Music coming from the balconies!

IMG_20220806_185120.jpg

Last weekend I visited an exciting event, held in the city of Sombor. The town is lovely by itself, but imagine strolling through the main street, enjoying the architecture and at the same time listening to music. Oh, you could say that it is available everywhere and anytime if you have your earphones with you and a device to listen to music.

But what about live music? And coming from the balconies of those stylish buildings?
That is already another story!

IMG_20220806_181501.jpg

I have the impression that the city of Sombor cares about the culture and well-being of its citizens. It has a theatre, library, cinema, and many schools, churches, administrative and judicial authorities, hospitals, markets, music associations, orchestras and recently it got also a philharmonic. During the summer, different types of art-related events are held.

IMG_20220806_181842.jpg

My niece informed me about one of those events held on Saturday in the streets of this city. Maybe it was not my best day to visit such an event, but the not perfect things can be put away for an afternoon. We went, and I don't regret it. I regret just one thing, that I could not stay more time there. After all, this was called: The Evening of Street Musicians. but I stayed just during the afternoon.

IMG_20220806_182854.jpg

So, from the title of the event, you guess that it had to o something with music. On the main street, there were several stages for the musicians, but also the balconies of the old buildings had the role of small scenes. Let's go together there and see :)

IMG_20220806_182732.jpg

mipiano_banners_strip_gimp.png

The stages were in the preparation phase, the musicians were maybe playing hide and seek with us... or just at home. But the most probable case is that they were walking with the audience from balcony to balcony and enjoyed the music played by their colleagues. The performances in these mobile scenes took place later when I already had to go home. A pity, but at least I could fully enjoy all the mini-stages and those musicians who were playing for all of us.

IMG_20220806_182145.jpg

IMG_20220806_181614.jpg

The atmosphere was so nice. A summer afternoon started as a very warm one, but the refreshing breeze came as help. The musicians... I think they all loved what they were doing. This musician in the striped T-shirt played a few Italian songs on his mandoline. O Sole Mio could be heard on the main street, but he didn't sing. He used a small instrument, something like a whistle for the main melody. In the same manner, he played the song Bella Ciao.

IMG_20220806_191209.jpg

The girl from this balcony was singing songs accompanied by a guitarist. Well, don't ask me for the names of the songs, as I am bad at knowing the names of the new artists in the pop scene. I was familiar with those songs, I heard them somewhere, but indeed the names of the singers are not coming to my mind. The adaptations of this girl and guitarist were nice and they also received applause from the audience.

IMG_20220806_185142.jpg

In the next photo, you see just some windows and an empty balcony, but if you observe it better you will see two people. Two guitarists that played very well, it was excellent! There were speakers up there, so the sound was not a problem, it was just that they were sitting almost inside so the audience could not see them well. Thinking about it now, maybe the balcony was not so safe (if we see the condition of the facade...). It is an old building that maybe needs maintenance.

IMG_20220806_183206.jpg

So, moving from one building to the next one, we enjoyed in total 10 small performances from the same number of balconies. Around 30 musicians participated, counting those in the main stages too, that played later in the evening. As mentioned, I was attending just during the afternoon, but anyway it was a pleasure to be part of the audience for those local musicians.

IMG-20220808-WA0005.jpg

mipiano_banners_strip_gimp.png

Audience?

It is the time to see also that part of the event. From small children to older generations, all followed the musical route on the main street. There is plenty of space there so some also danced to the music. A nice Saturday afternoon for those who wanted to do something different, and attend music performances in this setup.

IMG_20220806_184159.jpg

Indeed, this is not a usual way of listening to a concert. Just two cities in Serbia at the moment organize the event The Evening of Street Musicians, Novi Sad and Sombor. It was the third year that it took place in Sombor. The people like it and I am sure the tradition will not stop, maybe even expand to other places.

IMG_20220806_184340.jpg

As there will be always an audience for those musicians playing on the balconies. Even if nobody could come, the statues that live on the main street will be there.

IMG_20220806_183031.jpg

Real statues, and maybe also those that just pretend to be a statue. Would you say it is a real person if it would not move for a while? I guess it is not easy, to be motionless and keep silent. Though they move when they want to thank you in case you left some tip in the basket in front of them.

IMG_20220806_191245.jpg

Not to forget to mention these two guys that were around us all the time. Cool stilt walkers that moved with the audience, from station to station, listening also to the music and having fun with the people. I was amazed by that skill as I see it difficult to maintain the balance, however, I know that everything can be learnt and practice is needed to acquire skills. I hope they also enjoyed that walk and didn't get too tired walking for several hours on those poles.

What about you?
Have you visited recently any street event that included music and other interesting details? Maybe a concert or a night out with friends accompanied by live music?
Good or even not-so-good experience related to a live event...? All counts :)
We will be glad to read your contribution on the topic in this small corner.

You do get to hear and see the most wonderful places, my friend!
I'm very jealous!! 😉

What's the story behind those umbrellas, then?
I saw them here only yesterday on @eugelys post:
https://peakd.com/hive-191635/@eugelys/efcbsyzz#@eugelys/re-anna-newkey-rgb437

I'm sure we all wish for some rain.. 😉

Oh really, umbrellas everywhere? To be honest, I don't know the story behind it, maybe I should search for that info what the colourful umbrellas represent :))

Thanks for the heads-up to Eugelys's post 😇

Incredible, isn't? Both your Spanish speaking countries full of them.. 😄
I wonder why? 🤔😄

You're welcome!! 😀

But this event didn't happen in Spain (I am still not back there, I am on holiday)
This city Sombor is located in Serbia :))

😄 Ah, that changes the back story every so slightly.. lol
Sorry, must have scanned over that bit too quickly.. 😏
Enjoy!!!

It's ok, who would know where that city is 😂

🤣😂🤣 Lesser known, but very beautiful! 😍

But what about live music? And coming from the balconies of those stylish buildings?

Oh... that must have been great!
These are completely different sensations, perceptions and emotions.

Very beautiful photos!
The buildings and balconies are just gorgeous!

You know it well too, listening to live music is a completely different experience 🎶
I still remember the description you made when you have listened for the first time to a classical music concert 😇

The style of these buildings is indeed lovely 😍

I still remember the description you made when you have listened for the first time to a classical music concert 😇

WOW!
It flatters me!

I still have this concert in my memory.
And I miss that moment...

How wonderful this must have been… such a great event. Wandering the streets and listening to the musicians playing in their balconies.
To bad you couldn’t stay longer 😊😎
Thank for sharing this with us @mipiano 😊
Happy Tuesday 😎

Guess what, we are moving out of our apartment now the contract ends end of the month. I just can’t take it any longer here, with the landlord not wanting to fix anything. It doesn’t help me get better either, been knocked down with the flu/ bad cold almost 2 weeks now.
We found a nice house… yes a house with garden we can rent for the next 10 months.
20 minutes from work instead of 1 hour 15… and we save 550 euros each month on rent, diesel and toll roads. So all pluses. It even has a fire place for the winter…
So now I have to pack up. We sure didn’t plan to move until our big move… but we have too. As health is so much more important. 🤓
I keep you informed 😎

Oh dear little girl, thank you for informing me, indeed. 🤗
I remember all the struggles and the landlord not being fair, who would not fix the air conditioner in such heat? Just incredible. I am happy for you that you found a house, and with a garden!! 💙 That is great, and all that you will save on rent, diesel and tolls, I am just happy for you.
I know, moving is not easy but when you finish it, you will feel relieved!

Oh, bad flu for two weeks? I am so sorry :/
We are also stuck here, we had to be back in Spain tomorrow but guess what? Husband also got a very very bad one, he is still not good, I followed him but with a much milder version, and have some inflamed cyst on my shoulder that is treated every single day but it is still not calming down after more than ten days of treatment and cleaning. So that is my rant hahaha, and my update.

The afternoon with the music from the balconies served to relax a bit :)

Thank you so much 😊🤗
Yes, it will be better there, and next month I will forget about all struggles here.
You know what I do now, while packing… I label everything and write down what is in each box. We won’t unpack in the house (as everything is there) just personal things we need the next months. So we are ready for our big move 🤞🏻 No updates on that one, so we guess still months away…
I can’t wait to sit in the garden 🌳🌴🥰
The new land lord seemed truly nice. She lives In Sevilla and comes down 2 months in the summer to escape the brutal heat there. She owned it for 24 years and every year she fixes up a part. She did the bathroom last month. So somebody that takes care of things. Makes my mind at ease a bit more moving to this house.

Oooo nooooo so sorry to hear you can’t return yet. 😔😬 being sick… first hubby and you. And a cyst for such a long time. Hope it calms down soon and both feel better to travel back.
I cross my fingers for you dear @mipiano 🤞🏻🤞🏻🍀🍀 that all will be better soon for all of us.

Glad it was a nice afternoon out with the music.
Take care and try to rest a bit… bigggg hugggg 🤗🤗
!LUV

Oh, I know, all those boxes, packing, unpacking and all. Well, good that you will not unpack everything until you get to the new, permanent home 🏠. Just the necessary things...

I wish you the best of luck with the new landlord, hopefully better than this current one. 🙂

And I wish you a lot of strength for the packing and labelling, that is a good idea to label everything well! Smart 🤓

Thanks, I hope soon - these days- I can start packing and hitting the road 🛣️ 🙏

Yep, always so much work… we have to many boxes 📦 hahaha 🤣 and I packed too many times hehehe 🤭 But once they are packed, it will be for a while. 😎
Thank you so much dear @mipiano
The labelling, counting etc. is needed as the “big” move will be continental 🤓😉 so everything needs to be specified.

I so hope it for you… that you can get back. When is school starting?
Fingers crossed 🤞🏻 🍀😊

It's because of the gigs I have and already missed out so many ones.
Can't find more substitution for them, but ok, learning to accept things and think that everything happens for some reason we don't maybe see.

Have fun packing the boxes :D

untitled.gif

That’s a shame… but like you say… everything happens for a reason.
I see it like that too, even our extra move.

Thanks so much @mipiano 😊🤗 get well soon… take care!
Good evening 👋🏻🥱😴😴

This seems like such an interesting event, the picture with the umbrellas look like something I have seen before, maybe on TikTok.

Never been to an event like this but it will definitely be entering my bucket lists.

I loved reading this, made me feel like I was experiencing it with the details you put

I think this umbrella thingy is pretty popular now, I saw it in another city too, bet there well a bit fewer of them.

Thank you for being the audience for those musicians with me :) I hope you can attend a similar event one day 😇🎶🎶

Hopefully I do soon :))

Yes, Sombor, Vojvodina, Serbia. I lived there for a while but many years ago (I'd rather not say when). A very cultural place, as you noted. I was at one concert of so-called "Starogradske - Old Town Songs", they are like chansons of a sort. Oh, and I saw the greatest son of Vojvodina, the late Djordje Balasevic, in a live concert there. He was great.
It reminds me of a Croatian town, Varaždin, which is also very cultural and the biggest center of classical music in Croatia.

Otherwise, of course, we're always moving around concerts, but you know, more garage, punk, or jazzy style. 😎

Wow, you lived in Sombor (or in Vojvodina?) Anyway, what a coincidence! Seems that the world is small :D

Starogradske, yes it sounds very familiar to me, and of course, Djordje Balasevic, a true Pannonian sailor. Once I participated as a member of the choir in one of his concerts (but also, many years ago, that I would not say when either 😂 )

Otherwise, of course, we're always moving around concerts, but you know, more garage, punk, or jazzy style. 😎

The style doesn't matter :) It is feeling what we get from live concerts!

I lived in Sombor for three months and in Novi Sad for two months. Been there to teach some people to set up the new production line and how to service the parts. Very nice people there, different than in central Serbia ... congrats, you participating in the Balasevic choir, he's true legend :)

Oh, great for Novi Sad too!
I lived there also, and that is where that concert with Balasevic happened. Actually, I went with his daughter to the same class in middle school :D But yeah, it was a long long time ago :D

So, looks like you have Balkan roots? Did you move before the war or because of?

I moved many years after the war. Well, just a bit more than a decade ago 🌞

Pa deset godina i nije tako puno 😎 !LUV

We used to have several street carnivals in Lagos when I was growing up, around festive period And it's always fun.
Music playing streets blocked and everyone happy.

But that doesn't happen much these days.

This is good.

Sounds interesting, but what a shame those events are not around anymore that frequently. However, in case you catch one of those events, we would gladly read about it :)

I ll be on the look out hehe,..
Its all now in my childhood memory.
I m hopeful for a possibility by Christmas

Fingers crossed then :)) 🤞

Wow
That truly looks awesome, I could almost hear the music through the pictures...it made me sad it was only almost!

Hahahaha, just almost 😂

But you have a good imagination, so I am sure the photos got some musical background in your mind :D

The ability to be in the right place at the right time.
Sombor resembles a large music box, and it's a shame that more "non-profit" events like this don't exist, but I suppose that's the cause.

Such manifestations are the best way to present a country's culture, we are much more than turbo folk. 😉

Of course that we are much more than that. Though cultural events like this have to fight a bit to get a place in the jungle of everything.
A good sign that people still can recognize what is bringing more value in long term :)

It was a historical event in a historical street. People's joy can be read on their faces. This must have been the spread of all arts, especially music, architecture and acting, on the faces of people.

Yeah, I also think the mixture of everything, not just the music made this afternoon that nice. 👌

Hi Mipiano,
I have visited a music festival but that was last September, yet it turns out epic. The organizer didn't control the number of tickets sold which ended up the venue too crowded.
But we have some placed here that set up food kiosk every weekend with live local brands performing. This is at night time.
I admire that lady pretending to be a statue! you are right it was so hard to just stand there motionless. Also she got a nice make up/custome.

Well, sometimes it happens that the organizers sell more tickets, so the place is packed. This one was held in the open air and no tickets of course. Just strolling around, as if you would do it any other day, but with a nice musical background :))

Oh, so you do have some live music around, and with food! Cool :))
Maybe you would like one day to describe those events if you happen to visit them 😇

Oh, the lady who pretends to be a statue for sure has to have a lot of patience. I can't imagine myself being under all that makeup. I think I would quit that job after one day 😂

That's exactly what happened😂. I even travelled for hours, book a transcient but turns out like I only spent a night in that place. No enjoyment at all.

Hehe, we have that open tickets during festivals here in our country.
Yeah, will be sharing about that next time😆.

Same here, just wearing her custome was already a struggle for me.
So I commend her.

Oh no, I am sorry for that bad experience. But, you can always try to find a good one which will make up the things :))

It looks pretty great there. I didn't visit any street art or performances so far this year but maybe we might see something when we go on holiday in a few weeks. Great photos! 😎

I wish you a lot of fun on your upcoming holidays :)

And also, hope that you can enjoy some art performances soon, at your place or on your trip. 🎶

Thank you! 🎶🎵🎵🎶

I am only left to imagine hearing the neighbourhood play music from their balcony. It would have been so beautiful. Now I am imagining 🎵🎶🎶

It was nice, you can trust me :)) 🎶🎶🎶
Thank you for joining me in this event @starstrings01 😇

How I wish we had the same event here in our place. We only see these kinds of performances in theaters, and sadly it's a bit expensive to buy a ticket. I commend Sombor for taking care and retaining their beautiful culture. I am sure the next generation will thank them ❤

The next generations indeed have to see and grow with culture. This area suffered a time of cultural degradation, but seems that not everything died :) There are still those who can appreciate the real values and cultural events 😇

this one new for me, also unique event. it's nice to see different culture from other and it's beautiful

I am glad you liked to see this event :)

Woww .. this is one very unique city and full of history. maybe if there is a culinary tour there it will be more complete. @mipiano 😁👍

Hehehe, no culinary things this time, although many times some tasty bits are offered too in these types of events 😎

Street music wow have not heard of such but with the look at the pictures I can tell the event is an interesting one. Thanks ma for sharing enjoy your day

For sure, it was interesting and I am glad you could join this event in this virtual way :)

How romantic could it be a town? Well, you pretty nailed it with this subject! I absolutely loved the way you write your post. I admit it, I've been follow your writing and travels, since a while, and everytime I say to myself "well, this has to be her best post.." and then, suddenly you post another one even better. I appreciate what you're doing, dearly. Musicians and a balcony. A very Woody Allen view of life itself.

Oh! I really love and appreciate how passion they have on music. I find street musician is very attractive. I also hope that you can spend more time there in your next visiting.

Aw how amazing! Music coming from the balconies would be such an awesome experience, especially on a summers evening! :) absolutely loved all of those buildings, they're magnificent :) happy you enjoyed yourself! :)

Music coming from the balconies adds colors to the soul. How I wish I could have a wonderful place like this. Life feels so good to be here. This place is so relaxing and its ambiance warmths my soul.

I read your article and it fascinated me, especially when I was reading, I imagined it was like going to a rich city.
