Hello community:
This is my first time in the architecture and design space. I hope to be able to share with you my experiences and to be nourished by your publications as well. Today I propose you a look at the architecture and a bit of history of the catholic church of Santiago de las Vegas, Havana, Cuba.

Es mi primera vez en el espacio de la arquitectura y el diseño. Espero poder compartir con ustedes mis experiencias y nutrirme de sus publicaciones también. Hoy les propongo una mirada a la arquitectura y un poco de historia de la iglesia católica de Santiago de las Vegas, La Habana, Cuba.

Calle 4 between 13 and 15. This is the address where this church is located in the town of Santiago de las Vegas, located to the south of the Havana capital of Cuba. In front of it: the Juan Delgado Park (another emblematic site of this town because of the history it holds).
Calle 4 entre 13 y 15. Esta es la dirección donde se ubica esta iglesia en el pueblo de Santiago de las Vegas, ubicado al sur de la capital habanera de Cuba. Frente a ella: el Parque Juan Delgado (otro sitio emblemático de esta localidad por tanta historia que guarda).

On a walk with my baby I came across this majestic construction site and it caught my attention to see the workers working on the scaffolding at such a height. I couldn't help myself and asked a man (who was on the ground floor helping to carry materials up) what work they were doing. He replied that they were doing general repairs to the church, including repairing the roof and sealing cracks, among other things. He also told me that they were workers from the archbishopric of Havana.
I thought it would be interesting to go inside and see what this monument held and so I did.
De paseo con mi bebé me encuentro con esta obra majestuosa y me llamó la atención ver a los obreros trabajando en estos andamios a tanta altura. No me pude contener y le pregunté a un señor (que estaba en los bajos ayudando a subir materiales) el trabajo que estaban realizando. Me respondió que estaban haciendo una reparación general en la iglesia que incluía la reparación de cubierta y sellado de grietas, entre otros. Además me comentó que eran trabajadores del arzobispado de La Habana.
Pensé que sería interesante entrar y ver por dentro qué guardaba este monumento y así lo hice.

Once inside, I took a tour of the entire church. I first toured the interior and then took a closer look at the façades, inside the perimeter wall that surrounds it.
Una vez que entré di un recorrido por toda la iglesia. Recorrí primero su interior y luego di una mirada más detallada a sus fachadas, dentro del muro perimetral que la rodea.
This is a shot taken from the entrance door, where this central mosaic aisle leads to the high altar at the end, accompanied by large lateral intercolumniation arches.
Esta es una toma realizada desde la puerta de entrada, donde este pasillo central de mosaicos nos lleva hacia el altar mayor al final acompañados de grandes arcos laterales intercolumnios.
The wooden roof has kept its beams in perfect condition and beautiful chandeliers with glass teardrops hang from them, giving an elegant view.
La cubierta de madera conserva sus vigas en perfecto estado y de ellas cuelgan preciosas lámparas con lágrimas de vidrio, dando así una vista elegante.

I took some photos, but I was not satisfied with what I could only see with my eyes. So I asked some church workers if they could give me some information about the construction dates of the place and if they had any old photos of the church.
Tomé algunas fotos, pero no estaba conforme con lo que solo veían mis ojos. Así que pregunté a unos trabajadores de la iglesia si podían ofrecerme algún dato sobre las fechas de construcción del lugar y si tenían algunas fotos antiguas de la iglesia.
She is Margarita Sales Quesada, the girl who works in the church archives and very kindly showed me the documents that are kept there. There is a very special book, which is called "el libro de barajas" (the book of cards) because it is the oldest document kept there and dates from 1691, when this church had not yet been built. This book had been inherited from La Cruz Verde (the old and first church that existed in this locality in 1680). It is 332 years old and you can still read what is written in it... it seems incredible.
Ella es Margarita Sales Quesada, la muchacha que trabaja en el archivo de la iglesia y muy amablemente me mostró los documentos que allí se archivan. Hay un libro muy especial, al cual se le llama "el libro de barajas" por ser el documento más antiguo que allí conservan y data del año 1691, cuando aún esta iglesia no había sido construida. >Este libro se había heredado de La Cruz Verde (antigua y primera iglesia que existió en esta localidad en 1680). Con 332 años y aún se puede leer en él lo que está escrito... parece increíble.
Inside the premises of the archive there is this metal staircase that leads to the bell tower to which I unfortunately had no access, but my curiosity had no limits and I continued investigating trying to find something more substantial than what my eyes could see.
Margarita told me that they didn't keep any photos of the place or other documents that could help me in my search, but she presented me with something much better than that: a living treasure?
Dentro del local del archivo de ubica esta escalera metálica que lleva hasta el campanario al cual to tuve acceso lastimosamente, pero mi curiosidad no tuvo límites y continué investigando tratando de buscar algo más sustancioso de lo que mis ojos alcanzaban a ver.
Margarita me dijo que no conservaban fotos del lugar ni otros documentos que me pudieran ayudar en mi búsqueda, pero me presentó algo mucho mejor que eso: un tesoro vivo...
Cuquito: my guide
Cuquito: mi guía
This valuable jewel, accompanied by the patron saint Santiago Apóstol, is a worker in this church. His name is Bernardo Tuero Rodríguez, but he is known here as Cuquito. This wise man offered to give me a personalised tour and told me the names of the objects, as I was unaware of how many of them were named, as well as specific places inside the church.
The year was 1694 and on the 18th of February the first stone was laid in the place where this masterpiece of construction stands today. Slaves did the work at that time and the priests of the catholic churches were Spaniards who resided here in that colonial period.
Esta joya valiosa, acompañado del Santo Patrón Santiago Apóstol, es trabajador de esta iglesia. Su nombre es Bernardo Tuero Rodríguez, pero es conocido aquí por Cuquito. Este sabio señor se ofreció a darme un recorrido personalizado y me fue contando al mismo tiempo que me iba diciendo los nombres de los objetos, pues yo desconocía de cómo se nombraba muchos de ellos, así como lugares específicos dentro de la iglesia.
Corría el año 1694 y justo el 18 de febrero se coloca la primera piedra en el lugar que hoy se encuentra esta obra maestra de construcción. Los esclavos eran quienes ejecutaban el trabajo en aquella época y los sacerdotes de las iglesias católicas eran españoles que residían aquí en aquella etapa colonial.
It was in 1944 when the construction of this place was finished and this tombstone was erected in gratitude to the priest who was in charge of the place at that time (1939-1952). This man asked the people to help him with a bucket of sand to finish building and repairing the church.
Fue en el año 1944 cuando se dieran por terminadas las obras de construcción de este lugar y se erigiese esta tarja en agradecimiento al cura que desde en aquel entonces (1939-1952) dirigía aquel lugar. Este hombre pidió al pueblo que aunque fuera se le ayudara con un cubito de arena para terminar de construir y reparar la iglesia.
Between 1940 and 1944 the church underwent major construction changes. The main altar, which was originally made of cedar and mahogany, was replaced by one made of marble. The floor was also changed and today it is all marble. Also the supporting columns of the whole church had a round cross-section and were changed to square sections, keeping the arches in the beams.
Entre los años 1940 y 1944 se dieron las mayores transformaciones de construcción en la iglesia, pues el altar mayor, que inicialmente era de madera cedro y caoba, fue cambiado por uno fabricado de mármol. El piso también fue cambiado y hoy es todo de mármol. También las columnas soportes de toda la iglesia tenían una sección redonda y se reformaron a secciones cuadradas, manteniéndose los arcos en las vigas.

Most of the wooden furniture dates back to 1944, some of it was added later, but it has been preserved in the same way.
La mayoría de los muebles de madera datan del año 1944, algunos fueron incorporados más adelante, pero se conservan de igual manera.
Beautiful stained glass windows let in light from outside the church. They are donations made from Madrid for this church.
Hermosos vitrales dejan entrar la luz desde el exterior del local. Son donaciones realizadas desde Madrid para esta iglesia.
Elegant capitals adorn the entrances between the rooms.
Elegantes capiteles adornan los vanos de los accesos entre locales.
Formerly, the pulpit (a small balcony from which the priest spoke at mass) was located on this column, but it was removed because it was in poor condition.
Antiguamente, en esta columna estaba ubicado el púlpito (un pequeño balcón desde donde hablaba el sacerdote en la misa), pero fue eliminado por encontrarse en mal estado.
This is the Admon (replacing the removed pulpit). Built entirely of marble, this is the place where masses are read.
Do you know what the petmanten deacon is? Well, he is the assistant to the head priest of the church. This position was occupied for a long time by the renowned sculptor Erasmo González Ojeda who dedicated a large part of his work to this church.

Este es el Admón (en sustitución del púlpito eliminado). Construido totalmente de mármol, en este lugar es en donde se da lectura en las misas.
¿Saben lo que es el Diácono petmanten? Pues es el ayudante del cura principal de la iglesia. Este cargo lo ocupó por mucho tiempo el reconocido escultor Erasmo González Ojeda quién dedicó gran parte de sus obras a esta iglesia.

In this work he depicted the cross of St. James the Apostle, the tobacco fields and the 12 stars are for the 12 apostles.
En esta obra representó la cruz de Santiago de Apóstol, las vegas de tabaco y las 12 estrellas son por los 12 apóstoles.
On this wall, which is the back of the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, the sculptor made this beautiful representation in 67 pieces that he made at home and then put them together like a jigsaw puzzle by placing them on this wall. They are ears of wheat from which the bread and grapes from which the wine is made. The hands are those of him holding a host in his hands and the initials JHS: Jesus Man Saviour.

En esta pared que es el fondo de la Capilla del santísimo sacramento el escultor realizó esta hermosa representación en 67 piezas que elaboró en su casa y luego las fue armando como rompecabezas al colocarlas en este muro. Son espigas de trigo de donde sale el pan y las uvas con las que se hace el vino. Las manos son las de él aguantando una ostia en sus manos y las iniciales JHS: Jesús Hombre Salvador.

This medallion was made in concrete and is the image of a risen Christ.
Este medallón fue realizado en concreto y es la imagen de un cristo resucitado.
This work is the visitation of the virgin with the angel Gabriel and the author was inspired by the face of his wife to create it. What a beautiful detail, don't you think?
Esta obra es la visitación de la virgen con el ángel Gabriel y el autor se inspiró en el rostro de su esposa para crearlo. ¡Qué detalle tan hermoso este!, ¿no creen?

This has been a unique experience where my admiration and surprise were present in every moment of my presence in that place. To see and almost touch with my hands objects that keep so much history and are perfectly preserved are privileges that I never imagined I would have that day when out of curiosity I entered this place of peace.
My most sincere thanks go to Margarita and Cuquito who offered to help me and so lovingly gave me so much valuable information. Luckily my baby was asleep during the whole tour, which made it possible for me to be 100% attentive.
