away, and unfortunately my husband, who is an architect was not in the city to go with me, but, I showed him the bunch of photos I took and he was amazed.
Thanks for the warm welcome and I hope to be here with you more!🤗

Oh cool! I'm glad architecture runs in your family with your dear husband as your prime influencer, guide, and inspiration. Having said that, I can't wait to experience more of your architectural discoveries soon. All the best! 😊

Hello my dear friend, the information and photos you publish are really inspiring and informative. The architectural elements inside this artistic building are awe-inspiring. Most of the artistic carvings are very fond of looking at them for a long time. You are truly lucky to see those elements with live eyes. Thanks a lot to share different architectural designs with information.
