I often find myself in a cafe straight after my working day ends as a sort of gap between my work day which can be super-complicated and heading home. I have a coffee and relax a bit, maybe call a friend on the phone or text and just kind of de-stress...or maybe deworkerise my brain.
Do you folks do that as well?
I have coffee at home and it's a comfortable place to be, but I like to watch the world go by a little, observe people and (usually) make up stories about them as I people-watch...so a cafe is a good place to do that.
If you'd like to tell me how you switch off from the work you and the personal you feel free to do so in the comments below. Do you go for coffee, take a walk, a bike ride? What's up y'all?

Having a kid doesn't allow much free break time, when I'm at office work I gotta go straight home then get ready for dinner and put him in the bed... When I'm home working, as soon as I end I shut down the pc and go out for a walk, there's a railroad pretty close, I like to walk and watch some trains passing, i wonder where they going, what they are transporting
Walking is good, I do that too...and bike riding. I'm going to do a post about the latter at some stage - got a new bike.
Oh biking is an other great thing, I have been doing it a lot too... A post would be interesting, I'm curious to see that bike (mountain bike?) and speaking of, it reminds me a fresh new bike I bought (a serious one and not cheap) like 4 years ago, then some fuckers stole it from the garage in the night, it was not even 1 month old
Yeah, sort of a mountain bike. Twin adjustable front shocks and 2-8 gears (16). Been using Stava to track my rides, keeping average speed up, finding elevation and all. Enjoying it.
Humans are assholes huh? Bike thefts happen all the time here. I have a lock but wouldn't leave my bike where I can't see it and my house/garages are fairly secure so it's unlikely I'd lose mine. I have insurance though, just in case.
My mother also uses strava for the bike, it's good... 16 gears is enough, I used to have 8x3 every time but you never use them all
We didn't have insurance on theft and on rent we couldn't change the garage so I used a huge lock and chain, and chained it to some big bed slats behind the car, they still did it, that was depressing to wake up with that present
I commute to work by bicycle. 30+ minutes of cycling helps to clear my head perfectly.
And it's also a good start of the day.
I can really tell the difference between a day at the office and one working from home. And yes, I know I can also go for a bicycle ride after finishing when I work from home, but somehow I just don't.
That's the way to do it. I wish I could ride to work but I have to be highly mobile when there so i can react as needed so I have to drive. I just got a new bike and have been riding a lot, lovin' it.
I'm lucky we have a shower at the office. Else I wouldn't have done it eitehr.
Cool! What kind of bicycle have you bought?
I got a mountain bike thingy, goes well.
I usually had a decent drive after work, so I would just drive straight home. However, I would often do the opposite and stop for coffee and a small breakfast at a Denny's on the way into work in the early morning before the rush crowd came in. It allowed me to collect my thoughts and get my head ready for the work day before finishing my drive into work.
When I was in the service it was straight to work and straight home. When deployed on ship, I would often grab a cup of coffee and head topside to watch the sun come up and look out across the ocean and enjoy the calm for a short while before the masses would start screwing about.
That's exactly why I do it, thought collection. It also helps me leave work at work rather than bringing it home...although I do that too sometimes.
Legit, I hear ya.
Bringing it home sucks. Most times, I would get home and find something to work on to decompress.
I make ammunition a lot, good to stock up and the repetitive process and concentration required helps hold work out of my brain.
Flows well into being able to blow off some steam when squeezing triggers too.
Indeedy.
At the end of the day, after finishing my work, I usually head home. After finishing all my work, I do a 5-minute meditation that involves breathing in, holding it, and exhaling it before going to bed. Even with the kids, home is important to me as a comfortable zone at night.
Meditation is an important things and if done properly can bring a person a nice feeling of peace and balance. Nice work indeed.
This is so true.. I have exactly the same thinking as well (maybe not the making up stories part, hehe), and sometimes a small part of me feels guilty for spending so much on something that’s available at home for a much lower cost.
There's something nice about the right cafe, helps relax me after a tough day, or a not so tough day.
Yeah the ambience is what makes the difference! :D
Usually, it's going to the gym for a HIIT class, sometimes a spin (cycling) class, and then playing pickleball with gym friends.
On days I'm not going to the gym, I take a hot shower right after work to unwind and relax.
The gym is a good option. I used to go all the time but have a set up at home; I don't like the environments at gyms to be honest...too many people looking at themselves in mirrors and grunting while doing single rep sets for their Instagram posts.
Having a home gym setup sounds nice. I tend to get lazy if working out by myself. The classes help me because the instructors push us, help our form, and the group peer pressure is good for me.
I know what you mean about the gym environment. Fortunately we don't get much of that in our classes, but I see a lot of it in the open gym area. That's not for me either.
Walking. Works most of the time. Putting the cellphone in the back pocket and consciously leaving it there, letting my mind run rampant until it calms down a little after breathing some fresh air and looking into the mountains.
Biking is very similar to that, but usually with music on my ears.
I sometimes go out to eat alone. Sit in a corner. Observe. Take notes. Make plans. Putting my thoughts into order, doodling argumentation strings. I like enjoying things just by myself, as my life is usually very social these days, with the restaurant below and Lily living with me.
Putting the mobile phone away is a good idea, too many people have their face glued to it, and their brain, and I think it's unhealthy.
Me too. I do this a lot when I travel for work and get great benefit from it.
When I need to relax or de-stress, I usually try to go somewhere where I can walk quietly, alone, with no one else around. Looking at new landscapes relaxes my mind, or sometimes I try to talk to someone specific about anything, anything that takes my mind off my own problems. In certain circumstances, I also meditate.
I bet you have Richard Clayderman playing softly in the background to soothe your soul...if I heard that I'd want to kill someone...probably Richard Clayderman himself. 😆
It could also be classical violin music or Tibetan sounds.🤣
No, please don't kill anyone!😂
Kill me now, please!
Right now! Lots of Tibetan sounds! It will kill your ears.🤣
Jeezus, you were serious with the Tibetan music?
May it kill your ears, yes 😆
No. I'm not hearing it!😂
Every morning on a workday, when I go to work by organized transport, I walk from my apartment to the place where the bus that takes me 30km leaves.
The whole way is downhill and it takes me about 20 minutes.
When I return home from work, I also walk from the place where the bus "unloads" me to my apartment, changing the route a little, but the whole way is uphill and it takes me about 30 minutes.
That walk feels like a reset of my head in both directions.
When I go to work, I focus on my work obligations, and when I return home, I try to forget about them.
Along the way, I observe people, parks, dogs and cats, flowers and green plants in the gardens, cars.
Walking is a good way to declutter the mind. The problem for many is that they do so while their face is stuck to a phone screen and social media.
My wife and I work in separate buildings, but they are about 100 meters away from each other, so unless one of us has something else going on we ride to and from work together each day. That drive one way is about a half hour which is perfect because it gives us time to deworkerise as you say. There are often times we don't even talk on the way home, we just sit and unpack, then when we get home we can have a proper conversation without the stress of the work day interfering.
Sometimes some quiet time is exactly what's required.
Work, what work? :P
Writing. Day dreaming.
Often thinking about day dreaming and the male fantasy of "How would I react if a rocket came out of that alleyway right now?"
Spending your time wisely then huh?
I hit the gym if not go straight to home. As much as I want to, my travel time goes around 2-4 hours combined. That was more of a weekend thing for me.
You must be ripped! Fucken abs of steel and biceps as big as your head! 😉
Just fit enough to stay healthy. I mean, were just getting older by the day, and working out at least let me move like in my peak years.
Phew... well yes, I often drink coffee while I work!
Legit.
Having coffee outside the office helps me transition to the real world. I really enjoy coffee and when I commute by plane, I like to serve my coffee with a view at the airport lanes and watch the planes. For some reason travelling gives me so much energy and having a coffee it helps with awakening my mind and make it thinking without any limits.
I like airports, always so many different people and behaviours to observe.
After work-school, I usually go to market to look whether there is anything to buy or not 🫠
That's a good plan, browsing shops!
If I'm bored in the house I'll take a walk nearby the shore 🫶
Sounds good!
