Talisker Skye and Alexa

Ever since hubby has introduced my brother in law Henry to whisky, he's been expanding his collection. Hubby has become the biggest beneficiary as my sister often invites us over for dinner and the guys end up with a drink (or two) afterwards. The other night we went over for dinner again, and Henry treated hubby to his latest purchase.

Talisker Distillery is on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, which is most famous for its beautiful rugged landscape. It is connected to the main Scottish island by a short ferry ride or a bridge making it a very popular destination for visitors. I actually went to Talisker Distillery some years ago, but that was after we had visited quite a few distilleries in Scotland. And a bit like Thai temples or Italian cathedrals, once you've seen a few they're all the same!!

Anyway, back to the whisky. The Talisker Skye is a single malt, 45% ABV, matured in American oak casks, and has a peaty smoky flavour. The marketing pitch behind it is all about the sea, and the maritime landscape "fresh citrus, sweet smoke, peppery spice and traditional Talisker maritime notes."

Peaty whisky isn't normally hubby's cup of tea (or whisky should I say), but he was very surprised with the aroma. First impression was that it wasn't as overpowering as some of the other smoky whisky he's tried before, and surprisingly it was easy on the palate. He didn't mind it at all. Henry said this was on offer in one of the supermarkets, reduced from £40+ to around £25 so he picked up a bottle immediately. Hubby agreed this was a good value whisky at this price, but not at the original price.

Hubby let me try a little sip as I needed the whole experience to write this whisky tasting post😊. Normally I don't like the smell of whisky, it's like they all knock me in the head immediately, but this one was a bit more gentle even though it had a peppery note. I only had a little sip, and even for me, I felt it wasn't as sharp as other ones I tried. I could taste a hint of a sweet honey flavour, but there wasn't an awful lot of after taste, it had a short finish.

Henry bought another bottle of Talisker during his previous cruise holiday called the Dark Storm. You can see at the top of the box it says Travel Exclusive which means it's only sold at airports or cruise ships. That's also a single malt, but is more intense than the Talisker Skye. He hasn't opened that bottle yet, but no doubt hubby will be there when he does.

The other thing I found out when writing this post is something called the Talisker Tasting Experience via Alexa. Hubby bought an Alexa this week on Black Friday sales despite my minor objection (men and their toys 🙃). Apparently you can ask Alexa to open Talisker tasting and it will launch a video and sound track that takes you through the whole drinking experience and the background of the whisky. The service was launched in 2018, so it's been around for a while, but we've only had Alexa for a few days, so only learnt about it now. I wouldn't be surprised if other distilleries have the same service. Do you know about this Alexa thing for other whiskies?

Hi, it's a pleasure to read your content for the first time. I heard about this Alexa service from you, but no wonder, every day I discover something new and amazing 😅 I really appreciate that you have tried Whisky to be able to speak well about it and live the full experience. I think that with this drink I would also dare, because there are others that I do not tolerate. I like it all very much ✌️

Hive it really great that you learn so many new things from different people every day.

I don't drink whisky so only tried a little bit to see what it's like, and to join in a bit of the fun😀

I'm curious, how does it taste hahaha

mild and a hint of sweet 😉

haha you can

I love the art on the whiskey bottle boxes aswell as the logo just beneath the cap on the bottle..

It looks like proper whiskey, even though I am not a fan of hard liquor this does look.... Elegant...

I'll be doing beer tasting this holiday😎👀🍻🍻🍻 quite keen.

!PIZZA

Good catch on that logo! Now you mention it, it actually's quite cool and clever as it looks like the shape of Isle of Skye.

Enjoy your beer tasting!

I had a Talisker recently at a whisky bar and it was very nice. Not sure exactly which one it was. We have an older Alexa, but haven't used it recently. I know they do various apps, but I didn't get to into that. I mostly just asked it questions. There are so many web sites and apps these days and the whisky industry is very competitive so they have to get into every trend. There do seem to more ads from them on TV these days.

Cheers

I'm still getting used to have Alexa around, not too keen having "someone" intrude into my life to be honest, so at the moment just using her as a clock and to listen to the radio, both which we needed in the living room.

For some reason we seem to watch BBC more nowadays, so are missing out on the ads, will have to switch over sometime as I do like to see what Xmas ads they come up with

I don't buy the theories that these devices are spying on us all the time and they can be useful. I think they can be a boon for blind people.

I don't watch a lot of TV, but there are a few things on Channel 4 we watch so I see some ads. The perfumes ones are the most surreal.

Good point about the blind, I can see how valuable these devices can be for them

Gentle whisky is something I love and that price is such a good deal. I recently browsed through whiskey here but none of them are quite affordable and they're pretty basic, like they just have Jameson, Jim beam, those kind of name brands.

Coffee and whisky!!!!

I guess it's easier for companies to import these well known brands in larger volumes instead of smaller brands which needs more effort to market. Also a lot of smaller distilleries don't produce that much volume and their output is easily snapped up by the local market or the main whisky drinking countries.

If you're ever in Japan, Singapore or Taiwan, they have a good selection there, all are top 10 whisky drinking countries.

Reading your post I realize I have 0 knowledge of whisky 😬
Btw, the boxes look lovely :)))

Reading your post I realize I have 0 knowledge of whisky

I guess like Mr Mipiano, he probably picks up a lot of music knowledge from you to make him sound like an expert in front of friends who have no music knowledge 😄

To sound like an expert 😂

Well, he could easily do that, as the two of us ( with Mipiano Kid 🎻) provide enough of that matter 🎶🎶🎶 😂

So cool… didn’t know that was a thing for Alexa. Never visited a distillery for whiskey. Will do one day.
Although I’m more a rum kind of girl hehehe 🤭
Have you been many times to Scotland?
Enjoy your evening and have a wonderful Sunday.

We drove around parts of Scotland for a week some years ago, would like to go back again in the summer and further up north, or even to the Shetland Islands which are nearer to Norway than London.

Enjoy what's left of your weekend!

That’s wonderful to hear… we will be there end of the year… exploring all areas 😉😁😎 can’t wait.

Thank you so much, enjoy yours too. Here it just went into Monday already hehehe actually already 41 minutes in.
Good evening I should say 👋🏻😊 enjoy the new week @livinguktaiwan

You guys back for Christmas? That would be lovely to spend time with the family, though it gets rather depressing in winter as you probably know already. Hope you still get to visit lots of places.

Btw, there's a London meetup followed up with a gig afterwards on 15th if you're interested and timing is right

Let say we are moving out of Spain next month 😉🤓 and going allllll the way north. ❄️☃️❄️☃️ Country number 6 for me. And it will be coldddddd for sure. Such a big difference.
We are visiting hubbies family in England with Christmas, maybe even all the way into the new year. Depending on how fast we find a rental remote where we want to be. (My family is further away in different countries.)

Aawww that’s a shame @livinguktaiwan, as we would be close by. But our plane only leaves Spain the 19th. Maybe next time. 😉
Have an awesome week.

From Spain to the north! That's really a big change, sounds like from sea to ski! Hopefully it will be fun and a nice experience for you guys!

Yep… a big change. Even for hubby who is English. 🤓😎
It will be a great new experience and so many new things.
Thanks @livinguktaiwan

Cheers Stick up boys!!!

That's a fun hobby/activity for your husband and brother in law to share. Bonding over whiskey - that's excellent. Nice find with it being on sale too. This is tue first I'm hearing about Alexa but it's a cool feature.

Another of my other brother in law also enjoys whisky, he and hubby are drinking buddies. The fourth one also used to enjoy an occasional drink sometimes but had to stop due to health issues. Now they've introduced my kid newphew to it as well. We bought him a 21 year old minituare whiskey for his birthday and graduation present this year. So yes, lots of common interest in the family.

Dark storm for me 👌🥃

I shall tell the guys, I'm sure they'll be pleased to hear that. Thanks!

Nice - I love Talisker, and the location and setting of the distillery is great - not that far from Dunvegan Castle, one of my fav places in Scotland !! As said, its quite peaty - which is an acquired taste, but I really like it!
!LUV

We sort of stumbled onto Talisker Distillery the other year, it was one of the few that was opened in March. But it was the third one we visited during that week in Scotland, so I don't have much recollection of it!

Lol - you should go to the island of Islay - it has 9 distilleries, and its common to visit many of them in the same day - you need a designated driver though ! And they are all great whiskies too !

Designated driver would be me!! I don't drink, so suits me fine, I'd get plenty of content to write about!!

That is pretty cool about the Alexa thing. I will have to keep that in mind if we ever decide to buy one. This sounds like a Scotch that I would like to try sometime. I haven't really gotten into the read peaty stuff yet. I am working my way towards that. I think I should be good given how smokey bourbon can be, but then again you never know!

It's pretty innovative using Alexa to educate consumers about the product, great marketing tool.

I can't really comment on the taste given that I don't really drink it, but it would be interesting to see who the smoky scotch compares to the smokey bourbon when you get round to try it

Yeah, I will have to keep that in mind! I have seen commercials for some of the really peaty offerings and I have to admit, I am a little scared to try them!

Thanks. I personally haven't tried Jameson as I don't drink, but we have been to their distillery in Dublin, and my husband did the whisky tasting there.
