From Idea To The Realization...

How do you go about realizing an idea? Of course, if you already have the initial idea, that it is developing in your consciousness... but what about the next steps? How many phases do you have to go through from the first sparkle of the idea to the final product? I'm interested in that, how do you manage the realization and what are your tricks? Is there any magic or the reality is just: apply hard work and persistence?

My case, this morning: I had a piece of music in my mind that I wanted to play and record. I already practised it a little bit yesterday, however, it was not a real dedicated practising, more like reading a bit through the music text, playing it a few times between the lessons, and late in the evening studying it again for half an hour.
It was not enough. It was not any decent to be good for a recording, but in that moment I still had not realized that. Still thinking it will be ok, I moved the piano into the other room as there was more light. Then, the setting was prepared (connecting the audio interface with the laptop and the piano). The only thing that I had to do is what it is supposed I know to do: play the music and record. Here the troubles started. I played over and over again, always with random mistakes and some very annoying imperfections. I got distracted and in that seeking of good performance, desperation took the stage. I had to stop the process, get up from the setting and calm down the mind. That step took time I have not counted with, however that additional phase was inevitable. Finally, I changed the piece of music hahaha. So new composer, new piece and starting again the steps: practising and recording.

Actually, I practised this piece less than the other one I initially wanted to play, but clearly, today was not the day it had to be recorded. The other will come as well, one day when I repeat the studying session...with more dedication. Today, Minuetto with Variations is what is coming here. The composer is Giovanni Battista Martini (1706 – 1784), who was a Franciscan friar in Bologna, but as well a musician and composer. Seems that he was appreciated at his time, although not so famous nowadays. An interesting fact is that Leopold Mozart, the father of the young Wolfgang Amadeus consulted him about the talents and musical skills of his son.

So to repeat my question, what is your story? Do you sometimes change your plans when something is not coming out or you stick to the initial idea without flexibility?

Hola @mipiano

Hello @mipiano
What a situation, there are times that they become somewhat annoying. It has happened to me, that is, it happens to me very often with the guitar, there are days when I want to learn a scale and no matter how much I practice it does not come out and I would like to leave it but I rest for a moment, I relax and then I get what I want from the scale.

Good to know that I am not the only one who gets blocked while practising hehehe.
It is good you can continue after a rest with the same scale or song, it is good! Surely, with clear mind it is easier to achieve anything.

As you know also, playing an instrument requires concentration, having skills already, a quick reading ability, listening to how the sound is formed... It is everything a process, but what annoys me is the reality - that there are always some random mistakes. Mistakes that occur for ''no reason''.

I am trying to understand those random errors...why my fingers don't reach with perfection the key I have to. And the only solution how to wipe out them is more study, but not meaningless repeating. We have to practise our mind how to visualize in advance where and how the hand should go and to automate it. That could not happen today with the other piece I wanted to play, so I decided to change the music after the short rest :D

It was my additional step today, and that changed to the initial idea too, so the realization went a bit into another direction...

Thank you for your engagement in this post, I appreciate it @colorcareer 😇

sometimes the musician is flogged with the strict requests that are presented to him. It is something sometimes inconceivable, in fact there should not be oppression in music, although some good works have been brought to light thanks to these movements, but, music is expression in all its senses, and if one day I do not feel happy, but on the contrary I have an incessant desire to cry, or to scream, also to eat, haha why not. In conclusion, the technique only serves to make it easier for us to express ourselves, but it does not control the feeling itself.

What a nice observation. Music is a way of expression, indeed, and the technique is the tool how to make happen that expression. In fact, the greatest composers considered the technique as a part of that intellectual work... it can not be just drilling, it is an essential part of achieving the musical (or any other art) expression. Thanks for your engagement 👌

Do you sometimes change your plans when something is not coming out or you stick to the initial idea without flexibility?

Yes, I change the initial plan as I go along, if possible hehe

This piece sounds very beautiful ... It has that very peculiar sound of colonial European movies.

So you're changing your plans as well :D

Um,I think, it really depends on the situation, if the original idea can't be realized, then it's better to modify ... If you can cope with the realization with a little bit of more effort, maybe it is worthy to stick to the plan so it can be achieved.

When I prepare my students for a concert, I constantly tell them that if they make a mistake during the performance, they should not stop and correct themselves... it is better to continue without showing the mistakes, even though it sometimes means changing the music text which is not such a welcome action in classical music.
They should finish the performance with or without additional improvazation :)

The sound of this piece. It is a pre-classical style, so maybe this kind of music is used in some movies you mention to bring the atmosphere of those years from 18th century.

Thank you for listening to this music and your comment @elisonr13 😃

Well yes, you are right in what you say. It is more of an alternative, "changing"; respecting the established musical pattern is an important goal, actually. I would surely enjoy watching some of your classes. :)
