"Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life." - Terry Pratchett
It's been a bit warmish here over the last few days with more to come. It's tolerable and not that bad...and if you believe that you're fucken bonkers. It's hellish...if hell has an air conditioner of course. Basically, exiting the house feels like walking into an oven.
Luckily I have a really great air conditioner that's ducted throughout the house with controllable zones and fortunately I'm not back at work yet so have been sitting around in the cool reading, watching shows and doing some writing...but I've had to go out now and then and on those occasions...it's hellish! (Except in my truck because it also has a legit air conditioner.)
That image above shows the outside temperature when I got into my truck yesterday after being in hospital. That's 48°C (118°F) - Kind of hot. A lot hot. But that's Australia, my part of it anyway. In other parts it's hot also with a few fires raging which is the big concern really, they have a way of getting out of control here and are quite devastating. Conversely, Far North Queensland is expecting deluges of rain and a potential damaging cyclone so yep, the diversity of Australia strikes again. My family are up there preparing for the cyclone, one never knows how bad it'll be so preparation is always done regardless.
I had a shit night's sleep last night mostly due to the hospital scenario that had happened earlier but it was a hot night, (that temperature shown below was at 1:03am in the morning) and the temperature never got below 31°C all night. Thanks to the air conditioner it was cool but then it gets too cold and then...well it's not conducive to a good sleep especially combined with the rough night I had due to the health thing. Two hours sleep isn't anywhere near enough.

Australia is a land of extremes in many ways and certainly with the weather; it's very large so climates can vary so much around the country as evidenced by the heatwave my southern area is experiencing in contrast to the cyclonic conditions in parts of the tropical north.
We make it work though, we just get on with things, although I'd not go as far as saying I enjoy the temperature when it gets so high; it's uncomfortable and if it lasts too long I get cranky. Crankier, some may say.

I had a little message chat with my niece in Finland not long after she woke up today and she asked about the weather here. It was minus 17°C in her part of Finland at the time at the time and man what a contrast that is to here!
I wonder what it's like in your part of the world currently.
If you'd like to do a photo of your current weather or simply explain what's going on in your location please feel free to do so below or just comment generally if that's more suitable for you.

Wow! We had 40C here in the UK a few years ago and that was pretty tough for us as most homes do not have A/C. It must be expensive to keep cool when it's hotter than that. I guess most people know how to cope with local conditions, but we Brits seem to panic at any extreme temperatures.
Need more !BEER
I was in the UK for five weeks in 2018 and for much of it the temperature was 29-30 and ulit was hellish. We stayed in B&B's, old ones and most had no AC. I had to buy a small fan from Tesco, then left it at the last place we stayed before we flew to Finland. (Was fucken hot there too!)
So, I understand your comment, 40° would be terrible. Beer is the cure though.
It's costly to cool my house, my AC hasn't been off for two days straight and it sucks the power/money. I have a good solar array so during the day isn't so bad though.
Anyway, I appreciate your comment mate, thanks.
Solar is an obvious solution in those circumstances as you will generally have some sun when it's warm, apart from at night obviously. I've worked in some offices where people like to set the A/C really cold and I find that uncomfortable. I can generally operate okay between 18-22C. We are spoiled these days as in olden times people had less of these comforts.
It makes us seem really soft, something Australians have traditionally not been. But yeah, I guess progress right?
I keep my AC set on 23° in summer (it feels like a fridge inside) and will go 19° in winter (gets down to 0° here at night) but I'm not huge on the eater in winter. I get too hot. My wife wants it hotter of course. Bloody girls!
My other half just got an electric blanket so she is snug on the couch watching TV in the evenings. We just need to be sensible about energy usage.
I'm not sure what power costs there but know we pay exorbitantly here so assume it's no different. We're pretty good with power usage. I also have solar arrays on all my houses so get reduced bills due to back to the grid input. One is only used during the day so I rarely pay a power bill on it! The investment in the arrays and systems have paid themselves off quickly.
Peak rate is 30p/kWh on my tariff that gives me 15p for export. I get a few hours at 8.5p in the morning when I can charge the battery or the EV. Even in winter we can run off the battery all day, but then we use gas for heating.
-17? +48? I have no idea why people don't move house!

Today we have 3C and rain. A bit grey I admit, but far more conducive to not freezing or frying your ass off.
I'd be ok with 3° right now. Good scone eating weather!
This winter we have snow. I don't really mind it too much. As long as it doesn't snow again after I am done digging snow. In that case it feels like a waste.
They say, winter is coming...Looks like it already got there.
Digging snow seems like good exercise.
I like the warm weather but I think yours is too hot for everyday life. If I was on vacation and beside a pool in a resort it would be ok though. I hope it cools down significantly for you soon.

You can have all the warm weather if you like, I'll wrap it up and send it to you as a gift. 😊
That sounds hellish. Here it’s friggin cold and we’ve had snow in our part of England. Not a lot though, it’s since thawed out.
Funny how i was grabbing this screenshot @steevc replied to an earlier conversation.
I'd be happy for 3° at the moment...one can always put a jacket on. Right now it's 41° here at 19:20. It's getting windy tomorrow and still 40° so high fire risk. Hopefully not though.
Fingers crossed that’s not what happens.
Fires in Victoria currently, a small one here in South Australia but it was dealt with. We'll see, the country doesn't need another 2019/20 disaster though.
Fingers crossed it never reaches those proportions again
We all say that but the reality is that it will likely do so. The government don't permit burn-offs for undergrowth anymore after winter/spring so it builds up, dies off and gets dry and crispy. It's not necessarily the trees that burn when a fire comes though initially, it's the undergrowth and if it's thick enough the fire gets hot, lingers and lights up the trees.
They say the lack of burn-offs are to save the environment but the planet would normally do its own burn-offs, lighting strikes with late spring storms anyway. Humans go put them out to protect houses on the fringe of scrubland and so the undergrowth builds up and up causing future problems.
Sorry, a long comment just to say, I agree.
There is sadly going to be an element of, it’s going to happen no matter what, the planet is getting warmer etc etc.
Foggy but not that dense for what is hopefully my last ride home in this Prime Mover. Delivery eas in Orlando FLA.

The final countdown to the handover. Nice! I'm hoping for an end of an era post on it when you can.
Good luck...and don't drop hot sauce on your nuts, it rarely goes well.
Fuuuukkkk Meeeee!!!
This is the copy and paste of what I just had to send out to about 6 people that have shown interest in my truck. And the struggle continues. FML
What? It fell over? What the fuck is going on? Do you have the ability to send it to an auction house rather than sell privately?
Considering that 🥺
I'm not quite sure how it works there but I know there's a few auction places here that pay outright and then sell it to make their money. Consignment is also possible and it's sold by auction. It might be worth some investigation.
FINALLY!!! The "TRUCK" Has come back to... Be...
SOLD !
The exchange is to take place Saturday Morning. 22.5k
Here it is a little bit colder. But I don’t mind, we don’t have snow very often. So I try to enjoy it to the max.
I'd be there making snow ammunition and hurling it and whomever passed by. Snow wars. Like Star Wars but with snow.
May the snow be with you 😀
Lol.
Yeh that's a tad warm x_x It's been a thankfully long stint since we've been anywhere near that temperature (I can't remember what the hottest I've got up to is, whether it was that or "just" 45).
We're currently fluctuating madly between 30 and 38 over each week here, some of my poor friends are probably sick (there's a handful of them that seem to be very badly affected by whatever they consider too large a variation and that varies between them). Fortunately we got our aircon fixed (again, apparently the fan motor giving out within not long in the grand scheme of being installed was "bizarre" to the guy who came out and fixed it, reckoned he hadn't seen that happen in 15 years of working with that brand or something to that effect) so have only had to survive a couple of 35C days without.
It's funny, back in the day there was no air conditioning. I grew up in a house in which we didn't have it although it was one of those homestead houses of solid brick with a wide verandah all the way around to keep the sun off the walls. We survived.
Times change though, building techniques - loads of houses without eaves and verandas, paper-thin walls and all.
Luckily you got your AC fixed and can be more comfortable now. I'm not looking forward to going back to work in the heat but for now I have a (no sugar) Zooper Dooper, AC and life's good. :)
We were mostly fine because we have a house that was built in the late 1890s so the main part of the house has very high ceilings and shade trees around it so we can get up to 38C without aircon but because it's all hot air past 35 it's only tolerable (not particularly pleasant but you're fine). It took us way too long (because expensive) to put aircons into the kids' rooms but they really needed it (those rooms get HOT in summer and COLD in winter).
Yeh I think if we lived in one of those houses you described we'd probably die. Our old house was single brick with low ceilings and probably built with the expectation that the home owners would "just install aircon" (kind of a requirement really has the ceilings were way too low to safely have a ceiling fan and it got really freaking hellishly hot in summer, wasn't too bad in winter at least).
The oldies are the best, the house I grew up in was built circa 1902...bloody cold in winter but we had open fires.
Looking at all the comments, looks like you don't have many people to keep you company on the other side of the world. Everyone is freezing in the top part of the world. I lived in Asia for a long time, but I have never experienced 40 degrees, that's crazy. Has it always been that bad or has it got worse in recent years due to global warming?
We're currently 6 degrees and my neck of the woods never gets too cold because we're by the sea. We never get any snow, maybe a snowflake or two, and a bit of sleet, that's about it.
I'm the only one here melting.
It's always been the same sort of temperatures although the seasons seemed delayed a little. February and March will be hotter more consistently but in 2025 that went all the way to almost the end of May which was unheard-of prior. A shift in when seasons occur I guess. I'm not sure if it's the "global warming" thing that seems so popular with corporations and governments although science clearly shows that the planet ebbs and flows and this might be a situation caused by that.
Still dark here, so no good pic for ya. However, I do have a snapshot of the Weather channel app and it is a nice 32°F. Supposed to get warmer today then the bottom drops out in a couple days.
32F seems quite delightful, hopefully you have something nice planned for the day.
PLan to get out for a walk when it warms up a little bit more. Other than that, it is mostly grind this morning then if body and mind allow, do some more exercise this afternoon. Maybe work on my garage a little. Hope you get some relief soon. That shit is Iraq hot.
Sandbox hot for sure, but no real need to operate outside the wire and in the heat; glorious AC at home. Just been relaxing as I'm back to work Monday. 🥴
For sure. Enjoy!
All wonderful snow land here! Lily is happy, I had a stressful day yesterday, flights being cancelled and such, but all good now. We'll be forced to enjoy more family time while we witness the downfall of civilization in Germany by the winds of "Elli". Funny. The alias I use on Hive for my girlfriend is Ellie. I'll have to let her know...
I'm glad that you're getting some rest! It's not a good idea to be hard with one's back.
That's a great snap, the way the snow is caught in the light, sort of eerie. Are you going back to work soon?
I'm stuck in Germany for a few days. They just gave me a new flight for tonight, trying to organize that. Going to be fun! It's a real snow storm around here, and I don't really want to get stranded with the little one.
The cellphone I bought does nice pictures. I already did 2 posts featuring them, if you're interested:
https://peakd.com/hive-194913/@beelzael/snow-t8em38
https://peakd.com/hive-150015/@beelzael/winter-pics-are-almost-bw-by-default
I'll probably write a whole post about the cellphone, as a few people had asked me about some feedback about it. So far, it's a great choice!
I'll keep an eye out for the phone image post and am happy to hear it's worked out well for you
Now that's really hot!!! In Argentina I used to live in temperatures like that and because of my low blood pressure and the lack of air conditioning, I died every summer, I suffered too much!
Here it has been a bit cold but it is the season for that, minimum of 5 degrees and right now we are at 11 degrees. A pleasant temperature for winter.
Dying every summer doesn't seem a lot of fun, but coming back from it is the best way. Who wants to stay dead?
11° seems quite acceptable.
At the end of January and February I was resurrected!!! Like a phoenix!😂
It's bloooody cold here! -5 this morning when I brought the kid to school, usually it's -2, -3 that's too much! Everything is white frozen
In summer when I get out of the office and jump in the car it usually says 42°, a few days reached 46°, glad to have air conditioning... I just wonder how much humidity you got there? Here in summer it gets to 90% during the day and with 34° it feels like 40° on your skin
I'm my part of Australia it doesn't get very humid, certainly not 90% which is a lot. We get the odd days here and there when it's humid but usually it's a dry heat.
Cold there, -5 which would make it difficult to get started in the morning I think.
Dry heat gives me no real issues unless under the direct sun, Sicily in August-July felt like a spring here if you stayed at home without AC
Yeah, I just run when I get in/out of the car 😂
Thankfully someone came up with an invention called the air conditioner guy?
Dang, that is hot. We get maybe one or two of those sorts of days per year if we are unlucky. Sometimes a few more. It never helps when the air quality is low due to the fires. We have been getting a lot of that the past few summers as well. Crappy thing is when it is that hot the breeze doesn't even help. It's like having some fat POS just breathing on you non stop!
Hot wind sucks! That's what it's going to be like today which is why the fire warnings are so high. We're in fire ban season from the end of October to April with various rules and all, but when it's windy that's when things get very dangerous.
Stay safe!
48! That's just a little warm. And -17 for your niece is just a bit chilly! It never gets too cold in this part of Japan. It's around 5 right now. The past few summers we have been getting to 40 and a few degrees beyond, which is just brutal when combined with the high humidity of this country. Most summer school sports have moved indoors or been cancelled because the heat stroke death rate has skyrocketed for the under 18 age group. I can't imagine how much worse it'd be if we got up to 48!
It's a high heat, and not even the highest it goes, some parts of the country are up into the low 50's! Not near to hear I live fortunately.
I didn't realise it got to around 40 in Japan, mmkbew it could get hot but not that hot; makes sense to have indoor sporting facilities.
It's also like being in hell over here. The heat sometimes mingles with the harmattan, it's partly harmattan and partly hot, very hot. Sleeping has been difficult. No air conditioner for now, but the standing or ceiling fan does the job.
Sleeping when it's so hot is sometimes difficult. I get more grumpy when it's hot and when it's hot and I can't sleep...more grumpy again.
48 degrees is too much for us. In Cuba, the record temperature is 38.8 degrees Celsius.
Right now, we have quite pleasant weather, with the sun not too strong and a comfortable temperature of 29 degrees Celsius.
As for cyclones, the season when these meteorological events occur is from 1 June to 30 November, and they cause a lot of damage, such as Hurricane Melissa, which affected us this year.
Hopefully the temperature will improve.
Cheers and best regards.
Mother nature unleashes hellish weather events sometimes, hurricanes and things, and there's not much a human can do but ride it out. People usually die. At least with hot weather it doesn't have that destructive force.
The maximum temperature I have ever been at is +45°C, and the minimum -25°C. And all that in the city where I live.
I would probably survive your 48°C, there on the beach by the ocean 😀
When I left for work this morning, it was -8°C, and as it had snowed all night, the streets and sidewalks were covered in snow.
That looks like a lot of potential for snow shovelling, good exercise I'm told.
Ours was still sitting between 25- 32° at the moment with most days being partly cloudy, but even during summer, temperature won't go above 42°.
Do you like the temperature to be hotter or cooler?
Hotter maybe. I can still function properly even when it's hot, but always find myself shivering when the AC is set at 20°, even when wearing a jacket.
Fair enough, hopefully you live in a hot location then.
It's near the equator so temperature is often hot, but was also often visited by typhoons.
I figured something like that.
In my part of Austria it was -10C when I went to work this morning at about 7 o clock... If I had to pick between that heat you guys have there and the freaking cold here I guess I'd pick the cold... I still miss summer though.
I've never been in -10 weather. It snows here but never gets so cold and the snow is not in my part of the country. So snow seems novel to me but I think the reality of it would be different.
The heat is pretty terrible. I'm home from work currently but when I go back next week it'll hit home. Life has to go on though and we manage it somehow.
