Season Hunt Challenge: Shine A Little Light

Theme for this hunt:

LIGHTS & CANDLES

🪔 Lights 💡

The first light I want to mention is called a Himalayan Salt Lamp. Not a fancy looking lamp but it gives a soft glow when turned on. These salt lamps are touted to help purify the inside air. I purchased it at a local Health Food Store.

There are pros and cons as to if the lamp has any benefits to one’s health but I like to use it as a night light in the hallway.

In the last one hundred years, since the late 1800s when Edison brought the first electric lights to parts of Manhattan, we have come a long way in getting light in our homes with a flip of a switch.

I still remember as a child of homes being light after dark with only by a kerosene lamp.

This is an antique lamp that was used on ships. It hangs in the Souris Lighthouse Lantern Room.

The historic lighthouse presents an interesting display of marine and fishery artifacts and I checked it out one day during the summer.

Another ship’s light at the Souris Lighthouse. I don’t know if the lamps were fuelled with whale oil or kerosene.

For a more modern light we have lamplights like this one lighting the Montague waterfront with the use of electricity.

🕯 Candles 🕯

There are all kinds of candles made from beeswax, soy and paraffin. Over the years, I have received some fancy ones enhanced with essential oils for fragrance.

There has been talk of the dangers of the toxics in candles harming the lungs if breathed in too long.

I don’t know how much toxics candles release into the air and I only use candles for light if, for some reason, the electricity temporarily shuts down.

Small paraffin non-toxic candles are seen on birthday cakes where the birthday person makes a wish before the cake is cut and blows out the candles. The norm is one candle for every year is placed on top of the cake. If all the candles can be blown out with one breath the wish is suppose to be granted.

One year friends surprised me with this cake on a special birthday. The candles were easy to blow out for the host did not have many and only put a few candles on top of the cake.🎂

Luckily there wasn’t a candle on the cake for every year I’ve been on this planet or they would have started a fire. 😀

Sort:

Lighting up age on cakes now requires a fire extinguisher close to hand!

Himalayan Salt Lamp melted in the heat here, another that did not work effectively as my son found out 😆

Paraffin lamps are still used with citronella oil mixed in for when sitting outdoors into the evening to keep mosquitos at bay.

Lovely selection and walk through time with lamps and candle theme Jo.

Wow! I didn’t realize the salt lamp could melt….not enough heat here. 😆

One summer’s day I was at a friend’s place where they were playing darts in a garage. The host lit one of those citronella candles (to keep flies away) and the fumes started to affect everyone. I guess they would be okay outdoors but not in a closed area.

Thanks Joan for generosity and reblog.

Have a wonderful rest of the week my friend. 💕

Salt lamp fortunately was on a wooden plate, also not good around electronic equipment I believe.

Citronella outdoors is fine, had incense sticks I tried indoors also a no go, well not for me.

Have a great day and enjoy the snow!

I think my mother has also such a Himalayan salt lamp somewhere. I remember they really give a nice soft light.
You're right, it's not such a long time ago when we used oil lamps which were not so easy to turn on using just a switch.

When I saw the candles in your article, I noticed what I forgot in my article: the candles 😂
I think we have had the last birthday cakes when our kids turned 16 a couple of years ago.

Nice post for the Season Hunt, Jo, much luck in the lucky drawing 🤞

Hi Hannes. I like The salt lights whether they help purify the air or not. They have been on the go here for quite awhile. I see them in a lot of other stores besides the Health Food store and they come in different shapes and colors.

When I think of my childhood and how far we have come with technology, it is unbelievable. Not only the oil lamps but the old crank telephones have gone by the wayside. I actually have one of those old oil lamps here but didn’t dig it out for the challenge.

Birthday cakes are important here, no matter how old one is. 😝 Hubby requests a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting for his birthday next month.

Thanks for your kindness and everything, dear Hannes, 🤗

Have a wonderful rest of the week. 🌞

Hi Jo,

I haven't seen any of these lamps in quite a while, or maybe I just didn't notice it.

Oh yes, in my parents house there are also some of these old things, and I believe in my father's workshop there's such an oil lamp on a shelf.

I'm not a fan of cakes, at least not of sweet cakes and this carrot cake with cream cheese frosting sounds delicious to me 😋 The kids still get a birthday cake, of course.

All my pleasure, dear Jo, I'm wishing you also a nice Tuesday and hopefully not too cold rest of the week 🤗🌞

!PIZZA and !BEER served with !LUV - sounds like a nice dinner :)

Wow, the birthday candles! Now why didn't I think of that? Great find there. I've also read of Himalayan Salt Lamp and its air purifying benefits. Cool you have that on your hallway. Those lamps of old brought me back to my own childhood days in the province when we only have kerosene lamps. Trip to memory lane haha.

Great hunt trophies @redheadpei. Hope you get lucky in this week's draw. I had my name drawn last week. Your good luck wish must have worked. Sending it back to you 🙏👍🥰

I think those salt lamps are neat when you don’t need much light in an area and maybe will receive some health benefit from them.

Back in the day, if electricity not available., one had to make do with the kerosene lamp. Hard to believe when one looks around nowadays. We have so many conveniences compared to what my mother and grandmother had to help them around the home.

Thanks @gems.and.cookies and for the good luck wishes. 🤗 Right back at ya. ☘️

Terrific post and photos Jo!! That last line made me laugh..lol. I love the ship lanterns and I bet they would look pretty lit up. Himlayan Salt Lamps are great to have in the house. My son has one in his room and I have one but mine isn't hooked up yet. I have to get another plate to put under mine instead of using my everyday plates. I rarely burn candles inside anymore because the fumes are not good for the parrot. Perhaps some types would be okay but best not to take any chances. 😉💞

Thanks Dee. I’m happy to give you a chuckle 😆 I put a plate under my salt lamp as I heard they sometimes drip but I haven’t seen any drips and I have it on all night.

I feel the same about candles as one can’t be sure what’s in them to release toxics into the air. Candles are pretty to look at in fancy jars, etc.

Have a wonderful Thursday my friend. 💕

Most welcome Jo! My son has a plate under his but no salty sweating as of yet. Best to be safe than have to clean up a mess. We have some of the flickering tea light candles as well as some larger flicker candles. They work on a battery and don't look bad at all in a candle holder. I do love the fragrance regular candles though and have one in my bedroom. A lot of times I don't light it but take the lid off and you can still smell the fragrance. Wishing you a wonderful weekend! 💞

A lovely collection of lights and candles Jo, they all tell a story. I look at my special lights and memories flood in so quickly.
I use soy based candles for my meditations a lot to keep it clean. I hate the idea of breathing in toxic paraffin wax.
Hope all is well for you and you are staying warm.

Thanks Angie. We have been having a few cold days and suppose to be snowstorm this weekend but that’s January here.

Good you know your candles and don’t burn any toxic ones. They do set a tranquil mood.

Wishing you a wonderful Friday and weekend ahead. 💕

oh yes, the candles on the birthday cake ...! In our age, it is safer to put 2 candles in the shape of numbers on the cake, 🤭and then sometimes we can read the age backwards,😁 for example this year I was 25 years old 🤣

You are just a spring chicken, Barbara. 😊
