Landscape photography – An afternoon walk on a beach in Mauritius (23 photos)

DSC_01.JPG

While on vacation in Mauritius in November, my sister and brother-in-law came to visit us. Together with the two of them, we stayed a few days in Flic en Flac, a small town on the west coast of the island. The photos are from an afternoon walk along the this long stretch of beach that has made this small town a popular tourist spot. We started at the public beach in the north and then followed the coast some 4 kilometers to where Sands hotel is located, before we turned around and went the same way back.

Flic en Flac is one of the main tourist regions on the island. It's known for the gorgeous beaches, highend resorts and beautiful sunsets. The beach follows the coastline for 4 -5 kilometers. This stretch is lined with resorts like Hilton, La Piroque, Sugar Beach hotel etc. When walking along the beach, we passed all these. The beach is open and accesable to everyone, even we don't stay in one of the resorts.

We are not at the «end» but as far as we chose to walk. The Sands hotel is located here. If we had walked a little further, we would have arrived at the Tamarin bay where the village of Tamarin can be seen on the oposite side. The southern part of the island is mountainous, which actually gives so many hiking posibilities, if a break from the beach is needed.

The stunning mountain in the background is located on the Le Morne Peninsula in the south-west corner of the island. The mountain – Le Morne Brabant has cultural and historical significanse. An impressive mountain with a history that belongs to the darker side of Mauritian history. In 2008 it became a UNESCO World Heritage site and a symbol of freedom. It was here on this mountain that escaped slaves was hiding in caves. Slavery was abolished in 1835, but because they didn't know that, they thought that they were going to be arrested, when they saw soldiers approaching. From the top they jumped to their death. When I did the hike to the top two years ago, I felt as if I was walking in the footsteps of the slaves. It made a deep impression to stand on top.

On our way back to where we started, we made a stop outside some of the resorts. All of them have great locations, but there were only a few people on the sunbeds. We noticed that there were few tourists in general on the island. It was quiet up in the city, few people in the restaurants and few people on the beach. It is summer and high season, but we assumed that it is the pandemic that makes many people choose not to travel.

In between we took a look back at Le Morne. My sister did the hike to the top two days before we did this beach walk. When she looked at the mountain, she couldn't quite belive that she made it to the top. When looking at it from a distance it does seem as an impossible task to hike to the top. When you have done the hike and know the story, it will make an even deeper impression.

The sun almost disappears as we continued. By the time we reach the public beach and still had a kilometer to walk, it was almost dark.

Beautiful location, great photos. Thanks for sharing ☀️😊

Thank you :) it is one of my favorite beaches on the island.

You are welcome, I can imagine why… 😊

Wouldn't mind changing this winter time to some seaside time!

It was actually very nice to go out and only have to put on a pair of sandals...when back in Norway it was freezing and a lot more cloth is needed, just to go the shop...
